Yo LM, I figured if anyone could appreciate a "cooling" dilemma, it'd be you :D

I may have just solved my own (potential) cooling issue and wanted to get your thoughts (saw your write-up coincidentally...nice work)

At any rate, moving to a new space (9x12x8) and there is an overhead,6" round vent that runs almost directly through the middle of the new space, through the ceiling. It's probably 4' off of the main trunk of a 5 ton central air unit.My thought was to divert, or possibly even disconnect right above my space, add a 45 and pipe it into the room.

What say you ?

The room will have 3x600 digi's, 65pt. dehuey, 2x6" inlines (one cooling lights/w scrubber, the other recirculating w/scrubber) 2x16" oscillating wall units.

TIA

Hehe yep, I am certainly not a great grower, but I like to think I'm one of the better grow ROOM guys. Glad you liked the cooling article, I'm working on a solar writeup for growers too. ;)

I like your idea about the AC duct, in fact it's a great one! Grow rooms are always limited by the weakest link, and the ceiling is dictated by the strongest one.

In your case, the 60000 BTU AC is probably one of the strongest links there. That alone gives you the ability to cool 12-15KW in lighting alone! I would plan on filling the space if you have that kind of cooling, if it's a flower room only I would want to put in at least 6kw to 9KW in lights (or 10-12 X 600's) and pack the room to the corners with plants, seriously. If you have to have veg/moms/clones too then I'd still do lots of light, you'll get the best bang for the buck this way. You'd still only be using 2/3 of your AC's capacity, even if you didn't use air cooling.

You'll need to relocate the thermostat into the grow room though, but if you get a good programmable one set it up to keep day/night temps in sync with the rooms lighting. Nice to do 85*F during the day with CO2, and around 70* at night. Cheaper to run lights at night too, makes the AC compressor have to work less. If it gets cold outside, the low temp sensor on the condensor (outside part) might need to be relocated to inside the grow room to prevent it from turning off when it snows.

You doing a flat garden or a stadium? If I had 8' ceilings I'd do a barebulb stadium in a heartbeat now, probably a W shape with 4X600's in each valley. Add CO2 and get around 8-10# per crop, or stagger them for 4# monthly. Hehehe, that is, if you're a better grower than me!

BTW that made me think of Tom Hill's indoor grow, he got over 4# off a single 1kw light on an 8X8' sea of green. But out of 64 square feet, that's not an efficient use of space, even if it is on power. Packed with lighting, you could get double or triple the yield per crop out of the same space.

I've seen stadiums, and they are such a good use of space and lighting. Though genetics play a huge role in genetics, the right room will allow you to exploit its upper limits.

Sorry, stoned ramblings, smokin some of the new PMN (whew it's stony!) and watching Watchmen on TV. Fuck I love this movie, Dr. Manhattan OWNS.

Oh, it would be nice if you could redirect the AC return ducting to the grow room too, so it doesn't pressurize it and push out CO2 and smells.

Right on, Laze...appreciate the input, homie :joint:

I do plan on adding more lights :D

As far as the a/c, my initial thought was K.I.S.S., in that I'll be adding a T connector with a damper to regulate the temps at first, with only 1800, that should be a breeze, i'll play with it a bit.I have seen thermostatically controlled dampers, so there might be another option before flat out moving the thermostat (resi).

My other thought was the fact that the cooled air is also dehumidified(which I can also control, for the most part) as well, so that should help with the RH.

Yes, it's just a flower room, but I'm also toying with the idea of having a mom/clone/ling cab in there. A relatively large one at that...until I can make better use of the space with lighting anyway.

The cab would be passively cooled from the bottom with a 4" booster coming out of the top, venting into the flower chamber.Won't be much in the way of lighting in there, CFL's and Floros.

I will say this, from the looks of things at the moment, i'm looking for a very strong pull off of my front 600...at least a bow, but they were vegged for 8 weeks too, so...fingers crossed.

One stoned rambler to another...lol

I'm just a noob, maing :tiphat:

Oh shit, now that would be nice!

I'd have to do a seperate, closed loop for that though...:chin:

EDIT:

Looking forward to that solar write-up...:joint:

ALright, tomorrow the Grape Stompers move to flower, the old PMN pots get dumped and rinsed, the PMN and GS cuts get transplanted into the 2g Smartpots, the Jackpot moms get raped for clones, and the flowering Jackpots and Grandaddy Urkles are at 4 weeks flower.

Gonna be a busy night!

Oh and I gotta burn some trim, that's always a fun project for 2 AM in the sticks. There is a nice bag of trim I gotta process into ISO, guess I gotta stock up on more SLX and just evap it at the basement.

OK all done for the night! 5 people X 5 hours of work, and we did the big monthly plant swap:

Removed 49 pots of soil and added to compost pile
Rinsed the Smartpots out and dumped the water on the roses
Moved 50 grape stompers into flower (left 6 in veg, and brought 3 home to put outside)
Re-arranged veg room and re-potted a few big grape stompers into 4 gallon pots for future mothers
Took 90 clones off the two big Jackpot moms and put them back to veg.
Dumped two reservoirs and refilled with RO
Transplanted 91 clones into veg (combination of Grape Stompers, PMN, and some new purple strain from a buddy called WOW!) Haha, unknown genetics but supposed to be bomb.

I also got some liquid worm castings, mycorrhizae and H&G Roots excelurator for the clones. Added some of it to each res at 1ml per gallon, fuckin $70 for 250ml and already gone in one night. Good thing I bought two!

I turned off the valve at the barrel on the blumats, I want them to get nice and dry before they get any water. Don't have enough blumats in veg to run 91 plus moms anyway, so the veg is handwater for now.

Took a bunch of pics but I'm pooped, will upload tomorrow. The Jackpots and Double purples look nice! A bit of yellowing on them, so I added more grow nutes to each res. The new growth is dark green and the yellowing is slowing, so they should be ok.

Night all!

Good thing I went to check on things today! A breaker tripped, knocking out my cooling system. It was 99* but only for about 30 minutes, whew. I ran another fat extension cord and put the Sentinel on it's own 20A circuit, probably should have done so from the start. Hopefully no more issues!

Picture time, here are the new GS and PMN cuts, and 30 WOW in veg:

FLower room, the two big PMN moms at the head of a row of Jackpot, all are at 4 weeks flower:

And the Double purples, GDPXUrkle at 4 weeks:

The new GS cuts that just got moved to flower, little smaller than I like:

And a couple wide shots:

Happy Memorial Day weekend all, and to all you veterans, a BIG thank you!!

ALright went and picked up 10 teenaged Grape Apes and a couple PMN teens from a buddy (thanks bud, you know who you are!) They need some love but will survive. They're in coco but I'm gonna veg em outside for a few weeks to see what happens, oughta be fun!

My trim is all dry, time to make more ISO oil here shortly.

Also got a few of my old mag ballasts back, I'm gonna use the 1K MH ballast to hang a vert bare bulb and make a new mom room, will be 4-6 moms in a ring around it in my former drying room. I can't wait! :)

I am who I am coz I is who I is.
OMG man looking sweet cant wait to see those grape apes man, are you getting those blue dragons u were talkin bout way back.

Thanks buddy, yeah the second half of the room is lookin sweet!

Yep I've got three of the blue dragons, they're about 10" tall right now, gonna get em big so they can be moms. Gonna be another month or so before they are big enough for cuttings though, but I've got JP and GS moms in the meantime.

Anybody know Grape Ape lineage offhand? I can look it up, but I figured someone here might know.

did the breaker trip on the CHHC-1? or the breaker feeding the CHHC-1?

I had some issues with the breakers tripping on the units themselves and eventually ran everything off contactors to lighten the load.

Thanks guys, no the CHHC1 didn't trip, just the circuit that powered it, and the surge protector it was on reset as well, so it didn't come back on when power was restored.

Now it's direct to one of my dedicated 20A circuits, no surge protector so it shouldn't recur.

Calimed you've had Wow? Know the genetics on it?

Yeah, I came across a bit of Wow a month or so ago.
I tried to get the info on genetics, but was told it was a secret :(.

Thanks SSM! Yeah I like to just sit in there and stare, good stuff! :)

Thanks Calimed, I'll check with the guy I got them from and see if he knows anything.

Went and sprayed everyone with Floramite, Eagle20 and Liquid Light last night, lost a few of the GS clones but I've got plenty of spares. After the JP/DP side of the room comes down in 4 weeks I'm gonna replace them with 80 plants instead of 50, gonna swipe blumats from Veg and use them in flower.

Very nice.

Just wondering about your blumats... how many should you use for a 3 gallon pot, a 5 gallon etc..? Is there a rule? Do you use the long blumats or the shorter ones?

Thanks!
