BEST GUARD DOG?

^^^Take heed to the above post. Some people don't realize the consequences to ownership of some of these "bad ass dogs", this is why I stated when I started this thread that I wanted a dog to guard my property but not one that would bite my buddies or invited guests, uninvited another story. Also I don't want the shit sued out of me over an overly aggressive dog like the German Shepard I mentioned earlier that I had to get rid of for this reason, she was just to protective and it would have taken a lot of time/training to overcome. Also my homeowners insurance won't cover me or write my policy if I have certain breeds for this very reason. To be exact the Staffordshire Terrier(mentioned a lot here), Chow, Pit bull(mentioned a lot also), and an Airedale of all things. Rotties and German Shepard's aren't on the list, and I know first hand Shepard's will bite the shit out of you if you do anything funny or to fast around there masters. When I was a teenager a buddies female Shepard leaped across a large room and bit the crap out me just because I stood up to fast. I have nothing against any breed, but I don't want a junk yard dog. I need a dog which I am reasonably confident won't get me sued, but will still keep the bad guys away.:ying:

well a top shelf mastiff will run upwards of 2000.00-5000.00 so not exactly junkyard dogs. id say any mastiff is your best bet. for the most part they are gentle giants until the need arises.

Junkyard dog

By junkyard dog I meant a dog that's sole purpose was biting anyone who comes on his property or inside his fence except the owner. Again not a knock on any breed, each have they're place!

i would like to point out that these two dogs i was on about would never
touch humans and were around family children all the time they just dont
get on with other annimals much.
my current stafordshire bull terrier is annimal friendly and is scared of cats
he wont bark or be aggresive unless some one comes into the house at an unscheduled
time,he knows our routine and acts accordingly.
also another point my father wasnt the most loving person and never projected this on his dogs.
i love my dogs and show them it and they return it.
but i still say they arnt good gaurd dogs due to lack of barking, its a case of once you have wronged them they will let you know.

Don't knock breeds, knock the trainer.
You probably weren't Alpha.
With rare exceptions, most breeds respond to the training you give them, regardless of size.
A dog is trained 24hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
If you are not into that, then you might as well just get a dog...
Not a guard dog. A Schutzhund would be your best bet for a FAMILY guard dog, but it requires more time than you are probably willing for training.

That is just how I see it.
Try a Saint Bernard they don't need much training. They are big enough to scare away most people.
Or improved home security? There are more deterrents than just dogs.

If you are not into taking the time for a properly trained dog, try hardware and software security. You don't have to feed it, walk it, clean it.

bro as the owner its up to you to control ya dog....if you dont think you can handle a shepherd,i think you need to think again about a big breed dog (any).....get ya self 4/5 jack russells to protect ya property...

a gaurd dog is just that....something that will bites/defend family/property at ALL cost.....with the sounds of it your after a pet not a guard dog....no disraspect bro..it just any big dog can be a handfull & take time to train, (never mind guard)...it is up to you to train your dog

I had a Rottie for 10yrs never had an issue with training or otherwise, he was pretty big, like 135lbs. My Shepard was a wonderful dog with my wife and kids, and well trained, just overly protective. You can't train everything out of every dog now can you?

The Fila Brasileiro is a wonderful breed developed in Brazil, the loyalty of these dogs to their owners is impossible to describe. Fila means “to hold” in Portuguese.

Filas are great family dogs, amazingly gentle and loving with the family unit. However, they do not like strangers, because of this last characteristic, a Fila is not a dog for everyone.

Their main function is that of a guard & personal protection dog. They have very strong protective instincts, therefore need no training in order to perform the job for which they were created.

They are known for never challenging family members. These dogs are extremely caring & & submissive with their immediate family only! They do not accept strangers.

you really need 2 dogs. one little and one big. the little ones hear everything and alert the big ones.i once came home late and lost my keys ,i climbed through the window right over my sleeping 125 lb dog. that dont happen any more with a little dog too

also if you're new to dogs an older large dog rescued from a pound can be a great deterrent; they've mellowed out a lot by then but still look menacing to the point where others don't even want to find out if they're nice or not

sad thing is they will pass away quickly so prepare for attachment and loss; but that's life

Go to the pound and find you puppy you like...then raise it to behave as you want it to...
I know, here in Denver, you can always find a good dog at the pound...and, in return, it will get a loving home...

qft... go to the pound, adopt a dog that you like.

problem solved.

My south African mastiffs are bred to live in Africa. The yhave a short coat like a pit. They ward off AFRICAN animals and intruders.

Tell me that's not an intimidating dog...165lbs pure muscle, unlike a lot of other mastiff breeds which are heavier and not nearly as muscled

The mastiffs sound like an awesome guard dog, would a mastiff put up with a miniature poodle under foot?
