What's West Virginia like???

there is a more than likely chance that we'll be moving to northern West Virginia really soon for a good pipeline job....so good money and from what i can tell really low cost of living.

most of u know i mainly lived in colorado and alaska, and now live in texas (still goin back to AK eventually)...but this WV thing would be a good opportunity.

im not sayin' exactly where, but it would be in northern WV, and not too far from Wheeling.

i have 1 good friend from charleston who lives in portland now, and he told me that i'd really like it.

im just curious if anyone here is from there or spent much time around there, and what you thought or think of the area.

I worked there once. their license plates say "Wild n Wonderful" They aint shittin about the wild part.

Expect crooked hillbilly cops, people that ding your door on a daily basis, people drunk at the gas station at 8:00am "you can buy liquor at them"... This is where you go right before you move into a bus in the woods.

However the place looks nice, and you could defiantly get a nice piece of property and house on a pipeline salary! Seemed like W Virgina had just begun to pickup "commercially" about 3 years ago. If it has kept going I am sure you will find everything you need to live, might be tougher finding some friends, if you even want them lol...

its very beautiful.. the mountains arent really mountains.. but they have these amazing tight hills. up north in the panhandle you have development coming for years but it also means a decent standard of living for most everyone... down south. there is some absolutely crazy chunks of land that are split into these really cool valleys.

up north you have dc within a hour, and a great little river in harpers ferry well two..

in the middle you have a great lake to play at moutains to ski hike or snowboard and down south you have the capital

all of em have some good places to find a house or apt and call it home. its what you make of it.

As said above its a beautiful state plenty of outdoor opportunities, just watch out for the family inbreeding an you'll be alright.

I lived there in 1989-92. You'll probably need a 4 wheel drive vehicle in the wintertime....
it snows a LOT....plus WV really makes it hard registering a car...$$$; brought in from another state & getting a WV-DL....(at least it use to)...Good Luck.

WV is awesome, Morgantown is an awesome city and it's where West Virginia University is...lots of students and bars and what not...just right outside is everything you need if your outdoorsy...camping, awesome fly fishing!!!** and rock climbing...Then there is some really sweet towns that are really remote, cheap property too. Oh and All good festival pops off every July during the summer, and it is crazy!!!

just don't EVER piss off the good ol' boys. If they ain't working in the mines then their correctional officers for one of Maryland many prisons that are up in the panhandle area of the tri-state section, and they are some mean nasty MF's if rubbed the wrong way.

You know why they never solve any crimes in West Virginia? All the DNA is the same and noone has teeth.

I lived and farmed in Hampshire co for 8 years. Two state troopers and four sheriffs deputies in a huge county. Average one cop on duty at a time. Find a place on the south side of a mountain too steep for hunters to climb and grow. Don't expect your cell phone to work half the time. I used to drive 2 1/2 hours each way to work for decent money. Property is cheap food and gas is not. The people stick to basics and are easy going as long as you go with the flow. I loved it but had to move to be within an hour of doctors. You will find it a whole lot like Alaska with half the winters. Good luck
