That's awesome cloverman :) I keep meaning to play there since I'm supposed to have a hookup for free golf. Have you heard there's a hidden course out there, like trail links or something.... a golf magazine mentioned it like 6-7 years ago.

Have fun

When you start to break a hundred then you're 10 strokes away from bogey golf :D

Seriously though, when I stopped shooting 100+ and kept penciling 95's.... things tend to get more consistant in my swing etc but not a lot changed. Living by a golf course for putting practice helped but the only thing in the end... that gotr me in the 80's was

Course management.

I played an entire season subtracting a sandiron from the green and teeing off with what is left. So if I hit my 56 abou t110ish yards, I always want a full sand wedge as my approach. So I work backwards., Distance to green is 385 - 110 = 275 So that's driver wedge but it's tight, I drive 275 a good amount of time in good conditions but lets say drive 260. So I move that all to the 3 wood. so 385 - 220 = 165 or a 6 iron

So 3 wood
6 iron
2 putt

equals par

Easier for20+ handicap than

Driver- wedge or 9 then putt

Played a year like that. Local course I didn't use my driver much. Got my strokes down, re introduced the driver with a whole new understanding and have never looked back,.

While concentrating on course management, everything in my game improved.

GeorgeSmiley- thats a good lesson! More people should do things like this to improve there game. Course management is so important to know when to play a lay up of the tee! Once you start shooting under 100 it seems like the stokes start to fall of (putts, putts, putts) I use to take more strokes on the green then it took me to get there 3and 4 putts will kill you. I started doing putt drills and wow it helped so much if i have more than 27 putts a round im looking to practice for a while after the round to find the kink and get back the confidence and that is so important when you grab those clubs

great advice! im usually in the 91-94 range and have broken 90 only about a dozen times...im going to start implementing this on the next few rounds and hope to see some good results. so far the greatest improvement has been my tempo....not trying to crush the ball like i used to....and one of my achilles hill's is lifting my damn head to often....any drill advice for that?

Well, that's a balance issue and and "I'm in a hurry to see where the ball went" normally. The important things to do is to have your back straight, head down, but your chin high enough to let you make a good turn.
So if you're lifting your heel I would try practicing with your weight on your heels for a few shots and then weight forward on the balls of your feet as well.

Back and forth with a position/balance move will explain "feel wise" what you'r balance should not be.

Then it's a mental affirmation that I will watch the clubhead it the ball, I say this to my self before my second "waggle" and it helps me. "The arms hit things where the eye looks" Then for me I always say something about my backswing, "low and slow" so I remember to draw my backswing Like i have to knock over a pitcher of water just out of my arc on the ground behind me.

Just stuff I do

You guys ever play "play your favorite club" ?? You play an entire round with 1 club and a putter. I You need to learn to hit every shot there is with a 5 iron, long, short, low, high. Then your 9 iron or whatever.

I first read about this in highschool from Seve Ballastero's book about growing up on the beach in Spain with 1 golfclub and having to figure out how to hit all the diff shots with that one club.

Great practice tool Do you guys have a solid pre/post shot routine for every shot and putt? That brings a whole new level of consistency

My best advice is play gold not driving range. I hardly practive irons etc at the range. I warm up.

You're only on the Tee 18 times in a round but you're in fairway and aproach shots triple that..... where should the practice time concentrate on?

I put and ship and practice in the sandbox but that's it. At this stage I really only need to brush on irons etc, warm up then play real golf.

Brings up an interesting point. Since I'm actually a world class pool player. If I didn't give that up 10 years ago.... I would be on TV playing..... of course still be a bum like most pool players.

Pool and golf are similar in that, I never got great by practicing with my self. Just like golfcourse at the driving range. It just doesn't do it in my head. The one thing that made me great at pool and good at golf was playing, not practicing. On a course or a pooltable for 5000 you have no room for error. That's it. You'll lose and it'll hurt until you can't lose any more. Now the same thing is true without money involved. You don't have 100 balls in a bucket to zing all over the place.

You have 1 ball and you can only hit it 83 times (my number) Make it count, like the ballcages.... you gotta pick your ball up at 83.

Best advice, if you're an over 90 player quit trying to save the ball with miricle shots out o the trees. Most people I tell to lay it up, out of the trees then hit a good shot form a good lie and you'll shave strokes. You start seeing 8-10's on your card.

Man I love this game...... if there wasn't a storm warning I would get out there today. My course is 36holes but I run on and play the back 9 and you can cut back go hole 9-16, then cut back to 12 and do 12-16 again (funnest holes) and then finish.

Apart from that once in a while I venture out to Uk courses only once in a while.

I'm an American, however, over the years, I've played many courses throughout the UK. Personally, I actually prefer the golf in Ireland to the golf in Scotland. While admitting the Scots fathered the game, and recognizing that there are monuments of windswept history resting between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland also maintains an awful "class system" element that is totally absent from the Irish psyche.

I've found it far more enjoyable to play golf in Ireland. Hospitality abounds, and the warmth of the people always make me feel quite certain that no Irish-American in Celtic history has received better treatment than I. The Irish hospitality is a wonderful compliment to some of the absolute best courses in the world! Ballybunion, Royal Portrush's Dunluce Links, Lahinch, Portmarnock, and Old Head are just a few of many absolute gems throughout the North & South of Ireland.

If I could only play one more round of golf in my life, it would certainly be somewhere in Ireland.

It's nice to see some other golfers on here. When the weather is good, I play at least 4 times a week. It's been a long winter and I can't wait to get back on the course!

I can't stand golf on tv besides the highlights but I love to go. I think i need to dust off the old bag and get to the driving range as a treat when I finish putting some new soffit on the garage.
