Square pots VS. Round pots?

Rysam

Now I'm trying to grow buds in bud shaped pots now so I can have buddier shaped buds?
I think.

Im both joking and heavily medicated.
1:15 in the afternoon and I'm already posting stupid shit like this. Life is good.

I use 4 gallon square mayonnaise buckets I get from restaurants for free. I never had a square plant or bud.

lol.

ive used both square and round buckets. i dont notice any difference except the size of the pot. bigger pot = bigger plant.

the amount of dirt is the key. the roots will form to any shape. i would like to see pots that are smaller at top and larger bottoms. for final pots of course.

Volume aside I think it comes down to what you can find for a good price and grow style. My plants after a very short time are too wide to even worry about being able to put square pots closer together. I don't like to croud them so they are always a good bit apart. I could see in different style grows that being a determining factor.

I would use square pots if I were growing short single cola plants. Like rose buckets 1 per square foot. But 5 gallon round pots with bushes 1 per 3 square feet. In outdoor growing you can count in your roots and plants to be the same outside dynamiter. Thus the runoff from your leaves keep the new roots hydrated. Seems to me that roots in a square pot get bunched up in the corners. Just my thoughts.

Great ideas and info everybody. I think one thing that we can agree with is that more root space=bigger buds. Some great points were made regarding the square pots being more useful for closely packed plants, which is the way I have been growing for the past little while. But I want to start growing fewer, larger plants, which I could use either square or round because I'll give my plants enough room to where I won't need to pack them so close together. I love this forum. So many people willing to lend a helping hand with nothing in return but the satisfaction of knowing you helped someone grow some juicy buds. Thank you.

Watering my girls in flower I've noticed this FACT.
The 1 gallon square pots go dry faster than the 1 gallon round. As much as a day faster. I don't know why,but this IS happening to me. I'm done with the square thing,I was never good at even acting square. PEACE

Could it be because there are more roots and the plants are drying them out faster? Are there any size differences in the plants? Are all other conditions the same?

I'm not sure.....the plants are generally the same size. All the same strain, all on the same schedule, all in the same soil mix,all in the same space.
I'm thinking upon further thinking about it,that there may be a bit more space in the round gallons. They were sold to me as 1 gallon square pots,I never measured. It looks like they may hold a bit less soil. Not more than 2 cups less though.
Had a second thought that the heat can easier penetrate the square pot, perhaps causing faster water use????

Grab a measuring tape and check out the dimensions. It's easy to figure out volume.
Here's the data:
Square pots measure 5 1/2 across the top,4 1/4 across the bottom, and 6 inches tall.
Round pots measure 6 1/4 across the top,5 3/4 across the bottom,and 6 3/4 tall.
Also,They are filled approx. 3/4 of an inch from the top. It looks like(upon sitting them side by side) that the round one holds a bit more.

Taking into account the sloped edges and empty space at the top, your round containers are holding roughly 0.73 gallons and your square containers are holding roughly 0.65 gallons. (Wrong, corrected in my next post. Actually closer to 0.5 gallons.)

Well there it is. But does this account for the duration of an extra day of water use by the round one? It's not much of a diff. Thanx for the math.
