Sustainable Farm?

i feel yea he could maybe minimize risk by growing several varieties of wheat, like cc explained ther constantly trying to make better genetics. also am a true believer that disease and pest prefer to attack weak crops.
throwing in some companion plants, the use of cover crops, excellent soil and organic matter management and making great compost and ACT i believe will reduce that risk.

but yea another cash crop would fit nice

I'm more in favor of growing legumes than tilling in green manure crops and I agree that cutting and scattering is better than tilling in. The reason I did not include compost is that I doubted the capacity to produce enough volume for topdressing. I consider vermicompost to pack more 'punch' per cu. in. than compost and I (think I) know worms will readily devour the plant sludge remaining from the ethanol/methonal digesters. (and re-particle [sic] the rest energy potential) E=mc^2

I'm not really planning on expanding the challenge unless I want to create a publication.

Great thread!

Great thread!

Thanks for posting, MM. The weather has been beautiful here lately, so I've been trying to be outside as much as I can. Finally popped back in, and am stoked on this working model. I was just having a conversation with my girlfriend last night over dinner/drive home about producing as much agricultural inputs on site as possible. I have been stuck in this loop after a reply from 2nd in his Tomato thread:

To your point about no input:
How will you feed the microbes? And offer enough nutrients to plants for high level of photosynthesis under HID with Co2?

This thread helped me to formulate my thoughts, as 2nd's techiness had started me second guessing my beliefs (no offense, I mean it as a compliment). I suppose I worded it incorrectly in the other thread. It isn't "no input" that I am striving for, but for as much of it as possible to be produced on the farm.

I would love to scale this down to a small permacultural farm, which could be run by 6-12 people. The only problem I see would be growing less wheat, therefore generating less energy. This could easily be mitigated with a combination of solar/wind power. It would be glorious.:dance013:

Hey trich,

I too want to built my home on the basis of permaculture! And using aspects of Nature Farming and also what MM has been writing about.

P.S. I didn't take any offense, I like being a spark for minds :)

Make no mistake, wheat would likely be at the bottom of my growing list were I to set up a working model small farm.
