Is being pregnant considered a pre-existing condition w/ health insurance?

ok here is the scoop...my fiance is 8 weeks pregnant....we went to the hospital and found that out last weekend.

she doesn't have health insurance....and when we went to try to get medicaid they said that I make too much money.

we've been planning to get married anyway, just might have to be sooner than planned so that I can get her on my insurance.

I have really good health insurance w/ my company (blue cross/blue shield)...ive had it a cpl yrs now.

I'm wondering about a cpl things:

1) typically how soon after we get married will she have coverage?

2) typically would a group health insurance provider consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition? (i think some laws say that they cant, but im not sure)

she hasn't been to the OBGYN yet, just the hospital to be sure that she really was after she tested pos. on the home preg. tests.

she needs to get in to the obgyn, but we wanna be sure that by doing that it wont push it into the "pre-existing condition" catagory first. (....if thats even an issue)

I plan to call my HR/benefits dept. tomorrow, but would sleep better tonight if i knew what to expect.

I don't know about US healthcare coverage, but she can come to my house in Canada to have the baby. It's free...

You might be able to have it covered with your Plan...since it is your baby--
Best of luck bro--:tiphat:

Congrats Yukon:friends:Heres to a healthy baby.
I was in your same situation, 22 years ago.I had insurance similar to Blue Cross/Shield and they wouldn't pay for anything due to the "existing condition" Hopefully times have changed.

.....they wouldn't pay for anything due to the "existing condition".....

I actually laughed out loud when I read this because of how absurd it sounds. That is such BS, you are having a baby and they call it a "condition." Good luck yukon, hopefully you have better luck than shack did.

.....that didnt make any sense to me :dunno:

He's saying her coverage of the baby should qualify. Since your not married, there is technically no actual link yet. I would say it takes a couple weeks at most for insurance to be in effect. I remember being put back on my plan and it took only weeks to get onto my blueshield bluecross. They asked for a month for it to go in effect, I chose the end of June... if that helps any. It should be covered by yours if its under 18 or in school generally. Congratulations by the way! You could probably get insurance coverage from the min he or she is born if you get it worked out beforehand.

maybe check how long it is for common law so you can say you 2 have been together that long.

Congrats on the baby to be I hope all goes well.

I can tell you that if you were not purchasing your insurance through your company plan, you would most likely not be covered for maternity coverage - regardless of how posh your private plan. So, count your blessings for being part of a group plan.

again, i've said it before, congrats on the new lady and the new (tobe) kid.

secondly, if yall get married ASAP that will solve ALL issues regarding health insurance. go to city hall, get legal, and THEN go see the doctor.

if yall want a traditional wedding later (which, knowing you, you probably wouldnt) then you can do that on your own terms and have it more like a celebration of life, not just marriage.

hate to ramble, but if i were in your shoes, i'd just go down to the city hall and take the legal steps to make sure your future child has the best possible opportunities.

remember, this is less to do with you two then it is the new human youre bringing into the world. THEY are the most important, especialy since they are helpless and have no knowledge/instinct/etc. not only is it your job to instill proper values into them (whatever they may be in your case) but more importantly it IS YOUR JOB to give them the best possible opportunity to succeed in life, and hate to say it bro, but that starts at the VERY beginning.

then again, what do i know, i'm 23.

even if you disregard this entire post, again dude, CONFUCKINGGRADULATIONS not only on the lady who makes you happy but MORE IMPORTANTLY the child that you are going to bring into this world and teach/nourish/grow into a fantastic human being. Even this psuedo online relationship between us (which is minimal) tells/shows me that you will make an amazing father, and youre not one to jump to rash conclusions, so i'm assuming your gal is similarly oriented.

again, best of luck, but its up to you.

Anything that's going to cost them money right away is considered pre-existing lmao that's where the recently passed health care reform bills gonna come in handy for every american they can actually get some health treatment without being financially raped:comfort:

Big "C" to you too.

Medicaid is what you want to avoid at all costs. You want medicare. I've heard nightmares about what medicaid hasn't done for the sick and those in need.

Good luck with your new families...

never take 'No' for an answer bro, here's the easy out for the time being.......

evidently you've both told the authorities that the baby is yours, sounds tasteless but tell them now you're not so sure & will not tender the expenses of another mans child.

you guys need help and this country looks for any and every reason not to give it. I've been fighting the system: Workmans Comp, Social Security and Medicare for 5.5 yrs now to get my benefits for a well documented traumatic back injury.

go ahead and tell them you're not sure who the father is, her income will qualify her. there are women in Harlem that have as many kids as possible for the paycheck our govt hands out.

get your help now because raising rug rats is spendy today, next get a vasectomy (usually reversible) as a gallon of milk is $11.00 in rural Alaska:
You thought gas was expensive at more than four dollars a gallon, eh? Well try paying eleven dollars a gallon for milk and see how long you keep up that "no soda for kids" rule! That's the price people are paying in some parts of rural Alaska where the cost of living is extraordinarily high. And what about gas? Try more than nine dollars a gallon in some towns.

It also depends on where you live. In the village of Barrow where I live, a gallon of milk is $8...a loaf of bread is $4...and just a one bedroom is about $1500. Oh, and soda is about $10 for a 12 pack.

It is certainly expensive here for staple items, so most residents find creative ways of saving money on them (On Prince of Wales a gallon of milk is $6.00). One way is to always buy the "bulk" items in one of the grocery aisles. Another way is to buy bulk staples online...got a couple friends who are very into this...they buy organic vegetables, flour, even cheese from one company and it does end up saving them money (not to mention the veggie quality is way better) but they do make most food items from scratch...like bake a whole batch of bread on Saturday and eat on it all week. Healthier but definitely more time consuming. Of course when we visit off-island we stock up at WalMart and Costco!! Kitty litter, for example, is $20 bucks a pail here, and $11 in Ketchikan at WalMart.

But I'm guessing you know that already.......
