I think i screwed up my first attempt at "topping"

I have 4 clones that are about 7" tall right now in veg. And to keep them short and bushy til my flower tent is open in another 4 wks, i decided to top them. But what i did was just cut the top(including 2-3 nodes worth) on each plant. I just read right now that i was only supposed to cut the very top growth off. Did i screw up the potential of these plants? Are they not gonna have tops at all now. or will the now top nodes become strong tops? I'm wondering if i should just grow these out just long enough to take 4 more clones off of these or am i worrying too much.

Btw, i'm vegging them for my vert scrog tent, with a 400 and a 600 stacked. So, i really only need about 4' of height from them in the end.

as long as you let them veg back adequately you shouldnt have caused too much stress, i have done the same thing on a plant that was probably 18 to 24 inches took atleast 3 nodes off and the thing is a fucking bush, 4 tops with crowns...

yup if you have nodes left you should be ok, will probably just stunt things a bit..they dont call it a weed for nothing, very resilant plant

Oh yeah, still got 6 or 7 nodes left. And i'm not worried about them taking a lil longer, cause i still have plenty of time before i can even put them in the vert system. I'm vegging them under cfls to keep em kinda small, til i can put them in the vert setup and veg them another 2 wks or so before the flip.

I'm happy to hear u did the same and now have bushes, cause that's exactly what i want. I'm going from 6 down to only 4 plants around my screen in my 4x4 tent cause 6 is real crowded. So, if i can get em to be as wide as tall, it'd be perfect. Thanks guys.

you actually did the right thing - the plant recovers quicker if you top back to a mature leaf.

with clones you dont want to take more than 40-50% of the plant away to reduce the risk of shock. with seed plants they tend to get stunted or shocked if you leave less than 4-5 nodes.

oldblue,

Have you ever heard of the FIM technique? It is another way of topping without completely cuting the trunk or main stem.

Likewise, if you are trying to get multiple branches for more bud sites (SCROG & SOG) research what people call supercropping.

If you do experiment with the supercropping I would suggest trying to not over do it or go light the first time. I have killed branches by over squeezing and bending.

Good Luck

Actually, I usually do the FIM technique. The only reason i topped this time was some of my clones were a good couple of inches taller than the other two, and they're all in the same DWC tub right now vegging under cfls in the fridge cab. So, i wanted to make them all the same height for equal light distribution. It looks as if they're doing fine now. The top branches have growth almost an inch since yesterday. So, i don't think they were shocked too much. Btw, i only took off about 20% of them.

yeah u can butcher a weed plant with no ill effects other than making it take a bit longer to pick back up
