Do pets bring pests?

I have the opportunity to bring a cat home tomorrow.

The idea that kept me from bringing any animals in my house is I imagine the little cat going outside, rubbing himself on almost everything, chasing butterflies and shit, then returning home in my arms to share all the little insects (read spider mites) he caught in his legs and hairs.

What's your opinion?

My cat goes outside for an hour everyday. I love him more than anything, but he isn't allowed anywhere near my grow area. I have the same paranoia with bugs. Isolated and tucked away is the best way to grow.

Hehehehe, nice one. That's true, they leave a lot of hair behind them.

So you think it would be safe to bring one home? There's some vegetation near where I live, I mean it's not really a city with concrete everywhere. He could easily bring spider mites or thrips with him, right? Or am I crazy?

Yeah that's what I fear. Unfortunately spider mites can get on your clothes easily I think.
Not trying to make you worry, I'd love to have a cat.

My cats go in the room my tent is in but I don't let them inside my tent. They will stay outside sometimes for a few days at a time before coming home, they've brought home dead animals they've killed (including bats) and live ones to make us proud of them and help feed the family. I've never once had a pest except for fungus gnats. Just expect some cat hair to get stuck to your buds from your clothes, no big deal, pluck it off.

Cats and dogs alike either shed hair or bring all kinds of insects indoors. If you keep em away from the grow area then maybe its all right, after all its nice having a pet. I have a dog myself !

yes, they have pests, hair, and dander. keep them away from grow, dry, and cure. wash clothes and self before trimming and kepp everything away. nothing worse than smoking pet hair and skin.

Keep the cat inside. Cats don't have to go outside, I have several and they stay in. I simply vacuum and dust every day not hard to do.

Ok thanks everybody.

I think I won't take the cat for now as I already have a hard time tweaking my environment. Maybe later...

the cat wont bring in spider mites, as they want nothing to do with animals. if anything, its the hair only. filter your room, as you already should for dust. lots of people choose to keep pets around the rooms, free co2 producers! 1 cat will be fine. get frontline or advantix flea medication. you have a better chance getting spider mites from store bought soil then a cat!

if you can give the cat a good home that it otherwise may not get, you should do it man. hook a lil animal up! if it has a good home, then no worries.

if you don't use a clean suit or wash and change your clothes & shoes... what does it matter? the risk is the same. it's like the organic growers that smoke tobacco... why organics if the tobacco treated with who know what?

I hear you. It's just that I already have some problems with my plants and I didn't want to bring another risk factor in my house. But you guys convinced me about it.

The problem now is I'm away from home quite often, 4 days, 2-3 weeks sometimes and I'm not sure if it's a good idea to keep him.

another good thing about pets, it gives you a reason to have someone come over to look after them when you are gone, and while they do that they can look after your plants!
cats are wierd little guys, give it like1-2 weeks to settle down. if he still doesn't like you are is being a little bitch, then decide. i never liked cats until i got one 6 montts ago, there are some down sides, but he is cute and the purring is funny as hell and cute
