The camera surveillance system I mentioned in another security thread here really impressed me.

I was inside my house surfing the internet, 1st my cellphone beeps with a text sms stating that motion is detected on backyard PIR sensor, I run to my back door and see a 40+ year old piece of shit grabbing my bottles...... I holler at him and he takes off and jumps on my compost bin and over the fence....he got one bottle (btw, the bottles were not visible except from my neighbors yard, so he either randomly intruded my property or was in my neighbors un fenced property and saw the bottles,) **tip, dont leave shit like I did out in your yard, it invites pieces of shit into your property, i already knew this but was stupid and lazy, serves me right.

I didnt get pics of his face but I did get pics of him in my yard, I wouldnt have reported to the police anyways, but the value of my system shined through, it let me know that I have had visitors into a semi private sensitive area and should take extra steps to secure the area and be more aware that a 6 foot fence will not stop ppl from trespassing.

i hotwired an aquarium monitoring program to do that; a lot of webcam based software will do it as well... if you want to be on the cheap. i had it where if the door to my growroom opened i'd get a txt and it'd start recording anyone opening the door and sending those pics to a server on the net
