The Hydro Guy F*** Up thread!

H

headfortrinity

I went into a local shop for the first time and when the store owner asked if he could help I told him I was looking for a product that I read about (on ICmag). He then yells out to the other workers in the store "we've got a reader". I knew instantly this was a sales tactic to get me to buy what he wanted me to buy, they don't like me much because I'm poor and don't need their advice.
I've had good experiences with shops too though, I went to one in Sacramento and the guy was very cool. They have a different business ran up front and the hydro stuff s in the back, the owner was surprised I even found him because the company is so low key. That's my kind of shop, and all his advice was coming from the mountains he would say "this is how the guys on the mountains do it" I ended up with a 5 gallon ebb/flow bucket system for my previous tree projects.
You just have to find the right place.

Hydro Guy: "Can I help you?"
Me: "No, thanks" :joint:

Me too, the only help I'll accept is showing me where the product I request is. I don't mind talking to them for a bit to see if they know anything useful (that I can later confirm online) but I don't let them talk me out of a purchase I've already researched.

wow dude, it's amazing how people take advantage of someone when they don't have high amounts of experience....

I hate people like that; I see it so much at Best Buy when some one comes in there and is not tech savy. If I see that crap going on and the guy is spouting off bullshit I say sir or ma'm you really don't need this or that......

I made a DWC set up, got super excited. I got a 250w light, a resevoir for 2 plants. they were my first two successful clones. I was super happy when I started seeing roots coming out. Then when the roots go to the water, the plants started getting over watered because the water temp was too high. Then I gave up because it was really just room temperature.

you make me want to talk people out of what sales reps talk people into at best buy.

I had a friend who worked in sales for computers. I knew more about computers than he did and he was still able to sell computers to people that don't even need one.

It's all about business these days man, it's the sad truth. No one cares about saving their customers money any more. :comfort:

hi stitch, thanx fer all you do for us here on ic! theres only one hydro shop withing thirty miles of here and the guy is questionable at best.
when i was lookin for a medium for my newly born clones he pushed me in the direction of sunshine 4 mix. he said it was absolutely re-useable and then proceeded to sell me silica blast with all these other nutes! he told me to use the blast at every watering and feeding and it would be fine......well,i got a lockout so bad and could not reverse it so i lost nearly the whole grow, end result,2 oz from seven plants that were veged for four months! when i talked to him about re-using the mix he told me you cant! wtf! also,i saw two guys sitting in the lot across from him with binoculars looking at his store and when i told him he just said not to worry that it was nothing!!!! i think the guy is a cop or an informant! now im tryin to find a way to buy shit that can be sent to me but have no idea as where to turn. any help?

Very good advice

Very good advice

I wish more ppl would turn to organic solutions when it comes to bugs. Ceyann pepper works well at the flowering stage and remove the mother leaves. peace out Headband707:smokeit:

wow, nothing to worry about...... now that is bullshit. No one looks at a shop with binoculars unless they are stalking it!

In most states where there is no med laws seems that the people working there are more ignorant than ever.

Don't get me wrong, there are ignorant hydro guys in med states; but there is an over abundance of them in other places!

My hydro isn't all that bad. Yes, he's sold me some crap I really didn't need in the past (or at least tried to), and yes, he's kind of a know-it-all that knows-it-not. But they've been very helpful every time I've gone in, and for a small store they have a pretty decent selection, esp considering they get taxed on inventory every year (he once told me he keeps a lot of stuff in his garage to avoid paying the taxes on it lol). AFAIK they've never tried to upsell me on anything when I didn't need to be upsold.

There's only one other hydro store in my area, and that guy is famous. He literally worked with the Feds to start a grower off, telling the guy he'd sell the bud for him once he harvested. A few weeks later, the guy gets raided, and the hydro guy receives a few thousand dollar check. From guess who. Um, never shopping there lol

Well I will tell you one weird story kinda pissed everyone here off. The DEA from the US set up shop here in BC Canada about 4 or 5 years ago as far as everyone knows might be before that who really knows. ANyways they put they office right accross the street from the Compassion club why do you think that is lol peace out Headband707

icmag is a way more reputable source of information than the hydro guy.

overall I would agree...but having been on web forums of all sorts for a decade, there is a definite population of bandwagon posters and blatant, flat-out bullshitters who have fake personas on the internet. There are plenty of both here on icmag, so it's a question of picking out the ones who really know what they're talking about, just like at the hydro store :dunno:

As far as Hydro stores they are like any other business and yes expensive and they are told to push products that are not selling and in some cases the ppl themselves don't grow at all so they no nothing of what you are saying. Important to ask the person a couple of questions like what is his level of knowledge etc. There is always or should always be someone who knows the ropes. There is a shelf life on nutes and the sales ppl are asked to push these products and do. Important you do your own research and know whats what or you will get taken and nurseries have cheaper product in many cases and molasses is a good trick. peace out Headband707

i have 2 "grow shops" in the city near me. one is part of a chain and the sales people focus on everyone who walks in like car salesmen eyeball their next victim. then they proceed to try to "upgrade" you to a usually more expensive product and try to sell you as many "add-ons" as possible. i suspect they are commission paid somehow. i have yet to encounter anyone there with any real horticultural experience. i have heard some incredibly bad advice being given there.

the second place is locally owned and quite successful with about 8-9 employees. most of them are really there just to help you find what you are looking for and ring stuff up. they don't have a lot of knowledge and don't pretend to. but they have this one old dude there that they will get if a difficult question comes up. he's the one always taking care of the active hydro displays where they are growing tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and bunch of other stuff. all in perfect condition.

it's my kind of place. nice and relaxed. everybody's real cool.

but i still use a car with tags corresponding to a name and address other than my own and i always pay cash.

damn dman, that's crazy right there!

I ordered from hydro shops plenty of times, I ordered from one called alternative garden supply. They were very helpful; I was trying to get a clone product and I wanted to stay away from powders, because I guess me and powders don't mix, because I never got one powder clone to root! I only used liquid/gel based clone gel/liquid.

So he did give me some good asistance and I knew what he was talking about so that was cool; but few days later when I called them a different guy answered the phone and this guy was kinda freaky, he asked to many questions that made me feel un-easy......

What kind of plants are you cloning and so forth; I was asking him some questions about a pH meter and it's accuracy and about the new probe you could get with it and he did not know jack shit and kept coming back to asking me what I was growing..... I told him lots of things and got back on the story and he kept changing the subject and I yelled at him and told him look I am talking about a meter that I am going to use to grow many different kinds of food plants alright!

The guy was trying to sell me some other shit and tried to get me to buy a PPM meter and I told him I don't use hydro and I know you can use it even growing soil, using it to determine how much ppms in your water before you give it to your plant...

He tried to tell me ppm/ec meters can work with organics and I told the guy he was so full of shit and hung up on him.
