There is bound to be more hit's and tackles in Rugby because the actual working time of the game is several times longer (so harder) than what you call American Football......and they don't bang helmets on each other but their own heads quite often.......check out the state of most Rugby full-backs heads/ears they look like mixed martial artists......towards the end of a game....
Im well aware of the toll a rugby game takes on a body. Played for 4 years, went on two tours, one to new zealand.
My point was that you cant really compare the two as far as fitness goes, each requires a different type of fitness. When i was conditioning for football I was stronger, more explosive, and could sprint faster.
When I made the switch to rugby, i became more of an anaerobic athlete. I could sprint at 80% for longer than as a football player, and jog at 50% for much longer. BUT i couldnt run flat out as fast and couldnt generate as much explosive force.
and comparing the collisions in the two sports is like comparing a crash in a demolition derby to head on collision n the highway. two different animals.
both sports need a well trained athlete, but in two different fitness categories.
