IMO, genetic engineering will be a leap in evolution. Possibly further separating the have vs have nots in society and cementing a perfect class of human beings.

That is the end game of progressive philosophical thought is it not? Other humans can perfect the human condition? Maybe so, but it will come at the expense of genetic discrimination and a host of other problems.

Nanotechnology, Genetics, and the emergence of Epigenetics will introduce a whole new lexicon and set of philosophical questions IMO.

I guess it begs the question, what does the perfect human look like and who is going to decide these tings in the future?

Really??
I thought the official Government position was that god created the earth in 7 days, and that we are, have been, and always will be the same as we are now.

Add in a dash of nano-tech and the party will really blow up.

i really thought this was an Onion article until I saw the Wired magazine link.

you honestly think Wired magazine got a quality leak from a highly classified DARPA project? maybe some misinfo to scare the Chinese into a genetics arms race......
but if this project is real it sounds like some scientists figured out a way to extract more funding from their military handlers by building a bridge to nowhere.

yeah well another "official" position is that we are all "equal" lol

all this kind of shit is for mass consumption and most peeps swallow it whole - no chewing required.

It's the military industrial complex. It's an institution that is organic in it's consumption of resources. It's a federal bureaucracy and they are experts at building bridges to nowhere. The bigger Federal Government gets the more bridges to nowhere you'll see, including in the military.

thats what i was think'n....next will come arnie kicking your door down yelling catch phrases like "Hasta la vista, baby" blasting off a shot gun...HH. =]-~

So ask yourself... in the big garden. Am I a "keeper"?

The other line that no one commented on is ... gene therapy extended a lab rats life by 20%

So do you think that would be covered by insurance?

I think this is based on the theory that aging is a side effect of evolution and can be overcome. After the reproduction process is complete the older generation's purpose is complete and would be competing with the younger generation for resources. So aging has evolved into species to promote more rapid genetic change.

Dont have to be a dick because you dont understand something.

There is a really good article about it in the August/September 2008 Scientific American I was reading about and it talks about after you reproduce your genes are already passed on. All hereditary traits are already passed on at that point. So any traits passed on could only possibly help the offspring reach mating age.

example a 19 year old guy has a baby. then another at 22. at 32 he dies of heart failure because of a defect. His kids live on. Evolution can not select for longevity and aging is a side effect.

In the article they talk about breading experiments with bacteria and fruit flies. There are experiments where fruit flies are breed to live something like 10 times or more as long as normal by only letting the oldest reproduce.

The Darpa experiments sound to be along the same lines as these.

Through he human genome project they have identified. The "aging gene" if you will. The gene stops working when you are about 95 or so.

If/when they can figure out how to turn it off earlier, well, isn't the prospect of immortality or at least largely increased life expectancy going to be a pickle.

There are AMAZING benefits to this kind or research, but they will have massive implications for human society.

Some positive, some negative. The future can only determine if these discoveries have a net positive or negative effect for us. And even then that determination will largely depend on your own personal perspective formed through your own life experiences.

That pretty much sums up how I think about it? I better make damn sure I'm "a keeper."

And that all really comes down to is money and influence. Money buys security. As uneasy and shallow as that sounds, it's just the reality life IMO.

I know this probably sounds picky but I think its power that matters not money. Money is only as good as the power it buys you.
