How many of you have actually went through the effort of writing a senator, representative of your state?

I go to NORML to check current stauses of whats going on in different states and they make it very easy to write your state officials. Even though i only resid in one state i make sure to write a letter to each state with current propostions.

I know i'm not the only one and i hope more people would step up and actually try and contact their state officials.

I've even had one which i won't mention say he was bringing up the matter during the next meeting!
If your one of those people who says that your voice doesn't count or what difference will my answer make, you will be surprised. many of the people don't make the effort, they sit and listen to the media and decide to let that work for them, while everyone else who knows how it works, is spinning the cog.

If you have some extra time check out this site, it makes voicing your opinion much easier.

I'm sorry if this sounds like advertisement or if it has been said before, but i really wish people would get out there and write to these authorities to show them there's more than just a handful, but an actual nation.

I did actually write a letter to President Richard Nixon in 1971 to protest my forced induction into the US armed forces, specifically the US Army.

His office wrote me back thanking me for my thoughts and comments and later I got a very nice Christmas from Dick and his drunk ol' lady, i.e. Pat Nixon.

Wasted effort, IMHO

My state's websites are so pathetic that I could not find my reps. So I sent an email to every congressman in Colorado. I received 3 replies. Mostly from republicans. Go figure.

Actually they were all republicans. And two of them sent very nice, thoughtful replies. I would post them here... but reposting emails is a major no no without approval of the writer.

I don't because I grow. Not worth even the sliver of a chance that I end up a target because I wrote to some douchebag politician about cannabis reform.

What kinds of things do you guys say?

I'm interested in writing a letter (I live relatively close to our nation's capitol, so I actually plan on the in-person meeting kind of thing), but I want to have a gameplan and make it as effective as I can.

Any help on this front would go a long way for all of us helping, because I promise that, if I can find a good resource of key points, I'll do my best to get in congress' face about this.

if someone would write something out professionally and have a lot of good points and meaning, then I'd copy it and send some letters in.

thanks

thats why i posted the website. if you check out the website and click on one of the issues it has pre written text for each different issue! I think its a great source to start for any questions. Not only that but if its hard to contact your state officials they have the contact addresses for everyone in your state! you just have to navigate around on their site but i think its worth it.

Also you could always just fill in false information if your too scared about writing a letter, in which voicing your opinion is not an illegal offense as long as you don't bring matters up which shouldn't. I think NORML does a great job of making this accesibl to pretty much anyone even by writing the messages. Even if a senator or govenor see's the same letter they should recognize the continous effort on the same proposals.

I'm sorry, it's late :)

What I meant was in the context of personal interviews. I plan on going to DC soon enough, but I'd need a game plan for that. Not on a single issue necessarily (because I dunno when I'll be going), but more on marijuana as a whole. Does NORML do coaching or anything?

its good to see that there are some of us atleast trying. I will admit in the begiining i was one of those poepe who didn't think it would work, but it surprised me the first time i recieved a letter back! i hope state really considers MMJ, I would have no problem making it to the meetings leading up to such an event just to show that there are some of us displaced all over the nation.

I did it for the first time today in conjunction with comments about a bill further imposing the police state on us. To me it is this simple, how can any rational individual look at the dea's definition of a sched 1 narcotic and think that it applies to mj (and many other's) any more than alcohol or tobacco. Seriously, isn't this something that these geniuses at the supreme court should be able to figure out in their sleep?

Here it is:

(A) The drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse.
(B) The drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States.
(C) There is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision."

i completley agree with you. i asked some random people how they feel about MMJ and legalization and their main defense is driving under the influece. However when i bring up that alcohols legal and causes the majority of intoxicated mishaps. Most of the people who come up with the nonsense are more uneducated people on the topic looking for an easy excuse. Its sad that out of all the people who visited this thread about a 1/2 have actually tried while the other 1/2 really just don't seem to care which way it goes....how sad...

Isn't the number of high-related accidents ridiculously low? Like, 3% or less?

Edit: 3% of all DUIs is what I meant (intoxicated accidents, 3% were marijuana)

It is sad, considering that it only takes 5 min on the NORML website and you don't even have to write anything.

Didn't norml have those gov't charts that are like:

1 email = 100 constituents' opinion
1 written letter = 500 constituents' opinion

etc?

So technically... a lot more people have written than not in here :D

I wrote and left my real name too lol.. I have had more then enough of this herb being treated like a dangerous drug. While alcohol gets sold by our Gov. and they make a pretty penny off of that and so many ppl go down from that substance. Not to mention the fact that both our Governments grow and sell pot ffs. what hypocrits. They have it all wrong and ppl seem to have no say in how this really should be run. Bud has killed no one and it's time that we get the right ppl behind this. peace out Headband707

Thanks Bud! I just want people to know we can mak a difference, you just have to try! it takes too long to sit idly by and do nothing just to wait for a change.

I'm extremely happy to see where this thread has gone. I check it every other day, because my other posts fall off. I'm happy to see other people are as interested as i am also.

really just wish people understood the possibilities that we can achieve as a community nd that the bigger our group, the stronger the voice. I mean isn't that what ICmags about?

I'd like to personally thank everyone who has contributed to this thread whether you've acted out or not. I really hope that if we open peoples mind's to what's available, they won't think their quite so useless!

Just remember your opinion isn't useless unless you never voice it. right now there are concetrated areas of where MMJ is accepted such as the west and Northeast. Theres still regions where we have nothing in our favor and need to show that we don't oppose it. I live in the south and this conservatism really puts a hold on the plans, so until other states in my region start doing something, were pretty stuck. just like the Civil War once one state goes more will follow.
