If 220 is setup, is a ballast needed?

If I run multiple 1000's with sufficient amps off of 220, do I need ballast? I have a knowledgable electician at my disposal.

You have a knowledgeable electrician and you're asking strangers?

You need ballasts. You may be able to use one with two lamps in a flip-flop setup but, you need a ballast and possibly more than one depending.

would yoou start with a 1K when you haz no clue?

I wouldnt

Agreed, let alone several of them!

Start with one at most and learn how to grow indoors, if you start a large op with no experience you will not make your investment back for a year. Your crops will SUCK!

Last I checked..... HID lamps were DC and 240V from the wall is AC.

I can be, and have been, wrong about this. :D

And you are again lol.HID lamps run on AC not direct current using 120V 240V 277V 308V 480V.I tink I missed one

Hmmm... thought the arc was DC but you're right... that's not an AC/DC :headbange converter... Bad hair day. :D

Yep you're thinking of car amplifiers, which actually convert DC voltage to AC current to drive speakers, and look much like a digital ballast.

Let it be said that Hydro knows his stuff, he just had a cerebral hiccup. Who among us hasn't?

As the bulb warms up and gets brighter, the current across the arc increases. Suppose you had 1000w standard metal halides (ones with the bimetallic strip). Once the arc gets going current flow across the arc will increase and the bulb will just get brighter and throw more heat. Without a ballast the lamp will draw enough current to trip the breaker or explode.

The transformer give the right voltage for the lamp (probably not 220V for a 1000w bulb). The capacitor limits the current.
