Native American Reservations?

I hope someone can give me the straight dope about this.

I've always thought it might be a good idea to grow on an Indian Reservation. Or even just ask someone if you could grow a few plants in his yard and give them a couple ounces at harvest. Why can't you just go on reservation land and smoke a joint and give the finger to the pigs who are on the other side. I've always felt a huge source of revenue for Native Americans could be pot shops or little smoke cafes like in Amsterdam. They'd be HUGELY profitable. Or do the federal laws prohibit this and therefore give them (and us) the high hard one there too.

they ARE technically "sovereign nations" that pass their own rules, but they still have to petition the feds for permission to build casinos etc. i dunno...

Depends on whether you mean in the USA or in Canada. And even then, it is also highly situational and depends on the text of the actual treaty that was signed (if one was).

My expectation is that most of the reserves have easier and far less contentious means of making money on the grey side of the ledger. Tabacco and Alcohol smuggling and tax avoidance has been vastly more profitable for the Mohawk Nation then marijuana ever could be, with essentially no risk and no political will to bust those responsible, given the massive powderkeg such arrests would touch off.

Now - LEGALIZE and TAX marijuana? Then the reservation can make a quick buck by avoiding those excise taxes too :)

Sovereign nation or not, The FBI and DEA handle major crimes on the reservations. They have jurisdiction. Tribal police handle the minor stuff. State and County police are constantly busting folks on reservations. Growing on a reservation is a bad idea.

I'm surrounded by four reservations and I grew up on or near the Navajo Nation my entire life. Drug busts are common.

this is a bad idea, unless your tribe/reservation allow such uses for tribal reasons, and only if you are part of that tribe. Some reservations where I live have claimed that it is used in part of their tribal culture.

Wow. All seeing. All knowing. You couldn't possibly know that, for one. Also basing a conjecture like that on one tribe and expressing your personal opinion is totally meaningless. Please don't try so hard to show everybody how smart you think you are and just use facts (and correct spelling) if your gonna make blanket statements like that. And anyway, I totally disagree. But of course, then again, that's just you're opinion. Thanks.

Lol. There was a mj bust at a reserve not too far from me a while back. Genny set up, 20 buried 40' containers I think. Number may be slightly off, but it was all over the news.
Also, local PD has pigs at the reserves, but they are usually native.

Sheesh, can we stop effin with the Natives already... that was so early last century.

You are projecting your moral outrage into a completely unrelated question which is, are there fewer negative consequences for growing marijuana on an Indian reservation than off of one.

I think it was answered before you jumped on the soap box.

Indians sit on their porch and burn joints and do bong rips all the time. They rarely set it aside if the popo cruises by. I've never seen or heard of a cop pulling into the driveway and hassling them about it. Be a white guy sitting in your car out on the res and the Indian Police will definitely pull over to see if you have pot. Cause they look for people who might think they've found a quiet place in the country to fire one up.
I'm sure there are some grows on the res, but I wouldn't want to be a white guy trying to grow on the res and get caught by the bloods or crips. Extreme violence is the rule, rather than the exception, not safe for non natives to be messing around there. Well on the reses around here anyway. Unless you got a good friend there.

But there is no legal way that I know about to grow.

You're dreaming. Reservervation = FEDS = more trouble. The MMJ fight will be won and lost on the reservations. Don't even try to fight unless you have a buttload of cash on hand.

i have been to one small res in cal,the police don't come untill night.the people there were nice but guarded they thought I was a narc as I didn't do pills just herb, had a nice chat with an individual about the res in his home.most people were very liberal about mj,walking around with bongs, pot drying in the carport.met one person who claimed he could smoke a half pound in a month.I guess if you know somone and just want to do business, still kinda sketchy as wouldn't want problems if they arose.
at this particular res they are given a stipend evey 3 months hardly enough to afford a quality lifestyle, the reservations that have populations nearby are at a monetary advantage over each and every reservation.the 4 big ones cabazon ,san manuel, morenga ,and one other correct me if i am wrong.
the rest of the reservations in cal are poor and without the money, hence I can see the reasons for growing.

Already alot of this going on. In Montana close to the Big Horn there is a res that is known for producing pounds of ganja and with the local law enforcement following along with no way to stop it. These cats drive planes and have million dollar crops like its nothing. The DEA agent in charge of the area is the brother in law of the main guy doin it on the res. A friend of mine wanted to be the Sheriff in Billings and was told straight up by the tribal elders he would have gotten the job if he hadnt run on a platform of rangling in the drugs and dealers in the area.
