In the US, it is illegal for LEO to use FLIR as basis for a warrant. LEO must have enough evidence to get the warrant FIRST; otherwise, it is fruit from the poisoned tree.

Venting into the attic space over the kitchen or into to the laundry room dryer exhaust vent, or under the house is a good way. Or, make sure on the other side of the wall you have heat sources - refrigerators, freezers, etc. which are on continuously.

Before you are in danger of being popped by FLIR, LEO must obviously have some other type of evidence/info against you.

Don't be brazen, but don't hide quaking in fear, either.

I had some flying around the house. Almost on top of it. I walked down the street and a car had driven through a house at the end of the block. The best camera angle just happened to be over my house.

I would not sweat it at all. By the way, the air above your house is not private property.

good thread man we get a chopper at least 2times in the day and at night at least 3times and i aint joking fucking thing wakes me up gets on me tits but my mate dont live to far and he has the same prob but hes using very thick kingspan insulation a room with in a room and 4yrs on no probs i bet its a bit diffrent in the usa im talking in the uk not sure on the insulation types in usa keep it low warrant the cops can do wot the fuck they like if they see a glow from the chopper thats it your cards are marked and there gona come knocking in time dont ever take a chance.

Just watching this off my sky+ and am still positive they can't see through roofs or even windows. There's no need for any of this hysteria at all. The bits where it looks like bulbs under the roof is heat escaping from holes (tiles have straight edges and they're around the length of one of our bulbs, hea escaping from underneath one that has been dislodged by wind can look like a bulb on FLIR imagaes if you use your imagination) or they have an uninsulated roofs and have bulbs literally right behind the tiles which is surely a fire hazard anyway. If you're not completely stupid there's still nothing to worry about same as before this program was shown. Load of bollocks. If this stuff really gets to you maybe growing isn't for you, the paranoia doesn't stop so you need to be able to deal with it with common sense, sublimation and taking all precautions available..

No, i think the guys here are right, you can not see bulbs, you see heat on the surfaces, they even say it in the program that they look at surfaces for heat, if they were looking through surfaces that would be a serious intrusion of privacy, not that they give a fuck.

Supercondctor, im not sure if your referring to me, but im pretty chill with all this, im just interested in what they can/can't see, at the end of the day im not gonna kill my plant so theres no need to stress over whether i should stop, but still reason to be cautious, for obvious reasons, i wanna keep on growing, so should take precautions...

At first when i saw that program it looked like you can see bulbs, as if they're seeing through the roof, which would be very concerning, but their using heat sensors, not xray, so all good

I just wonder how thin can a surface be before they can see a bulb on the other side?
Lets say you put a 400w bulb in a plastic growtent, outdoors in the open air, the walls of the tent will be cool, so does that mean they cant see the hot bulb just cause a sheet of plastic is covering it?

As long as your most outside surface is not hot then in theory with FLIR, they can't possibly see through it

The HPS cab is exhausted into the same room out the back of the cabinet and then the window in the room just cracked to let heat escape.

The entire interiors of BOTH cabinets are lined in Reflectix thermal insulation as well as the wall that the cabs sit against.

What risk level is this person at??

< 10% chance of getting busted is my opinion. I think people with more power and less 'protection' have the same % though if they are smart about what/how they operate.

Look up radiant barriers, like mylar or tekfoil that block IR transmission and radiant heat. You can wrap your hoods, ducts, and walls with this so heat transgfer to outside surfaces is minimized.

I have had choppers hanging literally 50 feet away from my window, shining spotlights in my 5th floor loft. Luckily spotlights can see less than FLIR or i'da been busted right then.

Basically, just don't be stupid. Don't put high wattage bulbs in an uninsulated attic. Use mylar as a protective enclosure (good also for lightproofing). Vent hot air either into the home or from a logical location (kitchen stove vent, clothes dryer vent).

If you're growing in Big Kahuna or cabinetry, there's practically no chance of being seen on FLIR.

But, if you have 10 lights using 1,000 kw each, located in an empty garage or uninsulated attic, or venting heat from your bedroom, you CAN be picked up on FLIR. However, unless they have additional info on you already, it is not enough to get a legal warrant for your premises.

I'm in a bit of a sketchy locale with a lot of air traffic let me tell you every time a chopper comes near my house (and they do, a couple times a night *eek*) I have another little heart attack. Even at 2000w total spread across a couple spaces nothing near exterior walls I still get skerred every time I hear a low flying chopper at 5am chasing down some of the less pleasant element around here. I use my lamps to heat my house though vent them inside and run everything in room within a room configurations with air cooled hoods exhausting where my HVAC would...all winter...didn't turn on my heat once save for an electric space heater or two when we had a cold snap saved a few bucks with that one and I sleep a little better knowing it is distributed and not a point source blowing out the windows...that just seems ridiculously common sense to me though I think it's kind of insane to vent anything outside...what if you had breakthrough on your carbon filter, do you want to find out when you're walking home and the smell of diesel is wafting down the block...worst thing here is my bedroom starts to smell a lil delicious lol
