Thought I'd come back and say thanks yet again to jjscorpio. It's so easy and never fails!
Cloning with JJScorpio

I only put about a cup of water into the bottom of the tray. When the plugs start drying out and getting a lighter brown I'll use an eyedropper and put about a teaspoon full of water into the plug.
It's great to see so many people having good success......
I have a trainwreck x plant that I grew from a feminized seed (brought over from a recent trip to Holland). It's about 9.5 weeks old now, but I topped it around 6 weeks so it's nice and bushy (thank god for IC Mag!). I've got it under 600 HPS for 18/6 about 12 inches from the light. I have rr plugs, rooting compound and a humidity dome ready.
A couple questions:
I'm wondering if 9.5 weeks is too early in the life cycle to take cuttings?
I was thinking I could keep the clones in the same room with the mother, but on the floor of the room (about 6 feet from the light) while they're trying to root... or is that too much light?

Thank you, JJ, I appreciate the guide and the response... the results are in: out of 50 cuts in the rapid rooters, 49 took root, in just over 2 weeks- that's 98%. The things ROCK!

As soon the preflowers start showing (usually around 8 weeks, if I remember correctly? It's been a while), that's when your mom is sexually mature. Also, you want to wait for those preflowers anyway so you're not cloning males. After that, clone away!
What kind of light are you planning to keep them 6 feet away from? If it's a HID, that might be a bit much (HPS or MH), but I defer on this one because I've never personally tried it.

Thank you! This is my first grow (big surprise there!) and I THINK I see preflowers (little spikey thingies). I bought these seeds when I was last in Amsterdam and they're supposed to be feminized, but I suppose there's no real guarantee. I guess I'll find out for sure when I change it's light cycle in a couple of weeks.
Anyhoo, I took 7 cuttings on Dec. 18th. They're under a humidity dome in the grow room under a 600 HPS light (on the floor, about 6 feet away from the light) on the same light cycle as the host plant (18/6). They look happy and healthy, but no roots just yet.
Keep your fingers crossed for me. I can use all the luck I can get at this point!
You can take a cutting as soon as there's something to take a cutting from.
If you wanted you could top a two week old plant and clone the top, but this wouldn't make much sense. You should be able to cut a couple dozen clones or more off a 9 week old topped plant......

Make sure to take the cover off for a few minutes everyday. Also, don't soak the plug, keep them warm and keep the light as it is and you'll have a pile of rooted clones in another week..... Just be patient....

Hey I made a cutting off my plant just the other day. The cutting wasn't that long though. Maybe 2 inches and I only dipped about 1 inch into the rooting hormone then stick it in the dirt. You think it will work?

good tt jjscorpio, im having the worst time ever cloning though.idk what my deal is.all my cuttings die. they dont dry out they turn to mush the part of there stems under the medium rots or somthing.ive took cuttings twice after the first one i cleaned every thing up. the first cuttings were done in jiffy pelets.now i hate peatmoss.the next set was done in perlite not all have died yet but they are looking like death.ive done other plants in strait tap water i may have to go back to what i know works. any ideals for me? oh,yea i tried the one inch standing water method to i sucked at it as well.

I was wondering about this. Seems like some strains have just one main cola and the side branches don't hardly grow until flowering so do some strains not lend themselves easily to cloning because of this? TIA

EIght days in (trying to follow your method to the letter, JJ) and I have lost a couple of little tiny ones, probably too much heat because the stem just started to disintegrate....But the big ones have leaves that are turning over, and they are getting ever so just a little bit yellow. I tried to leave the lid off the cloner one day for an hour but the little gals just got all wilty with that. My temps get a little cooler at night, (68-74) and ccan get as high as 80 during the day.
Patience is the hardest thing to learn. Probably harder to teach.
What do you think....another several days?

I've been experimenting with the Rapid Rooter system lately with good results but I'm not getting roots any faster than with my perlite system. The thing I really like about RR is the small footprint. I can clone in half or less the space which is important to me as my space is quite limited. Thanks again, JJ and all the other posters for creating such a helpful thread.

whenever i have bad success / slow to root clones.. Its usually from keeping the rapid rooters to moist. Or keeping the humidity inside the dome high for too long...
Once the clones have been chillin for a little while, i try to let them harden off. And Usually try to have just enough moisture amounts for the rapid rooters. Its better to have them a little moist, instead of wet.
Sometimes if you let the rapid rooters start to dry out, it seems like the roots will start popping as they search for moisture
