Chronic, that's really about the best answer I come up with. THC seems fantastically inefficient in any of the other proposed roles. I'm a biologist and intuitively the UV-screen, insecticide, animal repellent ideas are all awkward.
I really wonder if it's here just for us, as unscientific as that sounds. Clearly the plant has gone to extraordinary lengths to produce the Trichomes, which seem exclusively present to produce THC and related Cannabinoids.
The THC molecules (to me) seem very useless in any capacity other than to bind to a specific receptor in our nervous system.
