Foam board insulation for the basement ceiling?

I was trying to think how to keep grow room noise going through the ceiling into the main living area.

#1. Would it work to install foam board insulation panels perpendicular to the joists?

#2. If so, then is the foam board going to have problems with mold/mildew? I was thinking just the foam insul boards then panda film in the growroom.

If not/ what is recommended for sound between 16 on center 2x10's?

Worried about moisture and sound.

Thanx

I don't want yer cooties. Plan to be able to remove the panels easily so that you can chack and do maintenance between grow cycles.

by noise you mean fans? and air conditioner?
I used foam board on the walls the thin one that they sell at lowe's or homedepot no mold problem.

Thanks for checkin in. Good advice, Probably the only way to know is to inspect it over several grows.

How thin?

I'm with Dr Dank, define noise. Muffler DIY by Kovenant works GREAT.

Yeah on the noise, really it's just ocillating fans and then an 8inch blower. Was planning on using 8 inch insulated ducting. The room is 11w x 8d x 8H. I would like to contain the noise to the growroom. The ceiling is all I need to think about. The room has 2 concrete walls and 2 studed walls which will be insulated.

Above the growroom is 2x10 joists bottom of upper floor is 104" above. The room above is an unused bedroom that no one really goes into. But the room next to that and across from that I'm not so sure. People are used to putting their coats on the bed and using the powder room across.

:dunno:

*IDEAL*insulate between the joist with the thickest insulation you can afford(10in think will be VERY pricey.......then sound board(sold at HD & lowes) brown cardboard/mdf 4x8 sheets, then drywall.

*Cheaper* would be insulate between the joist with 3.5in, then insulation board over

I ALWAYS insulate if its a living area above....if not the sound will echo in that empty space

When you say insulate to 10 or 3.5 are you talking about insulation batting?

good old regular insulation rolls......they come in different thickness which correlates to the R-value(or insulating properties)3.5in up to 12in or so....just make sure to get 16 on center(they also make 24 on center)

Okay, I found pro acoustic panels from a supplier and it looks like a $1 a sq.ft. A bale of R19 batts is like $40 and insul panels are 13 for 4x8. I could afford one or the other. Do I even need to cover the ceiling with panda?

do you have home depot where your at?....insulation prices are way cheaper than what you said.....r13(3.5in) roll of 40sqftt is like $9.....insulation is the priority if you dont want the sound....then just drywall or panda film

Those were prices from HD's site after I put in my zip code..... The acoustic panel I could only find at specialty places. brands like knauf and corning 703

What about facing on the bats and a vapor barrier?

This is all making me regret having my house be the meeting spot for my entire family on the holidays and summer...... :D

Yea definitly use insulation. If u can afford it put up hat rack (drywall furring channel) and hang ur drywall from that. They use hat rack alot in the construction of high-rise resorts to help sound proof rooms.

Yeah I'm going to head down there tomorrow. I have to get everything for the subpanel and framing.

I wish I had the money to do it all at once with all the dream materials.... but in a couple months it should ease up a bit. :)

Shit just thought of something, the joists have cross braces in the center of the span.... I guess I would just butt up to each side of them?

And what about the facing on the insulation? Foil/kraft/or none?

Thanks again for all the help.

the rolls will come with paper facing....that should be toward the grow room

the bracing isnt a big deal.....just go right over them

make sure you got a staple gun, staples, long sleeves, gloves, glasses, & a mask....then take a cold shower after(warm opens your pores & lets the fiberglassin to get stuck & itchy)

That's why I wanted to use rigid poly instead of fiberglass :D :D :D

I wasn't planning on insulating the 2 concrete walls... just tack up panda to the studs what do ya think of that?

You want a product called roxul fire and sound insulation. Its almost 2x more efficient at noise reduction and fire proof. Cover with 1/2 dry wall and your all set.
