i have a thermostat question; can a use a hard wired/ line-voltage "cooling" thermostat to control my exhaust fan? i found a single pole one for $15 new at my hardware store. the voltage and the amperages are the same for both. thanks for any help you can give.

Hard wired..white red/blue green orange?

most if not all go to furnace transformer..24 vac.

110 wired into transformer=24 volts unless its a static thermostat for wall heater. then 750 millivolt.

red/white =heat call..bluegreen/orange for ac=call..green alone controls stage for blower sometimes.

axilfan= 12 volts..need step transformer..24/12 volt...depends on fan..ive seen 24 volt ones..and 110 volt ones.

most are 12 tho.dc current.

i dont think it matters
yeah, actually it does.
if you were talking higher power exhaust fans there are some, like elicents for example, that really don't like standard speed controllers.
for your axial fan it really doesn't matter.
i would go even cheaper than 15 bucks.
you can probably pick up a corded lamp dimmer (extension cord with dimmer attachment inline) for 5 bucks including tax, strip one end and wire your axial to it. worked great for me all the way up to the larger muffin fans.

Yes, you can. A line voltage thermostat is just an on/off switch.

Cut the hot wire on your cord and connect the two ends to the appropriate terminals on the thermostat. You might need an intermediary wire to accomplish that, but that's the basic connection scheme. If you have to add a wire, just make sure it's at least the same size as your power cord because your current will be passing through that wire. You can connect the wire to your power cord with wire nuts, although you should make those connections inside a permanently mounted box with proper wire connectors and such. :smokeit:
