Heat issues in closet grow!!

I need some serious advice, I have been growing under cfl's for a while and have recently bought a 200 watt metal halide. The thing is that it just seems too frickin hot in the closet, I am running a fan but it's gotta be pushin like 80 or 90 degrees in there, what should I do? Is the heat normal? Am I just trippin?

You need to extract the heat not just blow it around. Consider a cool tube or heat shielded reflector. Attached to a proper inline or squirrel cage with ducting, the ducting delivers the hot air: into the attic, out a widow, through the roof, ANYWHERE but your closet or room the closet is in.

What kind of door does the closet have?

You can go to hobby lobby and get a hurricane lamp, it's a glass tube like piece with a curved shape and fits well over a HID bulb. Then you need to rig it to fit over your bulb without touching it. Then, on the end of the tube connect some ducting and attach that to a fan or blower and you're all set. I use a 400W hps and found the little fan was no good so I upgraded to a stanley blower, but for your 200w a fan should probably be ok. And don't use duct tape...that shit will melt off.

don't worry that was from my first grow, my garden is bigger now :)

Not knocking your design at all bro, I saw another guy with a similar set-up who had some air-flow issues with his hurricane shade.

He recommended this one:

@ 5.99 a piece, I'm thinking of picking up a few for future design experiments.

It's opened on both ends

You mean no doors at all?

.... add .....

D'oh, you're asking about the tube. Yes the tube is open at both ends. Drawing air through it and out the cab prevents a great deal of it's heat from getting into the grow.

Lighting in one end, duct work on the other. He had a 400w HPS in the tube.

I forget which thread I was reading that I saw it in, it I come across it I'll link it up for you.

Basically, it looked as if he had made his own tube light, very cool and relatively ez.

I'm sure FreezerBoy would know more about it then I.

ok but how the hell do you keep it off of the bulb itself?

Is the hood/reflector on your new lamp vented ?

Like this...

If not, you may have to use your imagination and/or the search function.....

The gentleman who I referenced in an earlier post (who made his own tube light) had vent hose attached to both ends, he had the light suspended inside the tube.

I'm sure you can figure it out if you try hard enough

Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

I tried

Like all of the other posts, you have to exhaust the heat buildup. These guys have great posts on homemade equipment, a bit beyond my limited initial expertise so i purchased a vented lamp reflector, like shown by Igro in post 10. Make sure the reflector has a glass lid which locks in the heat in the reflector, hook up the inline can or squirrel fan to the reflector and duct work to the fan exhausting OUTSIDE of the grow chamber. You should be able to drop the temp by up to 10 degrees with this set up. Also, for best operation, you have to provide an inlet for air to be drawn into the chamber as the hot air is exhausted, otherwise you can damage or burn up the exhaust fan. Best of luck.
Peace

Yeah, I am making all my own equipment etc etc. I am getting it cooled down with just a small fan for now but I just realized that I got this little holmes hepa filter with a fairly powerful blower motor in it. I am probably going to figure out how to do something with that. I have been using it to dry mushrooms with, until now!

look closely at the bulb and socket, I got a strap and a little 90 degree metal piece from lowes. For the ducting, if you can find a straight tube like posted before, attaching the ducting would be easier, just use another metal strap...I couldn't find a straight tube so working with the curved one was a little tricky. I got some metal "tape" with holes spaced down the center of the roll in the plumbing section at walmart, don't remember what it's called exactly but its very flexible. The hood I have has some screws holding the reflector to a bracket that's used to hang the light. I undid the screws and made a loop of the metal plumber tape and attached it to the reflector which is able to hold up the other end of the tube that connects to the ducting. To connect the ducting I exposed about a foot of the wire inside the ducting and wrap that around the end of the tube such that the opening of the ducting is pretty flush with the tube.

hope I'm making sense...

and I have no problems with air flow with the hurricane lamp, a straight tube would probably be better but no problems here, always around 80F in my closet.

Just buy a cooltube, it comes with a built-in reflector and one for the outside too!
It's really worth the money.

Until I can put one of those togethor would I be better off just going without any reflector. I see some closet/micro grows with the light just hanging in the middle of the room. Is that a good idea?

Assuming horizontal positioning, lamps throw 75% of their light away from the grow. The more it bounces and the farther it travels before being bounced back, the more you lose. You'll want a reflector.

Vertical lighting makes use of the 360º dispersal of light, no reflector is used. Lamp is placed inside a circle of plants.

See if your bulb is Horizontal, Vertical or Universal (both). They'll "work" in the wrong direction but, at the expense of lamp life.

It has a U on the bulb so I am assuming it is universal. Is this a good way to grow? I have seen some impressive rooms done like this.
