The LED stuff is, of course, very interesting as well. I'm lurking for whatever it is you're growing Pedro :lurk:

I know the purpose of the jack is to lift the aero buckets, but are you going to be going with a sog grow to where you will need multiple jacks? or will you need just one jack?
 
I just wanted to stop by and say congrats, and wow! What an amazing grow show you put on here Pedro! The setup looks amazing, and the buds look even better! Great job!

It is pretty small(13,5cm x 16cm). I found it at my lab equipment store. I'm making an alu frame (porsa system)for all three buckets, the "lift" will be in the middle. In each corner of the platform I'll mount a 10cm vertical tube, with wire running from top to bottom, through the tubes, for extra stability.

And thank you for the heads up on the UV-C light filter!!!:dance013: Just one question(or the first at least:whistling:) Do you know if the filter lets microorganisms live or dó they get killed off too??
Do you leave it on all the time of in intervals??

Hey mate - thanks :).

This time I gave them 20 seconds after lights out (I did it every night to see if it would do any damage - the greenhouse test was 4-6 times a week).
It kills all bacteria and fungi, but it has low penetration and shouldn't be able to mess with your organics, and should only be nessesary on leafs and buds. Short amount of time wont be enough to enter the plant cells, but the spread of fungi stops :)
Watch your eyes and skin mate, it's not to be confused with uv-a&b, it messes up the DNA in the cells in enters and should be handled with caution.
Wouldn't recommend to use the aquarium uv-c's on hydro water either - organic or not - it does strange things to the micronutes.

OK i gotcha its to raise all of them at the same time. I dont know if you will be interested in it or not, its a lil pricey, but Im going to use a DryLin verticle linear guide system. Like i said its a lil pricey but the "cool factor" on it is pretty high, and it might make raiseing and lowering your light a lil easier than useing the jack for the plants. Just another option I thought you might like to look at. Cant wait to see your nextgrow up and going!!
 
Im going to use just one of them for my build(havent got that far yet). You can have them made to any length to fit your application. The one that I will be ordering will be just over 12" long and a $100 bucks and some change. I will have to fabricate a mounting plate for my light to make it work also.

I'm still have a few thoughts about the lamp build, perhaps mixing in a few LED's. I get a lot of news from the front line of LED field testing, and I would like to make use of what I've learned about plant reactions to peaks in 715nm light. It has been proved plants minimize their stretch if they get a big peak in the middle of the light period, and have an amount as low as possible the last hour. The other way round works to if you want them to stretch a bit. I would like a few watts of 715's on a timer to be in more control of it. :)

And then there is some quite revolutionary news from the studies in light and flowering.
They done a test at Waageningen university with chrysanthemum, a SDP normally flowering at 11 hours of daylight. In this test they gave it 4 additional hours of narrow blue light outside the 11 hours of mixed light, and achieved a plant that continued to grow while flowering. To everyones surprise it also stretched a bit, not the expected behavior toward blue. Funny stuff, could be fun to try on a plant, though it would be in one of the other cabs. Won't waste a whole grow on an experiment.
I'll learn a bit more about it next Thursday. ;)

Specific wavelengths on separate timers or relays influencing plant response would be cool. :) Yep, some interesting research in the FIR and Phytochrome response areas, good for either creating or inhibiting stretching, and influencing flowering too:

Saw another thread online where someone wants to take monochromatic LED spots covering the entire spectrum, and subject multiple test grows to them for each nm range during the dark period to determine if they interrupt flowering. Then, take the results from that and create a 'Dark Period LED' light to be used only during nighttime which helps photosynthesis, and a regular light during the day. Many colors outside of blue and red still work on plant pigments and receptors, albeit on a reduced level.

Maybe we can increase yield and reduce flowering time, down to an AF strain run 20/4 time-wise - who knows? Interesting stuff!

I think I'll hold on to the platform idea to save some money, but I'm looking forward to you get yours! :)
The platform thing is pretty easy to operate to, and the wire just glides inside the tubes as a guide system. It will become a "turn of a button" lift and somewhat cheaper.
 
Ya not too many people would want to spend that much on a manual light mover, figured i would throw that idea out there incase you would.

What I'm hoping for, if the blue light experiment should work on cannabis, would be to force the plant into creating new nodes while flowering. I could imagine bigger buds if you could get it to do that the first few weeks after it started flowering.

Sounds cool with an experiment. Most studies in general light uptake is done on the plant "Arabidopsis thaliana", it is the banana fly of plants with all 26000 genes mapped. That enables them the explain the light reactions.
News from the international symposium on light in Japan last year, was all about LED and experiments in plants light uptake. A lot of trials in all colors on a lot of specific species, but no specific tests done on canna:dunno:.. :D
The first professional lamp from Fionia is supposed to land this year. It's not a system you can buy for your own home, but the science behind it is phenomenal.
The lamp they got running at the test setups measures the wavelengths of the natural light inflow in a greenhouse and makes sure the light conditions(along with new curtins blocking fR for use in the evening) are optimal for your chosen growth at all times. At my work, we have to use hps at full power for 18 hours a day(We use more power than 600 homes this time of year), since the winter light would make them stretchy. With these lamps we would only get the colors needed and make full use of the outside light. Big money save.

The lamp is water cooled, and co-designed by a company dealing with heating systems. The heat from the lamp is stored in huge water reservoirs, along with excess heat collected in the summer, and through a heat exchange it can be used to heat the greenhouses in wintertimes.

They are doing a test on a system that will do a realtime measurement of IR and chlorophyll reflection, and autotune both spectrum and output to the rate of photosyntheses.

This kind of strain specific B/R testing would be a thing of the past! :)

The hunt for LED's and good drivers has started. I've decided to be patient, and use all the time it takes to turn one of the cabs into a LED grow with no cfl's mixed in. Thats the only way I would be able to do the circadian rhythm based spectrum change anyway. I would like to build a programmable dimmer box, working like the "sunriser" for aquarium lamps, for each color..

So, back to plan A with 6x55w triton bulbs for next grow :) Just a small re-build to fit the cooled base.

Haha that's so futuristic - Excellent, man. I think ineffectualize mentioned something like that on the high-pod thread. It would be great for growing tropical sativas. I would like to have some easy way to reduce the hours gradually through flower.

I'm watching superpedro! want to see what you came up with the bases of the lamps, i'm guessing the aluminum will help.

if you could share your findings on LEDs, that would be great too, i want to work with it when it gets a bit cheaper and more efficient.

i wonder if 330W of PL-L would make the same heat as a 250W HPS, do you have any idea about it?

I am stoned, the smoke of this great white shark is very potent and is tasting quite good. I've started smoking some of it already though I still have some leftover outdoors. Can't help myself :D

I've got something almost ready, you will have to wait and see ;) I'm expecting 3 deliveries of toys early in the week, I hope to get the thread up and running before I go on vacation.
The cab is in for a major update :)

330w of pl-l emit more total heat than a 250w hps, but pl-l emits the heat at a lower temperature making for less IR radiation.
