TexMex McDirt's Stealth CFL Micro Bagseed Grow

My Objective:
Personal stealth micro grow. Nothing fancy, just don’t want to pay for weed any more. Hoping to get just enough decent refer to keep me happy and healthy. No smell, no tell, no sell. Everything for this grow was purchased at Goodwill, HomeDepot, Lowes, Wal-Mart, Newegg.com etc… No grow shops or hydro stores. I have been reading the forums here for months, while planning. Too many people here have inspired me to list them, so if you see anything in my grow and you think I stole the idea from you, I probably did.

Cabinet:
A $15 desk from Goodwill. I cut the desktop part off, so all that is left is the drawer side. It now looks like a tall nightstand or small dresser and it lives in a closet. Dimensions inside are 14” d x 20” w x 26” h. It's about 1.8 sq ft, 4.2 cu ft. The interior is lined with foil tape. Couldn’t easily find mylar and didn’t feel like painting.

Lighting: CFL
2 x 42w, 2700k, 2600 lumens
1 x 27w, 5500k, 1700 lumens
111 watts total
6900 lumens.
58 watts/sq ft
3630 lumens/sq ft.

Ventilation:
Cooler Master R4-L2R 120mm. It is rated at 90 CFM, 19 dBA and static pressure of 3.04 mm/H20. I would say it runs a louder than 19 dBA at 12v, but it is acceptable for my stealth requirements, plus I can lower the v's when the lights are off during the day if needed. It moves a lot of air too. Don’t ever let anyone tell you CFLs don’t put off any heat, they do. So I also cut a piece of plexiglass for under the lights. At first my temps were always in the high 80s - low 90s when the lights were on. Now the temps haven’t gotten higher than 83, perfect. I highly recommend some sort of heat shield like that if you can engineer it into your space. Made all the difference in mine.

Good temps now

Passive intakes at the bottom covered with peices of odor absorbing filter

Odor control:
SugarBear style carbon scrubber made with Wal-Mart mesh pencil holders and aquarium activated carbon. So far no smell, but the girls are not putting off much odor yet. I can supplement with Renuzit air fresheners or such if needed later too. I hope the filter holds up.

Soil:
75% Lowes Sta-Green All Purpose Potting Mix
25% Perlite.

Water:
Tap. My water was really high in ph (7.6+), I think that also had something to do with their slow ealry growth. Got a ph tester kit and some ph down. 15 drops of ph down per 1/2 gallon of water is perfect. Watering 2 times a week.

Nutes:
Schultz 10-15-10
Alaska Fish Emulsion 5-1-1
Superthrive
2 droppers full Shultz, 1 Tsp fish emulsions and a couple of drops superthrive per 1/2 gallon of ph’ed water.

I should have started feeding a lot sooner than I did, I thought my soil had more nutes in it and I didn’t want to burn em. Boy did they grow sloooow in veg. Now I am feeding them every watering, I skip it here or there, but they seem to love it so far.

Strains:
Unknown bagseed. I have a film canister holding hundreds of seeds from the bags of shwag I have paid good money for.

Progress:
I started germ’ing 6 seeds (paper towel method) Saturday 10/24/2009. The first 4 that popped went into soil Monday 10/26/09 (each in a 1 liter soda bottle cut down and wrapped in duct tape). Two days later on Wednesday 10/28/09 I had 4 sprouts. So that is what I am calling day 1 of veg. They started in a pc case with one 42w 2700k CFL while I was finishing the cab. They were moved into the cab Tuesday 11/4/09. I spent a few weeks dialing in the cab and making changes and they grew ok, not like I had hoped. I knew this first grow would be to learn. I made the 12/12 switch Wednesday 11/18/09.

So now I have 2 confirmed girls, confirmed Friday 12/04/09. I have them LST’ed. Blue pot girl was the first seed that popped and the first sprout that broke soil and she is my favorite.

Welcome TexMex McDirt, full on what an entrance to the micro section, you can tell you have done your homework, awesome job on your cab and your scrubber looks top notch. Love the fact that no hydro shops are involved, something I strive to do regularly. Make sure you post some pics over in the CFL Club also. Great work keep it up bro.

Happy Gardening All.
Peace.

Very nice, that is a sweet cab, it looks very promising. I would love to see some AF's in there.

BTW, I'm using two of those 120mm Cooler Master fans for my q9550 CPU (quad-core @3.83ghz). They are great fans and move a ton of air, plus the blue LED's look cool.
(Newegg, FTW!!!)

#1cheesebuds - Thanks for looking in. I have followed all of your threads. Cheers!

b00m - I did do a lot of homework. I also have read thru the CFL Club thread extensively. I'll post a note over there soon.

TheGreenBastard - Thanks for the kind words.

ScrubNinja - Your threads have been so helpful to me, the pc fan thread was great for me to learn more about ventilation. Which was something I thought would be easy, but was probly the most difficult thing to dial in. Thanks for the skoolin'.

ukpitbull - Thanks for lookin' in.

Thanks for the kind words there.

I neglected the girls a bit while we had some company in town staying with us. Went the longest they have been without watering, 8 days, but they held up. The real problem was that the blue pot girl grew up into the plexi and got a little burnt on a leaf and maybe on one bud site too. No biggie, but a little sad. I will post some new pics in a bit when there is some good looking growth to update on. So far still growing along nicely.

So there it is. Day 40 of 12/12. Got a ways to go, especially that red pot hooker. I think she is going to be a slow one.

Happy Holidays ICMag'ers.

This looks awesome TexMex - blue pot girl is really fattening up nicely.

I like the plexiglass idea - been thinking about doing that in my own cab. It's good that you did a lot of research before diving into growing. Pays off in the long run...

le crunch - Thanks for lookin in. It took me some work to figure out how to get the plexi into the space since I already had the lights and carbon scrubber in place. I ended up cutting a corner notch out for the carbon scrubber (a hacksaw blade cut the plexi rather nicely). After I installed that the temps went down 10 degrees.

This is my 1st run and while I think I will end up with a harvest of some sorts it was really more for dialing in the cab and learning. My next grow I hope my plant(s) will be a bit more filled in. I made a few early mistakes that I learned my lessons from.

Cheers!

So as the girls move thru flowering I decided to swap out one bulb, the 27w 5500k bulb for a third 42w 2700k bulb. So I now have:
3 x 42w CFL
126w total
7800 lumens total
about 66 watts per sq foot
about 4105 lumens per sq foot

Cheers!

I found a local hardware store that carries Fox Farm Tiger Bloom. Going to go get some and switch the girls to that for their last bit of flowering.

Happy growing ICMag folks!

Week 8

Week 8

So today was the end of week 8 of 12/12. Things are going quite well. I did switch from the Schultz 10-15-10 to Fox Farm Tiger Bloom. To be honest I can't tell if they are liking it any more. I am glad to say the carbon filter is still holding up. I did throw one Renuzit air freshener in the closet just to be safe, but so far no smell is escaping the cab. I got one of those Radio Shack microscopes. That thing is a piece of crap, but I was able to get an ok look at the girls trichs, they need more time. Figured as much, but wanted to start checkin'.

Here are the girls in the cab. LST'ed hard and still lovin it. I think I might try topping with light LST next run. Just to see what works best in my cab.

picture.php

Here is Blue Pot Girl. She is really getting fat. I think she needs 2-3 more weeks. Her trichs are all still quite clear. Some may be clouding up. It was really hard to tell. She measures about 18 inches from soil to the top of the main bud.

Here is Red Pot Girl. She is still a lanky Sativa whore. I think she will need easily 2-3 more weeks, if not 4. She is packing it on slowly but surely. Slowly being the key word. She measures about 22 inches from soil to the top of her main bud.

So there ya go. I'm beginning to think I might just pull this off. Once I got my cab dialed in and just let em grow it has been easy. I will post another update next probly around 10 weeks, see where we're at.

Mahalo!
