my (potential) grow cab

hello. i forget everything, so i figure if i get on here and document it all, i can remember it easier. i have also run into problems with a few things, and would like just some advice in general. so...down to brass tacks. i apologize for my non-organized train of thought, i hope it's not too difficult to follow. also, sorry for the sideways pictures. i'm just too lazy to fix it. won't happen again, though :santa1:

there is what i'm planning to grow in. the area i have painted white right now is 15"Lx15"Wx16.5"H. i plan to cut most of the floor out, and put a res in the bottom drawer so that i can easily move it in and out. if i were to do so, the height would change from 16.5" to 21.5".

i plan on using CFLs, but i'm not sure exactly how i would go about mounting them i'm going for ~200w CFLs.
eventually, i plan on doing a scrog (perhaps the sides angled up for more surface area?) with either one or two plants, but for now i think i will do LST on one plant just so i can get a few clones (thinking about building a PC mother/clone case).
so far i have no genetics besides bagseeds that i'm not sure will germ, but i plan on ordering some seeds once i get a little bit more dough and get a harvest under my belt.
eventually, i plan on using DWC in food storage container, but for the first grow i was thinking about doing soil for the sake of simplicity. good idea or bad idea?
i'm waiting for two of these to arrive so i can finish my carbon filter. i'm not quite sure how i'm going to do it, but here is my plan...
the circular holes in the back of the cab are going to be cut out to make a rectangle (yay surface area) and that will be where my carbon will be deposited...but i haven't really come up with a way to get it to stay vertically packed in there. any ideas? also, the fans will be mounted to a plastic bin in order to make sure that they only pull air from the cab.
intake will be 6 1" pieces of PVC with the insides spraypainted black, then covered with pantyhose with the end shoved through to make it totally lightproof. also don't know how to mount these, since i had to drill 1 3/4" holes (if i remember right :smokeit:) in order for the pvc to fit. was thinking some kind of caulk or adhesive...
i have nothing for the actual growth of the plant and the nearest hydro store is over an hour's drive away, so i'm probably going to go with miracle gro organic for the first plant if that's the route i decide to take.

damn i feel like i'm forgetting everything...who knows. i just figured i'd go ahead and start this because it's incredibly hard coming up with all the ideas without having someone knowledgeable to bounce ideas off of.

happy holidays IC!

Good luck. You don't need Hydro stores to grow weed. My grow is all from the everyday stores like Home Depot and WalMart. It really can be done quite easily.

Cheers!

For mounting your lights, I suggest using these cheap bathroom vanity light bars. They are easily obtainable at Lowes or Home Depot and are cheaper than buying individual sockets and piecing something together like so many people on this forum do. They come in groups of 3, 4, 6 and 8.

The covering comes off in seconds without tools and look what you have

You can drill a couple of holes and squeeze them closer together (something I have done) or just use it like it is. Also, the metal bar can be easily cut using a hack saw or sawsall. Just get a couple wire nuts and connect a lamp cord to it. Very easy and very inexpensive. Some places have these at thrift stores. I get used ones for $2 all the time.

while i do entirely agree, there are certain things that can't be bought anywhere besides hydro stores like hydroton, rockwool, and many types of nutes discussed on here. if i go, i plan on making one single trip.

hey man thanks for the advice; i'll have to have a look around lowe's next time i get a chance. i was kind of hoping to keep the lights mobile, but i think i have an idea on how to accomplish that.

tried to germ a few seeds, only one has popped thus far. installed my 2 new scythe slipstream 120mm fans (you can see them in the back) though i don't have everything i want done on the inside. soil mix is 2 parts miracle gro organic to 1 part miracle gro perlite. i just put some of it in a rubbermaid and shake it around to get it nice n mixed up. installed light trap pvc elbows which are spray painted black on the inside then have panty hose on the outside with the excess pushed through and tied at the top...lightproof, still allows for tons of air to flow in. though i need 6 more of them :O. watering with distilled, ph runoff was 6.0 today.

dont know if anyone is watching, but just in case you are, thanks for seein what i'm up to. any advice?

man. fuck the midwest snow. we got dumped on. almost ruined christmas. however, that did nothing to stand in the way of my sprout. it broke soil on christmas day, and these are the photos. i watered once on christmas day and haven't since because the soil isn't dry. ambient temps were a bit higher (last pic has thermometer) because my fans kept unsticking themselves. the problem was the duct tape losing its stickiness. the solution? more duct tape. i haven't thought of a better way yet.

let's see here..day 3 since sprout. not much has changed except i added more duct tape and turned off one of the lights for the sake of temperature, and i figure it's only a sprout it doesn't need a bunch quite yet. i plan on cutting out more of the back and adding a small pc or desk fan when i can either find a DC adapter or make a trip to wally world to pick up a small desk fan. i'm still partially snowed in.

happy holidays to whoever is watching. advice on how to make things better is definitely welcome, i'm just kind of going with the flow.:tree:

also, how do i get pictures to appear in post? i drag them over from the window and just get the hyperlink..

i have two of the vanity light fixtures but they're too long for my cab by at least 2" which is no problem...i just need to figure out a way to cut it. i live in an apartment so noisy things aren't exactly an option. any suggestions? i use things like a drill fairly regularly so drills are obviously fine. i also have a rotozip that i have used before but i'm pretty sure that it's way too loud to use with my neighbors right above me.

alright, i shaped a few things up.

i put a reflector (not permanent light fixture, just until i can cut my vanity lights to size) over my 2x 26w daylight CFLs and got an adapter so i could plug another fan in blowing on my plant...temps are staying mid 70s, humidity in the 20s.

also decided to fix my ventilation problems...i was just using duct tape, but now have upgraded to weather stripping and screws. feels very solid.

been a couple days since i last updated since there is relatively no interest, but it's as much for me as it is for you, even though i would like advice.
picture.php

found this at lowe's today for $5, 3-in-1 hacksaw for metal wood and...well they call it flush. idk. it was originally $14, clearance for $5. used it to make my new light fixture and voila...6 lights instead of 2.

fan positioned on the bulbs, no idea what temps will be...let's hope for the best.
anyway, i'm worried about my plant (i also found another seed that looked half decent from some pretty skunky nugs and started to germ with the paper towel method, looks like i'll probably have another seed to plant as it looks like the taproot is about to poke out).
picture.php

does this look droopy to anyone else?
picture.php

it's probably from overwatering, which is unfortunate because i just watered it. oh well, i'll just let it dry out and see what happens.

6- 26w CFLs now, 5 days from sprout. :santa1:'s magic made it pop up on xmas day :p

new pics of the cab with most of the hacksawing done. i'm going to cut out the floor that exists now and use the bottom drawer (not pictured i don't think) for another 5.5" of vertical space.

Oh get outta here! Thanks though. I killed so many seedlings from overwatering very recently, that's the only reason I know. Even being highly concious of over-watering, I still could barely get a seedling to live past that first hump. The saviour was jiffy pellets. Can't praise them enough.

it's a week since sprout and hereis my plant!

i think it looks kind of weird but then again when i was sawing i knocked it over...whoops. leaves are still droopy, perhaps the fan is causing problems? it's ~30cfm and it's only like 6" away, but it's also cooling my bulbs so it's kind of necessary.

also germ'd another seed so it's chillin in my box now...probably gonna saw out the floor soon so i can have a bit more vertical space and then figure out how i'm gonna do some scrog screens

Looks cool. I wouldn't worry about the fan, as long as it's just vibrating it and not leaning it over to the ground or leaves flailing in the wind. It looks semi protected at this stage by the cup walls.

Nice micro cab you have there!

What soil are you using?

Any special brand? or backyard soil? or some commercial soul?

Reason I'm asking is because it looks like MG soil. There is a person i know who is struggling with his plant because of soil problem.

it is indeed MG soil, but it's not preferted. it's the organic choice, npk levels are .1-.05-.05. i mixed 2 parts MG organic with 1 part MG perlite for my soil. so far seems to be working okay, and i've seen many a grow using MG organic do at least okay. the reason that MG gets the bad name is because it has powerful fertilizer in it at first that causes burn in seedlings and young plants, but with the low levels of npk, i think it is okay. besides, i haven't seen any burn yet. pictures later today, i'm working on my carbon filter. hacksawing takes forever..

thanks for the compliment bro, i've worked very hard on this cab and i'm quite proud that it functions as well as it does. i just have a problem with the RH, it's abysmally low and i'm not sure how to fix it.
