How do you get your buds to foxtail?

Foxtails don't need high temps or light leaks. These had neither. They're just a pain. Shooting into the light, they need constant trimming and training or they force you to lift the lamp, robbing bigger colas of the light. 10 times the work for 1/10th the yield, they're not worth the time it takes to trim. I throw mine out.

those look like underdeveloped colas to me.
Some colas are not spiral in nature and most times are a solid spike.
However, I'm at peace with the reply to my comment.
But, why are light leaks the issue. If that spot on the bud is under a light leak, say 24 hours of light, why would it flower unless it was an AF strain.
Try this instead. There's a solid flowering bud trying to expand from the inside. A branch, yes, a branch, the calyxs are not floating, find a weak spot in the mantle of the bud, and manages to break through into the light and produced a bud on top of the main bud.
While I'm no expert on such minor details, I would like to compared my description of how these tiny buds form to the way an island is formed. Magma flows below the mantle and Earths crust along the sea floor. The magma finds a weak spot. Erupts with enough force to break through to the surface and forms a cone of lava. Over time the eruptions, or growth continues, and if there is enough energy, the end result is an island.

Myself, I think certain 'Foxtails' look incredibly beautiful. One of my plants dreads out almost like a braided strand of dense flowers. I will borrow a camera soon!

who cares if it foxtails, i think its from heat stress at times, iim sure its also genetic at tiimes also.

This is what I consider foxtailing.. My foxtail pheno of DSD. In a few days the tails will double in length.

Mmmmmm foxtails - in the reference of a breeding environment, are specifically caused by genetics.
Otherwise we are referring to stretched, wispy buds, partially an effect of genetics, and some due to environment.

or some of Djs thai x oaxaca genetics can define a foxtail simply
... as will many landraces- which only become wispier in cold and stressed environments (nutes/ light leaks- as freezer boy mentioned!)
Biddy early from Magus has a foxtail pheno sometimes if i recall correctly...
Surprised no one has specifically mentioned that foxtail genes and buds can be linked to extremely pleasing head highs and fruit or floral patterns~ similarly to hollow stems facilitation of thc production in the plant- so do fox tails seem to hold a little surprise for those whom wish to go the extra mile for a good head stash!!! Mmmmm, but is it fruity and a light purple fading to arange, red, and pink? or did it scratch you nitrogen burned lungs up. Some persons seem to see the difference., others can't... hehe 
Also, sometimes it is hard to see the value of a foxtail, once it is choked in plastic.
Bag appeal- id really relate to the users knowledge and willingness to try new things.
We should all try something new every once in awhile...

the actual angle of the light striking the plant also seems to influence 'foxtailing'... w/ vert bare-bulb 1ks... if lower lights below tops of plants, creates shadows that make top of plant like moon w/ sun, almost... so other side shaded... this is region foxtails appear 1st... then if angles kept, entire plant can fully bloom...
may be that angles of light in nature signals times to fully flower or be barren... so exerting more reproductive mass in order to catch pollen

1.... the genetics. i hear that white rhino got its name from its coated white crystals, and its rhino type horns or foxtails as they are now called. this could be a myth, but if it is, its a very old myth
2.... STRESS. be it of 1 nature or another. excess c02, heat, lack of oxygen, light intensity blah blah blah
of course this is just my opinion

Out of 20 or more grows i got them when my humidity was 73% average with Somas NYCD.

Foxtailing are imo genetic, never had a non foxtailing clone go foxy on me. These two apollo11(not clones) were grown side by side one foxtailed like crazy the other just nice and ordinary.
thai genetics are the most likely to foxtail for genetic reasons. high temps and high N with excess P in mid - late flowering will encourage it for the wrong reasons.
here is my very thai leaning Blueberry at 10 weeks. ive tried starving it and it still tries to do the same thing so i am happy that it is genetic
harvested at 12 weeks - here it is dry. absolutely wonderful smell, taste and high. no trimming problems either as it's all calyx
