old house + northern lights+ cold temps

anybody grown northern lights with no heat..i think temps are fine during lights on but when lights are off it gets chilly..flowering setup is a 400 watt vertical hps and 3,4 ft fluoro bulbs and they seem to be doin fine. i really need to put a veg box in the same room that has 4,4 ft fluoros....all i've got for heat is a kerosene heater, will that hurt the plants?

How cold does it get?

Can you put lights on during the coldest hours of the day if they aren't already?

Is the heater vented? Whats a kerosene heater look like?

A long time ago, in a land far away. I had a similiar situation where it was getting real cold in the growroom at night. Down below 50f if I remember correctly. The plants were fine. Are your temps getting lower than that?

you are going to have slow slow slow growth

Your plants will go into dormancy everynight(lights out)

You will require some additional heat

Tell me about it...mine were in a metal shed with temps routinely down into the 30s. They're a month old and still only have 3 sets of leaves! Mg deficient too.

I just bought some silver rolled insulation and encircled the grow with it...it worked wonders. It was 31 last night and 52 in with the plants...where it would have been 34 without the insulation.

Weed likes it warm. It will tolerate the cold, but it grows really slow...

Unfortunately, I'm stuck with my metal shed...much worse than a drafty old house...

BTW, I also got a CMH 400W bulb yesterday...hung it vertically and it's BRIGHT. I think the "girls" will be happy with it...it's a very "white" looking light.

My experience was in a cellar, it went below 50f. Only relation i experienced was more stretching with low night tempratures.

These had a rootzone temp just above 55f for the last month and a darkcycle air temp down to freezeing , running a week late and turning metallic black.

Colour effect varies by phenotype within the cross , the bud is particularly stickey and has a suprisingly strong smell.

Get a small ceramic heater with a thermostat to set the temp. Get your temps over 60F after lights out. :smokeit:

Hanks right on point cowboy. You can get a ceramic "space heater" at any of your favorite stores' 10-15 bucks should get you something small that will adequately provide supplemental heat at night to keep your garden from crawling.

laid a thermometer in the floor during lights out and it wAs 55 dgrees f..was 46 outside which is 15 degrees higher than it has been..only reason i was hesitant about a heater was that during lights on it gets real nice in there. i appreciate all you fellers experience.

Ok so lets say cold temps are slowing the plants down, would that also mean you need to extend the flowering time as well.

As in an 8 week flowering plant would then become a 9-10 week plant OR more? Or would it still finish on time just with shitty yields?

Here's the deal- everything will be worse or less (weight) with low temps. But to answer your question- it will take longer. How much longer no one can say. Learn to read your plants. Get those temps up, period.

Exactly what I am trying to do currently. Hope the 400w veg cab tossing warm air into the intake of the flower cab will do the trick but if not then I will be investing in a small heater for lights off.

I find it funny, first my only issues were my tents being TOO HOT and now it is exactly opposite. I prefer the growth in hot compared to cold seeing the growth I am NOT enjoying right now lol.

I am going to go in there and yell at them for awhile, sometimes a stern talking to does the trick as well.

They take longer and have a shitty yield as well , hazes and purer sats do better than heavy indicas in my experience.

Hovering above zero but with warm roots an 8 weeker is takeing 10+ and will be down at least 25 percent in yield.

Seeded plants are takeing 50+ days from a summer 35 - 40 , seems to effect seed production more than bud.

Have never run this cold before and am happy to let it ride for the interest , have a fan heater ready for for when i see the first icicle on the reflector at lights on.

The quality of cold grown bud has always been better than summer indoor with the same clones , smaller and less leafy plants can be dropped a pot size and more plants run to maintain yield at normal levels.

Sold into the right market it would fetch a higher price that would cover the lower yield , a local 5K producer runs the same cut all year round and it sells under three names depending on the colour in a low heat setup.

Last years gem was widow being lapped up as Blackberry kush by the local muppets.

Same situation

Same situation

So is it safe to say you never want those cold temps? I mean I have been led to believe that colder temps bulk buds in flower, and excessive heat makes airy buds. I have been put in this same situation before, maybe not THAT chilly but that was my justification :p am i wrong?

I'm having temp issues right now. Have a damn small space heater going. It has a thermostat so it stays fairly warm but drops quickly when the heater isn't on. I'm seeing pretty slow growth rate right now.
