Hey Mj (or anybody really) is this stuff (the herbal extract) basically EM made out of herbs? Can I add it to aerated teas, you think? Please say yes because uh, I just added it to my first ewc tea. Is that cool? :1help:

Hey scrub I think you would be fine adding that, it's just microherd.

with the bokashi bran, there's threads in the organic section and other pages on the web about not paying $90 a bag for the bran and making the liquid at home using molasses, water and milk.

Ah molasses, is there nothing it can't do???

Cheers Bass, I'm just sort of confused. I'm pretty sure the HE is basically EM (I can tell by the way they acronymize things, lol), which if I understand right are anaerobic beneficial microbes, as against the aerobic ones I'm hoping I normally multiply in my tea bucket. The herbal extract is a ferment too. So I'm wondering if there's any point in adding it to aerobic teas. It says it helps break down manures so maybe it's good for guano tea or something. Like maybe it's better just mixed with water and applied? That's what they recommend on the label. By the way the herbal extract smells really nice. Like passionfruit wine.

I do have some EM mother culture if it hasn't gone off yet :biglaugh: The lady at the organic store gave me the hookup for the cheap stockfeed bran at another place, so I should be good to go with that soon. I even bought a bottle of soft drink to make it in! Endless budget! Got a bit of a compost heap happening too, really it's just leaves in a pile, but I gotta start somewhere :)

Cheers man :) I'm trying my best to understand. I'll be very happy if I pull off this newly flowering grow with no major problems. I'll up some pics in a short while.

Wish I could help you cause most of the time it baffles me bro, but I think you are heading down the right track, I would add the HE into a brew tea maybe as a tester, but mixed just with water like the label says could be the go. It all looks and sounds good bro but I haven't come across it before(shit in all my experience lol). Props on the compost pile bruz you be cranking out some good soil soon enough, I've got 2 on the go and need 2 more just to keep up with my needs as well as the family garden. Waiting patiently for the latest and greatest pics.

Peace.

Haha fully ghetto, I love it. One becomes tired of professionalism all the time. :biglaugh:

Anyways, for 72 watts of blazing bright T8s, I think the PDs are looking pretty awesome  I gave em a guano and fish emulsion tea and it's helped them come better, they'll get this EWC & HE & Guano tea tomorrow. I noticed I can leave them go for aaaages without water, so I think the bio-bugs and whatever other goodies I got in there lets me get away with mad overwatering. It rules.

There's a male in there that's come out. Here is the attempt at vert, if anyone can work out wtf is going on, please tell me :biglaugh:

picture.php

No leaves burn, even the heading tips rubbing on the base. I just kind of supercrop it and hope for the best.:rasta: When should you not perform any more supercropping? Anyone know? They've just started to bud really, but need more s'cropping.

There have been zero fungus gnats for a few days now, with no treatment apart from 2 dry outs in close succesion. I highly enjoy growing cannabis. :D

Peace:smokeit:

Edit: oh hey boom, check out the compost bin aisle of Bunnings next time you're there. You will see bokashi bins and packets of bran, and also some compost activator packets (Bio-wish) which I suspect are related. Of course, don't buy any there, it's way overpriced. Maryjohn has been into bokashi for a while and di.try put me onto it originally. It's interesting stuff the whole EM thing, like nature in a bottle...cool if it works. People are even ingesting the herbal extract.

G'day oldbootz. Nah bro, the only Pure is the big girl about to finish. I'm hoping one or two grains of the immature pollen magically worked so I get at least a seed, that would be cool. :) I'm not planning on keeping it as a strain though. I doubt it would reveg after going so far anyway.

The male in those pics is the "keeper" of the first 3 TWxPD males that showed. Most of the plants aren't sexed yet. I think there's one verified female. I also have the best male of the Leda Uno bunch sitting in the cupboard. I'm hoping I can reveg the best females out of these new strains, then make attempt #2 at fem seeds the next time. One of the Leda Uno's has some deep purple stemmage happening and I'm hoping it's a keeper - the most indica too. :abduct:

Edit: The male Leda Uno that I kept is the very first seedling I put into the ccfl pod! It spent a whole day at 100º and I was surprised it even lived.

The liquid you make at home is just wild lactic acid bacteria. Not the same as EM for treating soil, but just as good for bokashi.

Scrub, I checked out that herbal product. It's just fermented plant extract, which you can make yourself with the naturally occurring anaerobes which can be found on the leaf surface. Ask JayKush in the organics section, he makes tons of it. DON'T put it in aerated tea. Waste of time. Apply it directly.

These products are NOT microherd in my book. They contain mostly facultative anaerobes, which can indeed improve soil structure and water retention, but cannot on their own undertake the labors of the herd. That's an aerobic job.

EM is great at cleaning up soil, which a wild culture may not be able to do. This has primarily to do with certain kinds of photosynthetic bacteria, which is why it is often brewed with bright light. If you are in transition to organic soil from using chemical nutes, EM is a great way to clean up the mess.

Wicked, thanks for the advice! It makes it easier for me that way anyway :) So I've noticed the guys who seem to know what they're discussing don't appear too keen on aerated guano teas... On the site for the HE, they show a lot of manure I think it's maybe pigpoo slop, that they treat with HE and then apply to the field. So since guano is poo, how about I mix guano and HE and don't bubble it? It sounds logical to me anyway. :smokeit:

Bubbling guano was always a waste of time. You got the right idea. Remember not to overdo the guano!

If you are going to bubble, do it because you are getting soil organisms to replicate. Guano has been all dried and bagged. Nothing to culture there. And it's too specific as a food source, which I imagine reduces diversity.

Do the folks you talked to ferment the guano, or just spray and spread? EM works just as well, I'm sure. Did you buy the herbal stuff yet?

The guano I use is actually a liquid, I dunno if that's any better, lulz. I definitely get your point about it being a poor source of good organisms, but still, there are other sources I put in the tea like the bio-bugs, compost etc? Wouldn't these guys eat up the guano, if the plant needed P? Basically I think I have a fairly well rounded soil mix now, I used a lot of products, but it seems to be low on N which surprised me (maybe an effect of fungus gnats early on), but all the ferts I used were low in P, so I totally expected it, and when I found out about high P guano, it seemed perfect for my situation, pretty much because of it's specifity.

I saw that stuff, I think it's rock phosphate, at the store so I'll read up on that for future. Thanks again mang.

You want to feed an aerated tea something balanced, like fish hydrolysate or molasses. Fish hydrolysate favors fungal growth a bit, molasses favors bacteria. Guano will select for a much smaller subset of what is in the soil, no? Yes, feed it to your soil, but directly, so it can digest it, if you will. The purpose of the tea is different. It builds the engine. Guano is fuel, if you will. If you are just treating the soil of your indoor plants, no need to brew, btw. Just chuck a bunch of compost in water, stir, and use it to water. You can put molasses or whatever if you like.

Have you watched any of dr. ingham's videos on youtube? she explains where all your nitrogen went. If your soil was healthy, it's still there, just locked up in organisms, which is good. If the soil was unhealthy, and anoxic, all that nitrate becomes ammonia, and poof, it's gone.

Rock Phosphate - make sure it is soft rock, and not super phosphate or triple phosphate, which is nasty stuff.

Molasses - if you can't get it in OZ, maybe a malt or syrup made from brown rice?

Cheers bro. We gots crazy molasses down here luckily. Plenty of cows and hippies so it's not too hard to find :) I even saw in the organic store they had powdered molasses with DE added. I wouldn't use that for feeding microbes of course. :biglaugh: This is the rock they sell so it looks good:

Full season phosphate supply without the lockups. NTS Soft Rock™ has virtually no cadmium, is a bio-friendly, colloidal clay-based rock phosphate.
(less than 1 ppm cadmium)

I asked them about hydrolyzed fish and they had no idea what it was.

Well thanks for all the heads ups. I've read the SFI site but it's not like I understand all of it : Today is 'get high and learn about organics' day though so I'll watch some vids. Should be fun! I also need to re-read a lot of the main threads on here because even in the last fortnight, I've come a long way. Thanks for explaining it slowly.

You are embarking on a very rewarding journey scrub! Organics is funny. All this research and thinking, and in the end my job is mostly just to add water. I have almost no input once the plant is growing. And with plant nannies I don't even open the cab every day unless they are in flower, and then it's just to look.

Hey boom, it sucks huh? I'm going to hit the org store up for a job, then I can go to work and learn about organics  Seriously though, I'm gonna give them my resume, I hit it off well and I could tell she thought I knew what I was talking about because I asked about things they hadn't heard of :biglaugh:

Yeah mj, that would be a nice stage to be at. What I'd really like one day is a permaculture sort of setup. To have my whole property functioning as part of the same system, with the same ease.

that would kick ass scrub. that's a lot of work too. for now I have to settle for the grid, but with some bokashi and a worm bin to give me a green style if not substance. After all, I grow full sun plants indoors so I can smoke them. Now I just need a jet ski and a big truck.

Re: A lot of work - Hell yeah. When I was a kid I was totally into gardening, had a huge veggie garden etc, but once my parents moved on, I've had nowhere permanent to garden. Since I rent it's too depressing to lose everything on a regular basis. I had about half an acre of veggies at a recent place and had to move on before they were ready. :( There is cheap land here though, out in the sticks. All it would take to buy some is 4 large plants outdoor, and a brief dive into the criminal underworld. It's very tempting, but :angrymod::jawdrop::Bolt: if that makes sense, lol.
