Vortex Fans

I'm looking at this fan http://cgi.ebay.ca/New-Powered-Fan-...in_2?hash=item1e58827ec9&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 to run my cool tube exhaust and carbon scrubber. I would be using reducers throughout the run i.e. the carbon scrubber I have is a 4" and the cool tube is a 6". In my mind this is not really a big deal but I've been wondering two things: Will reducing from 8" to 4" for the scrubber create too much resistance on the vortex motor and burn it out? The other thing I've been wondering about is will reducing the 8" vortex to 4" (scrubber) and 6" (cool tube) increase the CFM's of the vortex or does it make a difference.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

I am not too sure of the duct reduction there, I would think it would work fine unless you had a huge run of ducting, or trying to run the fan on full power. You will need a variable speed controll I would think. The filter will have a CFM rating somewhere on the box/paperwork, you just want to make sure you don't blow the guts out of it.

That fan is a knock off vortex though, I am not sure if that matters to you. When I was researching for my set up an old timer told me to go with the Vortex as it was built to last and very quiet, they are spendy though.
I went through businesslights.com for my fans and variable speed controls, this was a few years ago but they had the best price I could find.

it wont make any resistance, that will be your problem. It would be pulling the air through the filter too fast not allowing it to scrub properly. I always used a fan smaller than my scrubber,,,,,,,,,14inch mountain with a 12inc vortex, i use a 6inch vortex on my 8inch mountain air.

I was looking at those fans the other day, let us know hwat its like if you end up getting one. I was thinking about one for a cool tube application.

the amperage is too low. I have a six inch that pulls 440 and is 1 1/4 amp. also it doesn't say how much pressure it can push or vacuum it can suck. I wouldn't plan on it being nearly as good as a quality eight inch but if your reducing it anyhow... And they all get thier motors from the same place is bs, sounds like a salesman to me. You think that China and India don't have ten diff. factories each pumping out cheap motors of varying quality? That kinda stuff was true in america in the fifties when there were diff. companies making diff. fans out of same parts, eventually all but one go belly up though.

I've decided to give them a shot so I have a 4" and an 8" coming to me. He gave me an amazing deal on buying both so I could not resist :) Plus it never hurts to have an extra fan around. Better to have more then not enough.

The 4" will do my carbon scrubber and the 8" will run my cool tube as well as exhaust.

I'll update this once I get everything up and running to let you knoow how they work.

Peace

I've never run anything but speed-controlled Vortexes (Vortices?) and they are dead-nuts reliable, never even a hiccup after years of continuous use.

harveyj, have you recieved your fans yet? And are they loud at all? I have a 4'' vortex fan and it does the job very well I believe its at 172 cfm. Mostly just an air whooshing sound. Curious if your fans have been working for you.

I got a 6in Vortex and a 6in Can Fan HO......I use my Vortex fan to cool my lights and I have my carbon filter( 6 x 24) hooked to the Can Fan exhausting stale air. I really like both fans it's a hard choice. You'll probably just have to hook up your fan and ducting a few different ways until you figure it out....kinda trail and error and once you get everything right you'll be set for good. Goodluck Harvey......it seems like you can never have enough fans anyway...at least it seems that way for me lol

I've not hooked up my 8" fan yet but I do have my 4" hooked up to my carbon scrubber and I'm using it as an exhaust fan that runs to an exhaust vent in the roof of my house so that the air gets sent outside after it has been scrubbed. No smell outside yet, that being said I'm only three weeks into flower.

I'd like to hook up the 8" but it's a bit too loud to run at the moment. I will use it eventually when I don't have to worry about who hears it.

Im a canfan fan myself. Ive got a 6incher that makes no noise or vibration and its rated at about 440cfm. Its not clear to me if your using the scrubber to reduce noise or to reduce smell or both but if your looking for a quiet reliable fan id suggest canfan. Been using it for nearly a decade now and ive had no problems. Seems like everyone has been talking about vortex, I just felt the need to talk up canfan. Either way I wish you luck in your decisions. Ultimatley you need to buy what suites YOUR grow. gl man!

I also have my 6in Can Fan and carbon filter hooked to an exhaust vent that takes it outside......but I use a seperate fan to just cool my lights/hoods....the 6in Vortex. Your 8in fan should be a beast....you can get a speed controller for around $25 and slow it down some....which in turn will make it quiter. I use a speed control on my Can Fan and carbon filter......you'll want your fan thats hooked to the carbon filter to run a bit slower to make sure the stale air going outside has been cleaned. And when you pull it through slower it will help combat the smell and let the carbon do it's job. I have a 7 x 7 x 8tall room and run my Can Fan about 3/4 or less to full power and it does a good job.....but when I let the fan run full blast 100% it didn't work as good about cleaning the exhausted air. How big is your room? You might be able to use the 8in fan after you slow it down with a speed control....it will be alot quiter and still should to a great job

I found this, keep in mind its using the Can-Fan with the Can-Filter. This should help you to pick the right fan for you carbon filter. (DiameterxHeight) 5.5"x18" filter - 5"(206CFM) fan. 5.5"x25" filter - 5"(206CFM) fan. 12"x13" filter - 6"(270CFM) fan. 16.5"x19.7" filter - 8"(493CFM) fan. 12"x26" - 8"(493CFM) fan. Like wvkindbud38 said and/or you use can fan you should buy a speed controller which will slow down the force of the air through the filter making less noise and cleaning that potent air of yours.
