"In an interview last year, Dr. Vincent Harding--a close friend of American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-68) and the first director of the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia--commented:

"Hope is really the expression of a deep sense of confidence in the possibilities that human beings can carry with them for the creation of a better world. But we can't achieve that goal simply as isolated individuals. We have to join our creativity. King used to say, we have to organize goodness.

"To organise goodness or forces for good--this is a very important point. Our movement for kosen-rufu is about tapping into the greatest force for good there is--the boundless life-force of Buddhahood inherent in each person's life--and uniting and organising that power. This is the strategy of the Lotus Sutra."

Thanks Doobie!! I thought I was disrespecting my Gohonzon by smoking! Smoking makes me feel goos. I'm not sure if it is medicinal, but it makes me feel right. And my Gohonzon has been put away too long. Thanks for the great inspiration. I'm putting it on my desk with the fruits, inscence, and the water. All that is missing is me chanting. Let me get at it: Nam Myono Renge Kyo!!!!!!!!!

Moreover, I chant the daimoku, which is the heart and core of the entire sutra,
and I urge others to do likewise. Although the mugwort growing in a hemp field
or wood marked for cutting with an inked line may not be straight to begin with,
they will as a matter of course become so.

"...the mugwort growing in a hemp field..."

I've always enjoyed this Gosho passage, which can also be translated as "...the mugwort growing in a patch of marijuana..."[!], and wondered what our Federal drug-enforcement folks have been thinking over the years about the Daishonin's occasional references to the cultivation of Cannabis sativa as a fiber crop in the Japan of his day.

The 2010 Hagerstown Almanack notes that 100 years ago "marijuana, heroin and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists would say 'Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health.' " It is also noted that Coca Cola contained cocaine rather than caffeine in those days [Actually Coke had both cocaine & caffeine. The Feds later mandated de-cocainized coca.]

Well, I guess Nichiren is telling us... "sit down, get out your bong, enjoy a
good toke & chant some daimoku!" Never mind the Feds, but make sure you drink
your sake with your wife, as he once advised Shijo Kingo..

Mugi Wasshin!

Mugi Wasshin!

It is the sharp sword of the Mystic Law and the great power of faith that enable us to completely sever that chains of suffering. Therefore, I wish to make it clear that to secure eternal freedom and happiness, you must absolutely not be cowardly, especially in faith.

Showing profound compassion for those unable to comprehend the gem of the
doctrine of three thousand realms in a single moment of life, the Buddha wrapped
it within the five characters [of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo], with which he then
adorned the necks of the ignorant people of the latter age.

It may seem perfectly all right to put ourselves and our own wishes first, to
simply follow the dictates of our emotions and cravings, but the truth is that
there is nothing more unreliable than our own mind. Life doesn't always go like
clockwork and things will not necessarily turn out as we hope or plan.
Consequently, Nichiren Daishonin frequently stressed: You should become the
master of your mind, not let your mind master you. We mustn't allow ourselves to
be ruled by a self-centered mind. Rather, we have to discipline our mind and
gain mastery over it. This is the Daishonin's strict admonition.

The sutra known as the Lotus Sutra is a scripture that has no match among all
the sacred teachings of the Buddha's lifetime. And, as indicated by its words
"between Buddhas," it can only be understood between one Buddha and another.
Those at the stage of near-perfect enlightenment or below, on down to ordinary
mortals, cannot fathom it. This is why bodhisattva Nagarjuna stated in his
Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom that persons below the level of
Buddha should simply have faith, and in that way they can attain Buddhahood.

Nigi seson. Ju sanmai......

Nigi seson. Ju sanmai......

Gongyo is a practice that calls forth and activates the infinite power that the
microcosm inherently possesses. It transforms your fate, breaks through any
apparent dead ends and converts sufferings into happiness. It creates a
transformation, a revolution of the microcosm. It is a diagram in miniature of
kosen-rufu in our lives.
