What is the point of germinating seeds in small pots?

Is it something to do with changing micro climate?

Can u grow in the main pot medium from the start?

The point is

Growing wee plants in a big container is tough. You need to get the roots to grow evenly thoughout. When there is too much medium, the roots tend to grow straight down(tap root) and could take a long time to properly fill container.

In the meantime, you are just keeping this un used soil wet, and that will cause problems

and yes you can grow your seeds in your finish medium

Let the plants tell you when they need repotting

Poke holes in your little pots if there is not already some

When you are seeing roots ( and more than just one) coming out holes, you are probably ready to transplant..If you transplant when the plants do not require it, the root mass may crumble in your hands, making transplanting about 420% harder than it needs to be

Just like Dr Dog said, you want a big, healthy root mass that will hold the soil block together when you transplant. Transplant when the soil is dry! If you try to do it with wet soil, it'll fall away and expose the roots!

With the small thin plastic pots, I flex the pot a bit to loosen the root ball. With a bigger pot with hard plastic, I just tap on it (or whack it if need be). Then I gently slide the whole mass from the pot.

Before you transplant into the larger pot, rough up the roots on the outside of the ball with your fingers. The root ends that you loosen up by doing this will then quickly grow out into the new medium in the larger pot.

Most has been said, but it should also be noted that planting a seed in a 10L container (for example) and having it turn out male is a waste of resources (space and medium).

I also think it is better, at first, growing in small pots because it allows you to have a total control of how much water you need to give them.

Plus, you don't waste as much soil

I try and get my plants to show sex before transplanting from solo size containers.. I do this to save space, so I don't waste soil, and have a huge bushy plant that might be male.. my brother plays more safe, and transplants after 3-5 nodes..

find what works for you, I hear rootbounding the plant stresses it, but I see about a 2/3 female / male ratio and I'm happy with that.
