grocery bags? effeciency?

i had to take down my bud a little earlier than i wanted too, and paper bag it in grocery bags, it had had 5-6 days hang, which is long enough to be put in paper bags i realize.

just wondering how well paper bags draw moisture out of my buds?
and should i open paper bags or leave open for any amount of time every day?

ive got 56 grocery bags ha, quarter full, sum little less to avoid moisture or mold, none of the buds are moist enuff to permentally become squished or flattened on one side, besides maybe a little bit of sum, but im not worried.

Smaller amounts go into jars. I use turkey roasting bags for large amounts. I also use the paper bags after the hang. I open them every day and it depends on how dry they are if they need to be left open for awhile or not.

below frigid-thakn you for your input. yeah im leaving the fresher ones open over night, check up on em tomorow. ill just have to check everyday til theyre ready for jars.

some of mine are still pretty fresh, like would definately squish if squeezed, will they dry fine and effectively in brown paper bags in a few days?

ive always been able to hang em til dry, never used paper bags, just trippin a little.

Paper bags have been working very well for when the trim comes back in from one of the places my trimmers are working. My drying room is a 24x24 garage with a dehumidifier that keeps the place at about 38-42% RH. So when the timmers bring their stuff in and its wet (especially after midnight- and they have been trimming till 3am most nights) i put it into the paper bags till the next day when I organize everything. I think they work more or less as well as good, uncoated cardboard boxes (without flaps on the bottom if possible- 1/2 gal mason jar boxes work great!)

I know the RH is a little low in my drying room, but I am rushing it a little bit. The stuff I dried in mid-summer in 28% RH dried fast, but the finished product was dankidy dank after a good mason jar cure.

Below Frigid: you really think that paper bags need to be opened and closed like turkey bags and jars? I am sure it doesn't hurt anything, but I think it might just be a waste of time. Am I just reading your post wrong?

nomaad-so you are using the paper bag method on sum of your wet trimmed buds for drying? i am confused with you saying 1/2 gal mason jar boxes... is it a box or a mason jar..

i feel like opening up the grocery bags makes sense, i did it today cause some is still wet a bit and just sticks together like crazy and dense, so it was good to mix it up and flip the buds and get sum fresh air in the bag... i dont know. im leaving them open tonite to hopefully get em dry a little quicker so they dont have to spend a shit load of time in the bags. but doesnt the properties of the paper bags suck moisture from the buds?

i hung for 5-6 days, the wettest is still pretty maleable and sticks together, gets a little squished on the side when underneath the rest of the buds, but i dont think theyll b any permanent damage to any from being in the bags.

Ok...sorry... not being clear. First the branches hang for about 4-5 days... then they get trimmed. it can get pretty humid where they are trimming, so sometimes the trimmed herb comes back a little damp... I put them into paper bags for 8-12 hours and they crisp right back up. I was using brown bakery weight paper bags rather than supermarket ones which are heavier. The nugs go from there (when dry) into turkey bags that get burped 2x daily till they are no longer my problem. Headstash (1/4-1/2lb per strain) goes into 1/2 gal mason jars to cure in my humidity controlled bedroom closet. I burp them 2x daily as well. More since I dip in for smoke from time to time.

The mason jar boxes I am talking about are what my trimmers trim into. They are the cardboard boxes that 1/2 gallon mason jars come in. They are perfect. No flaps inside on the bottom (glued togethr box vs taped box) for stuff to get trapped under and smushed, and no flaps at the top at all.

nomaad-awesome, thanks, thats exactly the process ive gone throuhg, hmmm ill check out those turkey bags, whats the advantage of the turkey bags say to just jars or staying in paper bags??

edit:^^ woops, i get it, after grocery bags you do turkey bags for herb that will be given away/sold and jars for your own stash... so pretty much turkey bags is just for curing large amounts... okay yeah. il just grovery bag until crisp then jar for cure. im familiar with those jars, theyre awesome, its what i use as well for curing

Baet,
I'm surprised that your buds are damp enough to stick together after 6 days hanging. Was it the dampness in the air from the recent rain? Are you talking about trimmed bud here?

gomer-i had bud hanging that hadnt been trimmed at all, the leaves dried first and thats why it is still damp. and then i had bud that was close to manicured, that was perfect to go into bags. ... so all my questions are directed to the untrimmed buds that are damp. we had thhem drying in a garage, with fans circulating air and a portable heater during the nights whhen it was rainy the first two days, the garage stayed pretty ideal compared to outside.

the reason some buds are close to manicured, and by manicure i just mean fan leaves removed and a close haircut of the bud leaves, not a full manicure, is because we had to harvest those plants in the rain when our shelter broke in the morning of the 60 mph gusts and rain... we lost nothing to mold!

You can cure right in the turkey bags. The paper bags just slow down the drying process. Jars are definitely better for curring but when you have 10 lbs of weed the turkey bags are a better option.

Nomad it sound like some of his buds have quite a bit of moisture left in them. So yes I would say openning the bag would be a good ideal until they are not squishy as he put it.

below frigid- yeah, the buds are still squishy fersure, need to dry longer, there not dry thats why i put them into paper bags and not jars, we had to emergency take them down from hanging because some one was coming to the house last weekend. i left the bags open over night last nite, il be checking on them today around noon and probably mixing em up in the bag and closing the bag for awhile.

boston after bags do you go into jars, are they done drying...?

mine are usually somewhat dry when in the bags, when i bend the stems they dont snap but they bend and split on both sides. then i like to put them in the jars after a few days in the bags. and burp the jars 15 min 2 or 3 times a day open the jar. you will get the dank smell back once they are in the jar and the longer they are in the jars the smoother the smoke and the stronger the smell. also the slower you dry the buds out the less harsh the smoke will be.

if your dont want to open the jar that many times aday i guess you could open them for an hour at a time once a day. just be careful for mold the first few weeks.
