Is civilization about to fall?

The OP needs to do some big time fact checking on that original post.

:yeahthats

But you don't have to be a ultra left hippy to understand that we're in some serous shit... It's basic economics, really. Say you live off your savings. If you use more than you get in interest, sooner or later you run out of money. It could take a really long time, but any smoker knows the stash does seem to seep away...

I highly suspect that this will be news to no-one, but hey, I'm really really stoned :abduct:

Now I started thinking about how the world would be if humans went the way of the dodo :chin: Or almost, what kind of society would we build the next time?

that's why I have a fallback position set up in the tropics. we're doubling food production there every year. top of the watershed. plenty of water.

I would have to have a pretty massive garden to feed myself and a couple others where I live, fortunately snow can be used for refrigeration during the winter, a lot of canning and drying would have to be done. There are still the issues with dwindling animal populations, and lack of fish. Will it be possible to survive without agriculture and grocery stores up here.. maybe for some.. I don't know.

I hope that before any of this happens I got a passive solar home with a really nice composting toilet and a couple wells and a couple thousand square feet in rain harvesting roof separate from the house. I got the property already so its just a matter of rebuilding a different house that actually is built for sustainability.

"up here?" I am assuming you mean norte america. my short answer is.... buwahahahaha. no. first the suburbs will have to go. the cities are iffy. depends on what distribution model they come up with to get the food to the people... of course there will be the question of "which people?"...

fuck that shit. we've got food, water, shelter, weapons and ammunition for about 3-4 households. the community has livestock, horses, fish farming and extensive agriculture. the position is defensible in that we'd just have to blow a few strategic points and post up at a few others to make the mountain inaccessible to the hordes fleeing the sub/urban zones. The local "dinamitero" is my next door neighbor. The leanest of times would still see all the bananas and oranges you could eat.

Of course, if the man decides to come and take control of the water, it will get ugly. We have very deep fallback positions and could probably eek out a living with the indigenous if necesary... who knows. But we'll be in a better position than most. The site was chosen for a "shit going down" scenario.

worry about what you are doing, not everyone else,we need to distribute the responsibility for power generation, growing food, waste reduction, and water use to the individual.Every house should be a self sufficient island, but still able to interact and contribute to the "grid".

Me and all my neighbors got 5-8 acres each at least so no suburbs and no large cities. Nice thing about the cold at least in Canada is the cold kills anything that would thrive where its very warm, I won't have to about worry hurricane season or typhoons ever, the mountains are like giant walls of protection.

Just a few examples of Democratic social change.

The first three examples were grass roots movements that metastasized into federal law. The next three were passed by federal lawmakers sympathetic to the needs of the citizenry.

Social change doesn't necessarily close the door to repercussions. Minorities suffered and to a certain degree continue to suffer even though civil rights laws were passed decades ago. The state of Oklahoma just passed a law to publish the names on the internet of every OK woman that gets an abortion.

I'm no advocate for the post, it's just a few examples. Whether you agree or disagree has little to do with policy, especially if you don't live in the states.

Some changes take decades, some only take a signature.

The real threat to civilization in the long term is overpopulation. The human race is expanding at an exponential rate. The next billion people will be added faster than the previous billion. In my lifetime we will hit 10 billion. But the ability to feed people depends on the amount of arable land and the fresh water to irrigate the crops which remains constant. Sooner or later if the trend continues, we will outstrip our ability to feed everybody.

This is why it is so essential to improve women's health services, education and birth control, in developing countries. Because the default method of birth control is death. Death by genocide, death by starvation, death by war.

It is a solvable problem. It doesn't HAVE to end badly. I really do think we can solve any problem that we create.

Now if a gigantic meteor is on collision course with earth then we are all fucked.

Of course, nothing is perfect. The point is to make progress not achieve perfection.

I agree that sometimes social change is an animal unto itself. Democratic change can only provide the push. The civil rights act didn't change peoples minds about prejudice. But it was a necessary precondition for allowing that to occur.

I also take issue with abortions promoting promiscuous behavior. Cite your sources.

We are an infestation to this planet. Until we can learn "the power of love rather then the love of power" we are doomed. Each ecosystem has a carrying capacity. We are using resources faster then we can reproduce them. Doomsday? It won't be a comet, or a flood, it will be a small group of people who "cleanse" the planet and try to start over on a better foot. Learn from the mistakes of the past. Dumb people are bredding at faster rates then smart people. Dumb people are raising dumb kids, eventually the good genes will be lost. We are doomed either way you look at it, no way should there be 7 billion people on this planet. 90% of all species that have lived on this planet are now extinct, what makes you think we are special?

My sources are simply logic... Sometimes, women who don't understand the world, will have unprotected sex and "chance it" because of things like "Emergency Contraception" (morning after pill) and Abortions... This goes through womens minds as i have seen first hand... i have a friend who got his girlfriend pregnant 2 times in their less than a year relationship, 2 abortions and countless emergency contraception... i had an ex who i have seen do this.... and i know these aren't exceptions to the rule...

Do you think if these options did not exist, there would be as many cases.... Maybe... but my opinion is that there would not be

I understand your point. I just think if you are enough of a risk taker to be promiscuous with all the STDs floating around, why would the risk of a pregnancy (if abortion were illegal) stop you?

What an awful laundry list of shit programs that are fucking up our nation. I will concede that women should be able to vote. Who said that these items were democratically imposed. Especially in regards to the health reform. The popular votes that brought the democrats into full power were all about 50/50. You have to remember though that only 30-40% of Americans vote. There is no mandate from the people for sure.

We dont live in a democratic society anyways this is a REPUBLIC.

That means rule of law (see CONSTITUTION).

In a democratic society the 51% can rule in tyranny and it just devolves into oligarchy.
