I have a good friend that Guarded a Nuclear power plant for $ 17.00 an hour, He was ex military not special forces or of a high rank. He just got the job because he needed one.
I guess the government contracts the work out and ex military is easily eligible because of a security check that has already been performed on them. Well at the end of every shift all employees have to pass through a machine that checks for radiation, if you have high levels you can't leave. He couldn't leave one day and started freaking out, so what they did was start taking off the clothes he was wearing and the level dropped enough to let him go home. He quit the next day.
Just know that it can be worse
I say if you have qualifications and technical expertise at what you do them demand to be paid a living wage. It really works if you have years with the company or city you work at
