Ok so I decided to try something new today. Just as the title explains, 2:1 Ocean Forest to CannaCoco, no perlite added.

Does anyone use this method?

The cool little guy that owns the local hydro shop told me him and a few close friends have been experimenting with it and LOVING it...so he talked me into it.,

ive always wondered about mixing soil and coco, i think it would need a good amount of perlite or coco croutons though. maybe like a bag of ocean, bag of canna 1 1/2 bags of croutons?

yes

i was doing roughly 60% happy frog to 40% coco, always used the coco from pet stores in compressed bricks with great results after a rinsing (which I'd do with any coco btw).

great results, far superior to just soil. the happyfrog has perlite mixed in, I recall adding some extra perlite as well. plants that were all coir had drainage issues.

if your a newbie to coco useing a little soil in your mix will ease u into your relationship with the medium but if u can just go straight coco youll never go back to the extra work and money for additives and mixing this n that together for less performance n more effort.

Levi, thats good to know! i've heard nothing but positive remarks about coco so we shall see.

What type of additives/nutrients should I be using with this type of setup 2:1 OF/Coco.

I planned on not feeding throughout veg, but can i add just regular nutrients to the lineup or should I worry about stuff like CalMag?

I am NEWBIE. :)

bter a mix of half coco n fox farms ocean forest sounds nice, it will definately work well for u i believe, at 50 pecent coco(my bad i meant 2;1) u shouldnt need perlite id imagine, u could check your run of ph with a very small batch on the side and see if your ph is ok, if it needs adjusting u could try lime, but heres were soil starts messing with coco, after your first month is over and your ffof has lost its nutrients youll be with half a medium that likes a lower ph and half a medium(ffof) that like a little higher ph. after one month youll be feeding as frequent as u would be with pure coco but just getting slower growth and a medium with an uncertain ph making it harder to really dial in your plant, it seems like less work useing soil but really its more, more money, more time, more effort and less results. but at 50 coco n a great soil like ffof you should be very happy with cocos contribution to an increased air to water ratio over pure soil and with it faster growth. either way your happy-

When starting with fresh off-the-shelf mix I go with 2 parts Ocean Forest and 1 part Roots Organics soilless mix. The RO stuff is basically coco/perlite but does have some goodies that supposedly allow you to grow for about 2 weeks without adding any nutes. Many use Light Warrior instead of the Roots stuff but I like the coco instead of the peat.

Hey everyone thanks for the responses!

Everything you said makes sense, and im kinda upset about the mixed PH issue, as that one is as clear as day. Hopefully I can do this run and learn more about CoCo along the way and try completely hand watered coco next run.

From my understanding coco is hard to overwater and underwater. But, I spoke to someone who uses it and he says he has to water daily cuz it dries up so fast.. So this seem accurate?

I've never run pure coco but have run Roots Organics soilless mix and they recommend watering 4X daily. I got away with watering every other day...cause it was by hand and the thought of watering $x daily by hand...well...never happened...lol.

I like the 2:1 OF to Roots soilless cause decent water retention but dries out faster than regular 'soil'...as I do not like to go too long between waterings.

Ran two cycles of 2:1 OF:B'Cuzz CC and it worked out well. Superior drainage and treated everything as I would soil. Coco seems to be a viable alternative to perlite for improved drainage and in the current round with uncut ProMix BX the grow bags can easily get waterlogged until the roots really establish themselves.

you'll get more of the benefits of coco with a 50/50 mix. better aeration.
you'll start to see yellowing early, but upping your feed can correct this.
until then you might have better luck over in the soil forum, as the majority of your mix is soil. not coco.

Word. Keep in touch, I may have some questions! :)

I tried 1:1 with canna coco and FFOF on my mothers and they seem to be doing quite well. However, I believe some strains are very sensitive to the mix. My Super Silver Haze does well in it, but my blueberry HATES it. The coco sure makes the nutes in the FOFF available.

So be careful when you're using it in young light feeding strains.
I personally would not use this mix again. I feel a touch of perlite and FOFF is already a perfect fit.
