What's new

Keep a disposable rasor for 6 months, at least

Seriously. Scrape it forwards and backwards ten to twenty times on a pair of jeans and it'll resharpen almost like brand new for a minimum of six months.

I just learned this from a redneck friend, and in my awfully twisted and sad little brain, found it exciting.

Little things add up.

Wow, no that really is exciting man. Thanks for the tip! I have used the mach 3 for a while but I'm going to try this and tell my friends. Hell it's exciting if you just think about how much metal, plastic, and transportation costs would be saved if this works and people do it!

ever see a chef using a steel to "sharpen" a knife? In reality, he is just straightening out the edge. Sharpening is done with a stone and isn't done nearly as often as the other which is done over and over while slicing.

Anyhow... same concept. They used to sell a kind of stone for doing this to face razors on television... infomercial style.

K+ for any idea that cuts down on consumption...

What you're referring to is "stropping". You're using cloth or leather to help straiten out the edge of the razor or knife. There are a ton of youtube videos showing exactly how to do it. It'll dramatically extend the life of a sharpening when combined with occasional steel use.

no way in hell id even try. If my razor is used more than once I get BAD razor burn. Other than that, smooth as a baby's butt. I bic my butt too, just fyi :)

I'm sticking to my Phillips electric shaver at the moment, but thanks for the tip! I'll bear it in mind if I ever go back to the blade.

How the hell you gonna scrape a disposable both forwards and backwards? Backwards, the same direction you pull the razor to do its job, would cut into your jeans, and would seemingly be shaving off part of your pants...

Or is my thinking off on this?

Well now that's just embarrassing.

You know what I mean, though.

I dry shave with a cut throat. It cost a fortune to buy but will last forever and never run out. sharpens up lovely on jeans, leather and whet stones in a pinch. Doubles up lovely as a scalpel too.

us sensitive skin people think youre crazy for dry shaving

Most people with sensitive skin have the reaction because of the Razor they use. Using a cut throat may sound harsh but it's actually far better than using a disposable IMHO. I always find the hair, dirt and sebum get trapped in the thin blades and this causes the scrapes and cuts etc. A single sharp blade makes much less mess and gives a cleaner cut IMHO. I'd recommend you try it with some King of shaves type oil to see how you get on but i've converted quite a few people from disposables, often due to reactions from shaving. Steer clear of anything fancy, expensive or containing a designer name. Shaving is simply about oil or soap and a sharp blade, anything else is surplus.
