Heat Issues!!!! Light & Ventilation???????

Heres the deal, I just setup a grow cab 40w x 40d x 72h a 400w Hps and a 265cfm squirrel cage/with a carbon scrubber for smell. This is a garage grow so what ever the temps are outside its 10 degrees higher in the cab. Its ok now that the temps here are around 55 to 65 degrees, but when summer hits i want to try a grow. 1st question is the 400w hps im running is a older model sun system the cord going into the ballast from the light is attached internal and do not plug in like most newer model light system. I was leaning towards a cool tube, but wanted to DIY a cool tube and keep existing system if possible? or would it be a good idea to buy a complete 400w cool tube system and add a another fan for the lights. In the past growing in the summer was not a problem the temps sometimes got high as 85 to 90 degrees during the day, but did not stress the plants none. The place have enough cracks and holes to get a decent draft going with ventilations, but is totally different inside a cab. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. oleschool

Plants are able to absorb more light at higher temps, with HID systems optimal temperatures are 80-86f that is without CO2 enrichment. I am going to home depot today to get one of those 6inch inline fans that go are made for ducting. I am using a 12volt fan as my inline fan, and do not have a squirrel cage fan. My temps are rising slowly, waiting on the stanley blower grrr

Yes i saw that inline fan, but think i'll need something with more power for the lights. Looking at my existing 400w hps earlier and saw it had this junction box thingy in the rear of the reflector, its to big to insert in a tube and do a DIY. Anybody know of a good but cheap place to purchase a 400w hps cooltube system complete. Grow cabs are cool you can max out lights and control everything, but without proper ventilation you'll be toast. Thanks oleschool

I am working on my growroom and I have an aircooled hood for my 250W/400W....my question is will two 75cfm fans (one pulling one pushing) air from outside be enough to keep it cool. Would you guys recommend the 250W over the 400W for heat issues the cab is going to be about 55"x24"x36" (HxDxW)

Hey thanks freezerboy, looks like i'll be purchasing a cooltube and wiring it to my existing ballast. I was told the 265cfm squirrel cage would be more than enough for the scrubber, light & the cab. Cabs are the way to go my space is tight 40"w x 40"d x 72"h the 400w hps is being max out with 9 4 gallon square DWC buckets. Im curious to see what this grow yields. oleschool

thats crazy i use 1700ppm co2 and barly do 80 its all my plants can take without curling there leafs cuz of the heat. I wish i had a sativa strain tht was good for heat i grow kush and alwase have heat issues and i use a AC unit with air cooled lights.

hey globel ya say your kush cant take 80 degrees barely ya need a more sativa your doing something else wrong your kush should be loving 80 degrees. i have bubba kush hybrid abussive og hybrid GDP urkel hybrid and none curl in 82 now because of winter got 100 last summer

urkel x strawberry desiel under 1k no a/c no C02 temps got 100 and she still purpled and rock hard nugs.

just before lights on tonight theres lavender sugar shack memoryloss [urkel x strawberry desiel] {fast veg urkel pheno} decapation {bubba x whitemustang} GDP super g { TRCs Gold Monkey(Santa Marta Gold x Blockhead) x Love Potion}
evenflow {abussive og x whitemustang} all 29 days 12/12 under 400w mh 400w hps. i run a 4inch carbon scrubber this 1 http://www.nationalgardenwholesale....E_FILTERS&title=Air Purification&type=product ran to a 4 inch Y flange then a sun systems air cooled hood and a cool tube then into another Y into a stanely blower fan exhausted into attick. heres how to mod the stanely blower fan it costs 40$ for the fan approx 20 more for other misc supplys http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=29341. i ran a cab in 06 part of 07 the stanely pulls air through the scrubber into through both lights and out into attick i have 2 - 3 inch passive air intakes. fans inside and scrubber run 24 hrs a day 7 days a wk never shut down or you would smell my grow way down the street. i grow in soil ive flowered in everything from 1/2 cup to 11 gal i done a bonsai in 1/2 cup lol got 1/8 from her and 2 plants in 22 gal rubbermaid lmao. i prefer 2 liter soda bottels and 1 gal grow bags heres a link to the 400w club there hella good setups in there http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=21967 this thread is the hottest on ICmag i live in the mohave desert under a huge shade rock lol and know all about heat 80 is perfect

This is a very good thread..and si the FIRST where Iv seen reccomened temps for HID'z to be 80-86f WITHOUT co2..is this true..I know plants absorb more light at higher temps..I ask because I currently have a 400 hps closet grow..and its summer..hot,and temps go from 86-90f at seedlings level..

the seedlings are PPP and Satori..both are stiva dom and the Satori is especially known for being heat resistant..I ened help on this matter..are my temps ok..even for seedlings..

They're higher than optimum but, as long as lamp is far enough away to avoid infared burn, you should be OK. I just finished a garage cab grow of 12 weeks or so. Cab temps in the 90-100+ range, DWC temps in the 80s. No rot, no algae, no problems of any kind.

Thanks FreezerBoy..can you please give me detail on this grow..

1.where the temps ALWAYZ 90-100+..during the seedling, veg and flower temps?...

2.did you notice any negative effect such as strectching, slow growth,or heat stress...ESPECIALLY during the seedling or young veg stage?

3.What was the highest the temps got to..and did this stress the plant or stall them in any way

4.what srain was it..indica or sativa dom..as I understand, sativas resist ehat better than indicas, which were predominantly grown over centuries in cool, dry climates,as opposed to sativas which like hot, humid, tropical enviroments..

3.

Sorry but, I have few details to provide. Since coming to IC, I no longer need to grow in summer. Conventional wisdom said my garage was too hot but, I was bored so, I grew anyway, and decided to do it all "wrong" out of curiosity just to see what would happen. I kept no journal, took no EC readings and ran everything from pH numbers I kept in my head. Twice I found res temps over 85º and did the ice bottle thing.

I can say that, right now, at 10 PM (1 hour past "sunrise") my cab is 86º at the intake, 93º at the canopy (which is low now, over new plants) with DWC at 80º. NOTE this is NOT a recommendation! I was simply that bored and curious.

The plant in question was Mandala 8 Mile High, a sat/ind mix with heavy indica leanings physically (fat leaves, celery like stalk, dense buds) This one is a little fluffier than the one I harvested in April. It made a sad attempt at forming foxtails the previous plant didn't have (just a few, little, tiny ones.) One strange thing was a single cola decided it didn't want to grow towards the light anymore and did a U turn to grow downwards. Never seen that one before.

While there is definitely a slight loss of yield, if summer growing is the difference between weed and no weed, grow in the summer.
