Eye Hortilux Vs. Regular HPS bulb

J

JackTheGrower

When I first received my ballast + hood 1k it came with a HPS bulb..

While the nakkid bulb was great once the glass was on the hood it wasn't..

I switched to the hortilux eye and I feel I got more out of that bulb through the glass.

So I believe they do a better job through glass like the cool tubes I am using now.

It's a lot of money for a bulb for sure.. Maybe too much for what we get; I understand that..

I'd like to think the quality is as good as I can get since I only grow a medical supply and it is as much an activity as a restocking.
Now if I was to run multi-lights then Hortilux would be low on the list for the cost.

I will say that when I fired up the Horitlux for the first time I could tell the difference..

All on a iron core ballast.. I don't know about a electronic/digital. I'd love to try one for the 1k.. I have a twin electronic 250 ballast and I can tell you I am very happy with how it runs those two 250 MH's I can also run 250 HPS's if I want.. I'd like to think I would be very happy with an electronic 1k

Curious as to how you "compared" all those digi ballasts?

I actually had the privledge to see them each hooked up to this large box (was a tad smaller then a suitcase..not sure what the guy called it) which was then hooked to a laptop. It was measuring incoming power, watts to lamp, and a bunch of other complicated looking stuff.

It seemed pretty convincing, but I cant say it wasnt biased.

I have experienced a noticable visual flicker with elux, futurebrite, nextgen, and galaxy (best seen when looking at the light against a nearby wall). The lumatek was the only electronic ballast that didnt cast the flicker.

Note - I have no experience with Quantums..but hear they are quality.

Hortilux Vs. Regular....

Sorry guys I saw this thread and had to respond, I have done side by side comparisons on these bulbs and the clear winner is Hortilux, the growth of the plants under the Hortilux was amazing compared to the regular bulb I had, when it comes to ballast I have always used analog ballast, I would like to switch to digis...

Everyones opinion on bulbs is based on "feelings". I don't know of a single side by side ever having been done on either ICMAG or Overgrow. Those who have been so brave as to try using the cheap bulbs claim no difference, but who knows? The only thing we know for sure is that any possible difference is small.

All bulbs are rated in "initial lumens". That is what they output when brand new. That number falls off fast. I wonder if it is better to use a $100 plant bulb for a year or 5 $20 bulbs for a year?

1 bulb for a year:yoinks:
I change mine out every 2 harvests ('bout 120-150 days total).

Thanks for clearing that up cheeb. I've seen similar tests but never really bothered to stop and see how exactly it was done. Gonna keep my eyes peeled next time the indoor expo comes around.

i have never done a side by side comparison but i grow large plants with 1k hortilux hps in cooltubes hung vertically between them. i used to run standard phillips and sylvania hps bulbs in the same setup. what i have done is keep production records for the last several years and they clearly indicate an increase in individual plant yield with the hortilux of an average of 1 1/2 oz per.i should add that i also veg with 1k hortilux hps as i believe it trains the plant to the light from a shape and structure standpoint.later

BLINDDATE,

These are pictures of mostly the same strains in the same closet, at the same time, under 2 600 watt lights(btw, the same dual-600 ballast)... Clearly, BLINDDATE you can see the plants on the left are bigger and more vigorous under the Hortilux, and the plain GE 600 bulb gives no extra incentives....

These ain't my feelings...

CARRY ON.

BTW, this is just day 5 under flower...

Ive found that Hortilux bulbs throw better spectrum but burn out MUCH faster than other bulbs Ive used. Ive watched the color of Hortilux bulbs change during grows. They turn white and weak.

Im a fan of SolarMax for HPS.

So are you saying that in the same grow you are using a Hort on one side and the GE on the other? Or, is that a picture of two different grows using "MOSTLY" the same strains?

I am not saying there isn't an advantage nor have I ever used the cheap bulbs either (and I have to replace 20 of them each time). What I'm saying is that there is no tested proof.

To add, I saw your post, they are all confrontational... What do you do here? Are you just debating? GET A LIFE!

I disagree. I think that all of my posts have something to contribute. I also have considerable experience. The weight of your experience can be summarized by your own word, "closet".

LMAO, Son, do you know who I am? Closet Grower? I am trying out a strain and don't have room for it. I am not a closet grower... WoW. Your ignorance is at an all time high!

OK, I give up. Who are you?

not trying to feed a war, but experience has nothing to do with how many lights one runs..or chooses to display on the internet for that matter.

I've seen 20+ light runs with no experience - some are decent / others show that lack of experience.

I've seen dialed in closet grows which'll put even the most experienced toker to bed.

Experience is related to time dealt with something (hands on) not necessarily how many lights hung while starting up. I've seen numerous few light growers come with higher quailty and yeild then 20+ light "experienced" light hangers.

lmao - its amazing the number of folks on here who hold themselves in higher standard based on how posts they have..or in other words..how long they hang onto a username. I've seen many a handle go from nice contributors into arrogant a-holes as they become established in the community. Their snobbery is thick.

BLIND, not necessarily talking abou you. You've made many great contributions to this site - and continue to do so.. but can see how many of your posts come off as confrontational.

I have not tried hortilux, because I am too damn cheap. I get great results with two blooms and out as a bulb policy, and I am thinking about going to new bulbs every bloom, that first grow on a new bulb is always best for me.

if I can advise, try at least one Hortilux and 1 of something else (over time), chances are both will be good but you will see the advantages in growth between the two. Some throw more of a blue spectrum that assist in tighter nodes and full bud structure, others may throw more red, which may create more stretch and so on... If you ever notice Hortilux bulbs are blue when they are turned on....

Folks, give Osram Plantastars a looksie. Made in Germany, engineered SPECIFICALLY for growing plants. I just fired up 3 of em, and put in a regular hps just for shits and giggles: BIG difference, in both intensity and spectrum (and that was just to my naked eye...I'm sure the plants love it!) I'll never use anything else as far as non-reflectorized bulbs go (I use Gavita bulbs also, in a different setup, very nice bulbs as well, the Russian version of NASA's best and brightest minds worked on the Gavita bulbs after the Iron Curtain collapsed)

reflectorized 600w Agromax, 95000 lum. and no hood required. runs so much cooler than a standard hps. I have it in a hood because I need a cord set, soon. That is the brightest damn lamp I have seen. uniform footprint. I think it would be better for someone with a space that is wider in one direction. But well worth it at $50 on ebay

I just found these generic HPS for $150 for 6 1k bulbs on-line... I'll run it side by side with my brand new hortilux and see what happens. If I can't see a difference, the hortilux is gone. I'm still really want to try their dual-spectrum 1k... $200+ though.

Yeah, I bought the brand name Gavitas the first time around, after I bought a few of those Agromax's, never went back. Forgot to add that to the post. Worth every penny too...

Agromax huh, okay... I'll take a crack at them.... VERTICALLY.
