How Many Growers Are There?

Just wondering if there are any statistics on how many small hobby growers there are in the US. Based on the activity at this site and the number of seed vendors, I'd guess it's a pretty big number. Probably a number that would surprise most people.

But I don't see that information anywhere. Probably not a question that appears on most surveys. And not one most growers would probably answer truthfully. If only one in 10 smokers grew some of their own, that would be over a million small growers in the U.S. alone. Cool!

Anybody know how many seeds are sold annually by big vendors like Seedbay or Seed Bootique? Is it in the thousands, or millions, or 10s of millions? That might give a more accurate picture of how many people are actively involved in the hobby.

I walk into one of the three hydro shops in my city and see hundreds of gallons of nutes and dozens of lights and hoods ready for purchase. Then I see the various tattoo places and smoke shops that all have hundreds of pipes and bongs for sale. Then I think funny I'm the only one who likes this stuff. Peace

I would have thought more like 5/8 million regular smokers.

I also thought that!! I would say there's roughly 100 million cannabis users worldwide....I hope it's much more though.

Sounds like a good starting estimate.

I would like to know how many catalogs are printed each year by Hydrofarm and Sunlight Supply for hydro shop distribution. That's one of those starting point numbers.

My city, in Ontario, less than 500,000 population - leo gave out estimate that there were 500 grow houses in the area.

1 for a thousand residents.

I knew of 3 in 1 block (not my neighbourhood). I had one 3 houses down from me when I was growin, my next door neighbour was growin.

Lots and lots - mostly small personal or small $ grows...

Another way to extrapolate an estimate of growers is to take a sample of growers (say 500) and each grower quantifies the number of smokers s/he knows. Then subtract from that number any smokers they know that also grow. Then take the average of this number from the 500 grower sample. It won't be exact and the variance is probably fairly high, but it would be another starting number, which could be used in comparison or conjunction with other sample groups and statistics. Someone better acquainted with statistics could certainly draw up a better formula, but I would be curious what the smoker to grower ratio is.

Used to be every kid over 15 had a patch or two, but sadly with crank being the thang now a days, not as much being grown.

I'd say I know 100 people who smoke, and maybe 10 grow.

laced bud that ages you 9 years when smoked.
Here in Cambodia 3 out of all the people i know grow.
In Switzerland I knew hundreds of people smoking with 4 growing.

I'm gonna guess about 1 out of every 1000 smokers grow.
I really feel that if we could know the real number, we would be shocked. Of domestic production I think 5% of growers produce more than 75% of the weed grown. I think in the weed game it's like 20 plants or 500+ plants.

The number is much smaller than we think. Remember the HUGE amount of money that weed only makes dealers(not going into coke or crack or H)... Kinda hard to make that much though if there's a ton of growers, eh?

i know tons of ppl who smoke but only one who grows.
most ppl just cant be bothered with it.

then again my small ass town with population ~100.000 has 2 growshops, so there must be quite some clientele.

of course, the number of growers will rise and fall as you look at different cities/states/countries...the more oppresive the place, the fewer grows you'll find...I suspect that in Cali, ~60% of the population grows =P

In a time before I knew anything about HPS/MH, NPK ratios or pH, I was taught by a fellow toker how to plant a cannabis seed...I was amazed that i could actually grow marijuana from the very seeds that I had been tossing out for years....I payed it forward and taught a couple of my friends what I had learned...and they were mezmerized by the idea of being able to grow your own...I've lost contact with them, but i'm pretty sure they have a couple of plants in backyard or something...if not a proper grow.

I'm sure that as prohibition continues to fade, we'll see more and more growers...especially personal grows.
