hehe thanks, I love telling that story. Everything in it is true except for the hitchhiker part.

On a side note, I've hitched hiked tons of times but not in the USA. Never had any trouble from anyone but I wouldn't try it here in the US.

Things have changed; only rarely do I see a hitchhiker these days. I have picked up mostly students and military guys. Never had any problems with hitchers. Some of the military guys (Navy/AF enlisted) gave me a little free grass or acid in return for the ride, before the drug war and the testing began.

I used to hitchhike routinely when I was in college without a car, including several long-distance trips halfway across the US. Never had problems other than a couple of close encounters with LEO, and I met a lot of strange and interesting people along the way. Just lucky I guess.

I had great times hitching in the early 70's, met a lot of nice people and a few crazies. You have to use discression these days, I have not seen one in a long time.

Well, in the usa, I think I would have my doubts myself, but I come from small city in Canada

Hehehehe...dude, you need to wisen up man. This happened in Canada last year, and this guy could easily been trying to get around by thumb rather than bus:

Regarding the picking up of hitchers....not since I got enough life experience to realize you really can't judge a book by its cover. Lots of imbalanced and downright crazy people out there. Better chance you find these types unable to afford their own transportation and having to resort to hitchhiking.

I realize it is a generalization, and I try to avoid engaging in generalizations while leading my life, but there is too much downside to letting a complete stranger into the close confines of an automobile with you.

I guess you are trying to tell me to be safe, in a hard way, that story is scary

Now, I was a freshman at university...immagine a strange human being, that looks like a big woman and talks like a man and keeps looking you like hannibal lecter would (with a psycho smile) and is pointing at you something in his bag. And moreover you are driving on a secondary road through fields of corn at night. I was fuc*in scared . The sucker could have killed us both...If I knew that he had only a butterfly knife I would smashed his head on the dashboard when he started behaving like a psycho. But we thought he had a gun.

but how did you lose 2 years of your life ?

Iron Lion : Sorry, I can't read your messages, :)

My oldest brother was killed by two hitchhikers in Miami, 1955. He had graduated from college, served in the Army; and was becoming a pilot for Eastern Airlines. He was 25 and wouldn't hurt a fly.

i dont usually, but did pick up a hippy dreaddy couple on the way to alaska once,

they were standing under the 'no hithhikers' sign in whitehorse bc.

we had a van and room so said fuk it,

they were cool...only wanted to go like 50 miles, and almost instantly talking about the QP of "hydro" they had and if we wanted any?

we smoked w/ 'em when they got off but couldnt keep none cuz we were crossing into alaska same day.

I have a few times, mainly cuz i know what its like.
i walked 3 hours from isle of palms (rich ass snobs) SC, to mount pleasant before i was picked up one time.
hell even a few months back i found myself in a bind, was hitch hiking and the only person that acknowledged me was a state trooper - to my surprise he didn't arrest me for walking half drunk in the middle of a highway intersection hitchhiking at 230 am. alls he asked was if i knew that person in the black mustang, then took off like a bitch. didnt even have the nerve to ask if i needed a ride. to protect and serve i thought!! that rat bastard

i grew up in a small town and gave some ppl a ride there. some kid who wanted a ride to a party and some other guy who would be hitchhiking every other day between two towns.

i have hitchiked only once when i walked home from a party piss drunk. it was a loooong walk and no fucking car would pick me up. eventually a cab stopped next to me and dropped a guy off, i just got in the car and said "thats so nice you pick me up i got no money lol". the guy was just like get the fuck outta here. i was pissed!
but eventually some friendly cab guy gave me a ride for free when i was only 1-2 miles away from my home.

fuck yeah....anybody that has spent time near the Appalachian trail...you should feel pretty comfortable picking up a hitchhiker with a pack. or a beard. if they smell really bad when you get near em, they are probably safe.

Hey Sack, jus think how quick she -could- get a ride dressed like that. I reckon a feller would prolly even go outta his way for her, huh? lol!

I've given many folks a ride over the years, if I can help some one out, I usually do.... BC
