I can't tell you how many times I've watched Alone In the Wilderness, such an amazing movie. Since the first time I've seen it I've wanted nothing more to do something even half as amazing as that. If you haven't seen it, buy the DVD, or try to rent it somehow. It'll be worth it, I promise. After seeing that clip I think I'm going to pop in the movie, thanks for the reminder.:joint:

If a 51 year old could do it, why not you or me? My dream, and I plan on living it, sooner or later. (Sooner would be preferable.)

anyways, there was a crew member whose body was never even discovered because he lost his footing in fell into a endless void in a glacier.. i'm sure a quick search of google could find something about it. Whenever i was watching his show it had a quick mention about the fellows death

Actually during that episode Bear was telling a story about a man that was part of a group he was in while climbing glaciers, not sure how you got the idea that it was a member or his crew. I personally find the idea of endangering other people while making a survival show laughable at best.

Survivor Man should be called
"Lost Camera man who complains that he has to do all his own filming and that doing so takes up most of his energy"

bighogg

i agree, i think he is trying

when Bear jumped into the freezing cold water in this Siberian episode, and swam underneath the ice... i have to admit, i was impressed. no way i could ever do that. no way. the cold alone can put most people into instant shock.

i'm sure there was an emergency crew there and all..., but still, it would be a small crew at best, AND in Siberia.

I like the one where Bear, lol,is saying hes climbing a certain mountain, but in the background you can see things/landmarks that show he wasnt even there, then tryed to explain it was for dramatic effect when it was questioned on the Net.I wouldnt waste a second of my time watching that liar with 50 guys carrying his lunch and cameras.Id rather hear Les whine about really doing what he shows, than watch that other guy run like a girl in a scary movie and fall down five times, wicked flamin, lol. He always runs fullblast(thats helpful, tip wise, lol, matter of fact its downright wrong) to where hes going even in the freezing winter and works up these big ass sweats, come on,lol. But then goes into the Hotel, takes a shower, eats Lobster comes out the next morning and rubs dirt on himself to make it look like he did something.

I'm a major Survivorman fan, when Bear Grylls came on TV I was so scared they were going to replace the hardy Canadian(Les Stroud) with this pussy that has camera crews following him around.

One thing I have noticed is that Bear seems to find a reason to drink his piss in every other episode, it gained him the reputation in my house of being the "Piss man". In my whole life of survival study, everything I have read says to not drink your urine, its actually likely to dehydrate you further. The only thing I can figure is that Bear likes the taste of his own brand, or else its just a gimmick to get viewer shock ratings.
I was proud to see Les Stroud build a solar still to distill the clean water from his urine, it affirmed my greater respect for his show.

Don't get me wrong, I'll watch a Man vs. Wild episode once or twice, but not 3-6 times like I will a Survivor man episode, its all better than most cable TV shows.

My dad was telling me about that "Alone in the wilderness" guy, I am sure it is a movie I'd like to see, I told him I'd try to find a copy on DVD somewhere if I can.

You guys have the wrong perception, you're missing the point of both shows. Its about survival, you guys keep thinking "surviving in the wild".....take a step back do a bong hit, this may hit you hard and really blow your mind. You need $ to survive in todays world, not those skills.
Eskimos
Inutes
North American Indians
Aussie Bush Men
list off whoever you want, they didn't and can't do what these guys did. GET PAID FOR DOING IT. These guys are both true suvivors.
Good publicity, bad publicity, it doesn't matter, attention gets viewers. Baer got cought at a hotel, people blasted it all over the internet......and more viewers tuned in the next week, his ratings went up and so did his income.

Welcome to todays world. Get a real perspective on it.

Many of those people you listed now work as guides for outsiders in their native lands, and make $ doing it........

The Canadian Government funds many of their far north natives to act as scouts to patrol the northern passages that may now become nearly regularly passable, so that Canada can maintain their claim over them.

It's fun to stir the pot sometimes and hit things from a different point of view.

LOL, you're seriously trying to sell that BACKCOUNTRY? Your'e comparing some guides' salary to theirs....... I know a guy that was a guide in UT, his best year I think he was happy that he broke $20K....working 3 jobs and living out of a dodge caravan. On a salary like that you better know some "survivial techniques". I highly doubt that Les or Baer will need resort to being guides to make ends meet after their shows are over. What are they in, thier 2nd or 3rd season with big ratings, I'm guessing they are in the salary range of $200K plus PER EPISODE. In addition to that, they Les is doing commericials and getting paid again. Do you think the Canadian Government pays those kind of wages?

Really, if you want to compare what I'm saying, be able to back it up with something reasonable. Baer says he "summited Everest".....so have a lot of Sherpa's, but they don't make anywhere near the money that he does and they don't have their own television show! That dude isn't drinking his own piss for nothing, it's for RATINGS so he MAKES MORE MONEY and GETS ANOTHER SEASON.

Some people know what it takes to survive while others know what it takes to excel.
Again, welcome to the real world.

Man, you must be really bored?? Looking around for people to argue with and put down, its OK, everyone needs to find something to be entertained about, my personal preference is watching "educational" TV, and then bitching about it.

Arguing percieved politics got old for me along time ago.

Have a great day!

Hey Bro,i would love to see the Documentary. But as far as on TV and between them two,its not close,Les is the Man compared to Bear. The shit Les does is cool, and the way he is deff by himself,i like it.If he was lieing i would never watch him again either, but what he says hes doing, hes doing. It might not be the ultimate survival show, but its the best one on TV.But i like the hardcore dudes the best like yer saying.Bear is like a girlscout though, imo.

LOL, he GAINED more viewers then he lost because of it. His ratings have never been higher, the show continues to gain in popularity and viewers. Lose a few, gain thousands, there is'nt a television show out there that doesn't want that. It's business, it's money, it has nothing to do with morals or values.....and that's just the way the world works today. I'm not saying I like it or that I agree with it but, that's the truth of the matter. :fsu:

You can compare anyone you want but, show me someone doing what they are and make somewhere close to the money they do. YUKON shows a ton of respect for the people in Alaska, I think he's right, some of those natives live that way everyday but, not one of them figured out to toss a camera in with them and make a show about it....they live that way because most of them have to. Same goes for all of those guides you see walking Les around forthea week before he goes out showing him what he needs to know. I've seen some of them that don't have shoes and most likely, haven't ever used a tooth brush. Yet here comes Les to camp out for a week and make more then all of them put together in a years time. Yeah, they got the "survival" portion down but most of the world has progressed waaaayyy beyond just "surviving" through life.

On the other hand, have you ever seen the show "living with the Kombi" (not sure of the spelling), even the 2 guys there kept saying they were lazy and all they ever did was the bare minimum to live. The rest of the time they laid around.

So if I have a different opinion or perception then yours, I'm arguing? I think your a little sensitive. Sorry man, really I no intentions of hurting your feelings. Oh wait, isn't that's what forums is for, it to DISCUSS DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW, mine isn't the same as your's, don't loose sleep over it.

man fuck this guy..i'm sick of him stomping through the wilderness and killing everything he comes across. i've been watching for like 10 minutes and already he has killed a snake with his teeth and put his knife through an alligators head.

it would be different if he were actually out in the wilderness with no assistance for awhile like survivor man does. this guy is like a bully making his way through the wilderness and biting off heads.

Ray Mears

Ray Mears is in it for real. It is easy to see that he really cares about what he is trying to do. His meetings with the Hadza tribe had a visible impact on him. I'm pretty sure he has worked with, or been approached by the UK special forces to train the soldiers. He goes out with the regular troops all the time. He knows how to light fire like no one else on the planet. Cool geezer. Well worth watching all his stuff. Reckon iPlayer has a few of them!

Bear Grylls is more about macho endurance bollox. He got his TV break doing some imitation of the Foreign Legion basic training in Africa. He has a military background and it looks like he scrapes by with that on his sojourns into the woods. He is always pretty close to civilization. That Ray Mears goes out there to live. No tarmac for hundreds of miles. Grylls has about 5 miles of Mangroves and he's sticking his thumb out on a busy road.
