What is everyone's preferred nutrients for soil?

F

FunkDoctor

either organic or close to organic

I have had good luck with Fox Farm, but want to move away from the ammomium nitrates. It's almost too strong N wise also! Good stuff though none the less if you use it correctly

What's everyone's favorite? I have been considering:

-Humboldt nutrients
-Pure Blend Pro Bloom/Veg
-Advanced Nutrients (is it for soil too?)
-Guano teas (but are these complete or do you have to supplment for K and micros??)

I've had good results with PBP. Lately I've been using Fox Farm because it's more readily available to me and I wanted to try something 'new'. So far so good...I can see what you mean about the N though.

so PBP veg and bloom? do you mean you have to add Meta K to PBP or were you suggesting MetaK and AN Bud Candy? (not familiar with bud candy..)

What kind of soil mix do you have? I personally like the Botanicare line of product, but I've recently decided to go without any additive nutrient at all. All it takes is a good soil mix to start with.

Here is my recipe:

5kg coir bail.
1 bag happy frog potting soil (2cu.ft I think?)
1 bag foxfarm planting mix (made of earthworm casting + bat guano)
2 cups of pulverized dolomite lime stone to stabilize the pH
1 tbs of mychorrizae granules

Coir is an excellent and cheap alternative to perlite.
The foxfarm planting mix is a simpler alternative to your usual soil amendment like blood, bone meals or kelp food.

With properly amended soil, aerated compost teas, and perhaps some kelp/guano is all you need.

In true organics you feed the soil (or rather the "micro-heard"), and use teas to boost the population in your soil. Microbes are responsible for converting organic nutrients, which are not available to the plants, into inorganic nutrients that plants can use.

These two threads should get you started. Follow Burn 1's advice - stick to the recipes and keep it simple, and it's hard to go wrong.

Neongreen FTW. I would recommend three back-to-back articles I just noticed in the latest Urban Garden mag also. Two are online:

Pimp Your Soil
http://www.urbangardenmagazine.com/index.php?id=217

Staying Alive: Maximizing the Effectiveness of Your Beneficial Biology
http://www.urbangardenmagazine.com/index.php?id=216

The third was stellar, it's called The Living Soil, and it described in detail the role of nematodes, arthropods, protozoa and bacteria in soil, and how to engineer compost teas. The text is at http://www.simplici-tea.com/thelivingsoil.htm but the illustrations in the mag are cool too.

Cheers dev0n, Will check those in a bit.

Why don't you post a separate thread over on the organics forum so more people notice them?

I only use bloom ferts and just let vegging plants veg. I use MG bloom booster 10-52-10. Since I have been unable to find it, I now have Shultz bloom at 15-55-15. I use a weak solution 3-4 times in 60 days. I get good results, and tend to grow more plants at a lower yield. It's not the fertilizer's fault for the low yield, it's my 30 day veg time and small 2 liter pots.

AN...

AN...

I've been using AN for about the last 5 years. Started in Hydro, had great results. Now I do soil and have very good results also. I use the 2 part Sensi grow and bloom. I supplement in Grow with VHO, and Voodoo Juice, and in bloom with Big Bud, Carbo Load, and Overdrive. Pretty much following the prescribed doses on the bottles, but I don't feed at every watering.

Good luck on your grow.

My Ferts

I use PSG in veg and JBG in flower. With a bit of blackstrap molasses. Works well for me. Oh yeah, supertrive now and then when transplanting, ect. I try to as organic as possible but I have hit my grow with chemical ferts to get a quick fix. Not every grow by no means. :smoke:
