New To Growing In an Ikea Closet

I previously created this thread in the JOURNAL section of the forum, but you could not subscribe. I've created this one so you could readily find and comment and offer suggestions. PLEASE!

This is my second attempt at growing. My first attempt I was going to use a single Waterfarm using a feminized Lowryder#2. That grow ended due heat issues and my inexperience. In addition, the Waterfarm was too much work for a neophyte

Since, I am growing three Joint Doctor's Lowryder#2 seeds I decided to use his Guide here http://www.cannabishq.com/forum/index.php?topic=2506.msg43655

or for organic freaks, just plant into organic soil mix with bat guano mixed in... and put away the calculator.
SOIL

For soil I am using rebo's recipe of 3 parts Fox Farms Ocean Forest, 2 parts Fox Farms Light Warrior, 1 Part perlite, and 1/2 part worm castings.

FYI Mandalaseeds.com soil GUIDE:http://www.mandalaseeds.com/html/soil_guide.html

The 3 pots are 3.54QT/ 3.35 L in size

Germination:

Germination is in ROCKWOOL soaked in 5.5 pH water inserted in a plastic container inside a card board box and sitting on top of my router.
This method worked the two previous times, so why mess with it.

FYI Mandalaseeds.com Planting Seeds and Germination http://www.mandalaseeds.com/html/germination.html

My Cabinet is an Ikea closet whose outside dimensions are 52.25" H x 23.5" W x 16 .5" D.

The Fan ( 172 cfm) and Carbon filter are from HGTSUPPY.com

I will be using a 150 w HPS 6" CoolTube < fixture also fromHGTSUPPLY.com Ventilation consists of a Single 8" x 8" Darkroom Vent on the right side, a 4" filtered hole on the back panel and several holes combined to run wires on the left side.

Water will be GLACIER RO water from PUBLIX supermarket.

All suggestions and questions will be welcomed!

Here are pictures so far:

Two of three have cracked I will keep them in the container until roots start to appear from the bottom.
I will transfer to a taller container if seeds quickly out grow this one. I will spray/moisten as needed.

Waiting the arrival of portable air conditioner on June 23. Cab temp to high even under fluoro.

LowRyder#2 Feeding Schedule?

LowRyder#2 Feeding Schedule?

Foxfarm Ocean Forest contains earthworm castings and bat guano in it ingredients label.

I thought this meant that I did not have to do anything special other than water.

I was thinking of measuring the run-off when I water. Otherwise I was not going to feed. Just let it use all the nutes in the Ocean Forest mix. Perhaps a diluted nute mixture towards week 4 or 5 or 6 ( I am not sure when to start). Either Lucas recipe GH Micro and GH Bloom or Lucas recipe using Flora Nova Bloom. Perhaps not even flush the last week per LUCAS's write up.

In addition, I have GREAT WHITE (Mycorrhizae) that I was going to use a diluted mixture of 1/2 scoop in 1 gallon of water and then feed 3oz to each plant container. The label recipe calls for 1 scoop/2 gallons feed 3 oz into 4 inch conatiner every 2-3 weeks

Any suggestions? Please!

3 girls have popped

3 girls have popped

Checked on the girls this morning -one has started to take off had to switch to taller container.

The tall girl had a taproot growing out the side of of Rockwool. Cannot yet transer to soil since my air conditioner has not arrived.

As a test I watered the soil yesterday checked today and two of the pots are moisten perfectly the third dried out. Perhap due to fan being to close or near an in take vent or both.

Had an idea, going to Home Depot to purchase a wire shelf to install a foot from the base of the closet just to get the girls closer to the light. Possibly could be use as a scrog screen? Will see.

Good to see you got a regular thread.

you shouldn't need to feed them any nutes for atleast 2 weeks.
Wait till they show signs of needing nutes ( slight yellowing )

I'll be following.

My soil mix is about 3 parts Fox Farms Ocean Forest, 2 parts Fox Farms Light Warrior, 1 Part perlite, and 1/2 part worm castings. Nothing scientific or anything I just wanted good drainage and something with good nutrients already in it.

I can finish these in these 1 gallon pots but I will need to feed them before they finish. Right now I haven't even watered them since potting a few days ago, and it looks like they won't need watering for a while yet.. At this stage it is very important to not overwater, and these baby's are still wet. I knew when I potted them that I didn't let the water drain out enough from the first 4 pots, oh well.. the plants still look fine and all, but why risk it, ya know? That's one of the reasons I put them under HPS, to help evaporate and dry the soil possibly.. I've got the bulb about 15 inches above the plants. The whole interior of the cab is white and is very light reflective. so I'm letting my temps get to about 60/81 and right now they are under 24hr light and in a couple of days they will go to 18/6.
Brilliant!!

Common sense is not so common!!

I am following rebo's thread

My babies are not in soil or under light and they are stretching......

The one that was struggling to pop from the Rockwool finally pop, but her Cotyledon looks discolored (yellowish) poor baby. The other two have stretched considerably more so than I have ever witness in my short experience. I hope the stretch does not stress them.

You should put um under a 26w white cfl. That will stop the stretch.
I veg under 2-4 cfl @ 6500k. You can keep um real low.
Maybe think of this for the future.

I hope ups comes early for ya

First Day in Cab

Potted yesterday using rebo's recipe  and sprayed surface with water and added hydroton. The soil clumped and broke up nicely, so that is a good sign!?

So far, this morning they seem to be OK. Have to go out will check later to see if they need water. Do not want to over water my first time. Probably a few ounces each. Will see.

Cab Temp range 79-81degrees
Relative Humidity range is 58-60%

Hey socbutter I like the setup you got going man. Very well put together.
Thank you.

Unfortunately, I see all the limitations and flaws of the my build.

  • Definitely not steathy
  • a Larger cab to contain the exhaust fan would be better
  • At least two 8"x8" DARKROOM vents
  • a circular vent hole with ducting to run electrical
  • smaller unit harder to dissipate heat
The good thing, is that I now have the knowledge and tools to make my next cab better. A bigger unit is ClosetMaid (item# 12281) storage cabinet, @ $95, from Home Depot. The ClosetMaid (item# 12336) is larger, if you have the space @ about $120, would be a great unit to do everything!:2cents:
