ALOHA everyone. Come along on a very interesting breeding adventure. I am well along on the path already as you join me. This is a fully legal Medical grow that will provide medicine and a chance to do some serious genetic work. The genetic stock I have this year is AMAZING:yoinks: All the expressions of cannabis are present. From 100% Sativa to 100% Indica and hybrids also:joint:
I started this garden in March genetically with clones and seeds. All clones were sourced from verified sources in Humboldt, Mendocino,Lake and Santa Cruz counties in Northern California. Seeds came from all around the world. Thanks guy's I couldn't have done this with out you:joint:
All seedlings were put in towels to crack on April 30 2009. Planted in Coco outdoors May 3 2009. Second crack was June 5 2009. I had an extremely good ratio(100%) of seeds that cracked to crackers that are now seedlings. I am more than pleased let me tell ya:woohoo: Seeds were sourced from verified sources all around the world. Again thank you everyone in the cannabis community for your generosity that is making all this possible, BIG up's to the breeders of these amazing seed lines. Thank you for your time and energy to help futhur the cannabis.
Now on to the genetics in my stable this year:

I am running all these in Botanicare Cocogro 5Kg blocks, some straight, some mixed with Happy Frog. I am using all kind of nutes, brands that is, but am keeping it simple. I am growing almost 100% organically, but that is open to debate. I am using Canna, Botanicare, Technaflora, GH, Roots Organic, H&G and Advanced Nutrients products. Only the best for our Med's. These are for Medical and Spiritual use:joint:
Some plants this year are in buckets and some are in the ground. We get AMAZING weather here in NorCal and the plants just suck it up. The beds we have built are all 100 Sq Ft. and terraced into the hillside. We then used the trusty Roto Tiller to till the beds as deep as we could. We then built walls along the downhill side and filled them with a mix of Coco, soil and compost. We used two kinds of compost Mushroom and well aged compost from a local composting genius. We then mixed this all together and filled the beds.
This is shaping up to be a fruitful year, so tag along and enjoy:joint:

Selecting the Stud Males

Selecting the Stud Males

I have narrowed down my male selection to the following strains:
100% Columbian Sativa- Here is a description by the Breeder.
As for low profile mold resistant strains, I have a landrace Columbian sativa that finishes in about 9-11 weeks and can handle the heavy rains of Vancouver Island in the fall. The buds are fluffy for good airflow with yield still being above average. The plant profile is columnar (cactus like) reaching a mature height of 5-7 ft when started from seed in Feb., planted outdoors in April, harvested mid October. It is productive for a Sativa, but does not have heavy yield like an indica. Bouquet is lemon with fruit overtones, taste is citrus wood, high is 2-3hrs and energetic...seems to warp time:)
Papua New Guinea Gold-This is a Landrace 100% Sativa. Here is what the breeder said:
It doesn't get too tall, stays under 2m. The buds smell like carrot, it is incredibly pleasant. You wouldn't be able to tell its cannabis after its dried if you smelled it without seeing it. The high is very pleasant, gives a very distinct vibe, it hits a very strange and colorful string in your head. Oh I wish I could grow it here. It finishes around the end of October but can go as long as end of November if it's not too wet.""
Master Kush- These are world famous. Here is what Sensi Seeds has to say:
An Indian-Afghani hybrid created from two true-breeding Indica seed lines that were collected in different parts of the Hindu-Kush.
The cannabis from this area has always been valued for its resin production and Master Kush retains this quality, as well as the vintage flavour of her parents earthy and pungent, with a hint of incense.
The taste of Master Kush will remind many smokers of hand-rubbed charas hashish. This is no surprise, as Kush weed is a major source of charas. A plant of great physical power, without the mind-numbing 'stoney' effect of many Indica strains.
Sex - This is a strain from T.H.C. Laboratories. Here is the stats:
Extreme Potency.
Our most powerful strain, Sex gets her potency from a Haze ancestor, which is also expressed in her flavor.

Flowering Time: Indoor 8 weeks
Approx Yield: Medium
Height: Medium
THC = 27.3%
CBD = 1.0%

GREETINGS

GREETINGS

Aloha everyone. Thanks for stopping by. I am busy, very busy as it is really hot and the plants are growing in overdrive. Growing outdoors in coco coir is the way to go. The growth rate I get is utterly amazing, not to mention the insane water holding capacity. I have let male plants get bone dry to stress test and they do not wilt. Other plants in soil are already dead. I will post lots more pics very soon:joint:
Here is a pic of my GF's Blue Dream seedling and me in the garden. Last pic is my Humboldt Big Bud plant, she is gonna be a monster:joint:

Holy $hit Man! Are you hand watering those monsters? If so, how much are you mixing up daily?
Nice pics too!

Hi Everyone, Wanted to say that I am here to help anyone with anything I know anyway I can. I have done closets, rooms greenhouses, backyards and hillsides. If you think I can help just ask:joint:
Yes, I hand water these monsters. Everyday. I also have a drip system set up to help with the watering. I have my drip set up to a 250 gallon tank. A mid size hydro pump on a digital timer runs to the drip line. I mix up at least 50-60 gallons a day to feed the grow.
Yes, I am running all these strains at once. This is a medical grow that I am in charge of. There are multiple patients that's needs are being addressed. That is the reason for all the different strains. This gives me a golden opportunity to gain experience and knowledge of many of today's top strains. I also need different Med's at different times, that calls for diversity.

This is a top to one of my Morningstar's, which are some of my biggest plants this year. They are adopted orphans from another grow. I pulled them out of the trash. They were covered with mites and were underfed and neglected.
Boy am I glad I did that:woohoo: I will post full size shots tom. Aloha:joint:

I don't know how you do it, I have troubles taking care of 10 - 15 plants :yoinks: This will be great just to be able to see all the differences through the plants life cycles in a direct side by side comparison. Also the structure of the Blue Dream looks good!

Selection Qualities

Selection Qualities

Today I was reading a DJ Short article about the "Good" n "Bad" Qualities of Cannabis, here is what he had to say
"A few of the "good" aromas which I have found to be associated with both male and female high quality cannabis are: sweet, floral, fruity, berry, wine/brandy, other savory spirits, skunky and spearmint. Some of the "bad" aromas associated with both male and female cannabis are: grassy, chlorophyll (green), celery, parsley, carrots, cinnamon, pepper-mint or wintergreen, gear-oil and gasoline. Some of the aromas that are considered "good" from females but not necessarily from males are: woody, cedar, pine, citrus, tropical fruit, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, garlic and astringent.
I find this to be fascinating information, not to mention very helpful.
He also says that in selecting a male he uses a selection process that is borrowed from Michael Starks' book, Marijuana Potency, and involves stem structure.
Large, hollow main stems are sought while pith-filled stems are eliminated. Backed by years of observation, I agree that hollow stems do seem to facilitate THC production.
That is really cool because over the years I have noticed the same thing:joint:
Here is a little piece on Male selection from DJ:
I generally employ a simple process of elimination while selecting males. First, any auto-flowering or very early-declared males are eliminated. (Auto-flowering means that male flowers form regardless of light cycle timing.) This is mainly to insure against hermaphroditism or unwanted flowering traits, but also as a means to insure quality. The very early declared males have a tendency to be less desirable in terms of their contributions to the quality of the finished product. (If you are trying to specifically create an early-flowering strain, then your priorities may be different.)

Next, any male plant that grows too tall or too fast is usually eliminated. The reason for this is that most plants which dedicate so much energy to fiber production generally are best for making fiber. The exception to this rule is when an over-productive plant also exhibits a number of the desirable characteristics mentioned later.
Another consideration is the type of floral clusters that develop. Even on males, clusters which are tight, compact and yet very productive are desired over an airy, loose structure. These observations are most notable in the indoor environment. Outdoors, the differences in stem and floral structures are more difficult to discern.

The next and perhaps most important characteristic to examine is that of odor, flavor and trichome development. Again, the females will prove themselves by their finished product, but the males are a bit trickier.

great information jitamon, , i just wonder why all of dj shorts strains, while wonderful, have a very low resistance to pest and diseases, any thoughts?

DJ's been inbreeding within the same lines for many years, and inbreeding depression, happens. Until I got DJ's "personal" Blueberry Clone,I'd never met (grown or smoked) a "Blueberry" that was much worth a damn.
My first BB is still curing,I'll let you know if DJ's "own" clone rates, soon.

Now,Jitamon,regarding your choice of males....
In an open-pollination scenario, like your garden/greenhouse,you should pick a single type of male and use it,solely.
This prevents breeding seeds whose parentage is unknown.
The Mothers you have will provide plenty of genetic diversity,
you're generally making (poly) poly-hybrids,judging from your parent list, and that will leave plenty of phenotypic variations for people to select from.
The only genetics you listed that I'd use (for the male side of things) are Sensi's Master Kush.
Why?
Like I said, above,to keep it simple-but also because the double-indica nature of the MK will tend to "bulletproof" some of the "quirkier" sativa-leaning mother plants. There are other benefits as well.
After reading your lists,I'd guarantee ya' that Sensi's Master Kush will out-cross in a most positive manner with most all of your Mom list.
Keep us posted, this is a fun thread.

Cheers!

Male selection

Male selection

Aloha everyone:joint: Taking a break from the garden to check in. I am pleased that people find this thread and info contained within helpful and fun. I am learning many new things this year that is helping this to be one of the best gardens I have ever done. Thank you to all that have helped me over the years, couldn't have done this without your help.

I wanted to respond to the post by Rez that suggests that I only use the Master Kush male. I was thinking the same thing as you Rez, that is why I planted them specifically. Thanks for the affirmation. I am definatly looking for a stud Master Kush. Are there any specific traits to look for in a male of this strain?
What are the other benefits of using Master Kush, Do tell.
I am also interested in why Indica males are the preferred choice. I have a couple of landrace 100% sativa's that I am going to use for pollen. Am I going down the wrong road? I am willing to do it anyway, just to see the difference:joint:
I have taken clones of selected mothers and all pollination will be very controlled. The males are 2-3 months behind the big mothers and being grown away from the buds in buckets for easy transport. I plan on capturing pollen and hand pollinating whole clones and select branches.:joint:
