*sends strydr a scary winpopup message from the IT Dept.* ;)

*WinPopUp won't work on my Mac
* I am the IT dept.
I also get paid for what I know, not what I do.
Surfing ICMag is the least of my worries, I'm sure others in my Co. are surfing sites way more taboo than ICMag (I work for some freaky people)...

:D

I work for a co. that pimps out IT services to its clients. I am the main on-site for one of those clients. A also am in charge of the office servers, as well as supporting my office staff (bumbling secretaries and 24/7/365 help desk). I have a very close-knit support group (there are about 7 of us) that works like a dysfunctional family most of the time- we get along great when there's stuff to be done, and we know how to cut loose when the time is right.
When I started with this co, they saw my powerbook, and told me they would provide a "nicer" IBM laptop. I laughed at them, and told them "over my dead body" Well, less than a year later, most of my fellow field engineers are using Macs. I've used a Mac since '86, and built my first PC in '85. OS (7-)9 was painful, and the beginnings of OS X was also pretty painful, but 10.5 has never let me down.

Ah cool :)

Yeah I didn't really like mac's before macosx much. Had to support them when they went wrong and google was not my friend back then if we even had google i forget now. I moved to linux after win95 and then bsd which is why I loikes the mac so much :)

I wanted a IBM for consoling shit they used to make a nice tough one. man finding serial ports on laptops is hard these days!

Ya, still need the occasional DB9 port for something or another. I use a Keyspan serial->USB device for all my old-school connections.
I suffered through the bad old days of pre-OSX, and it was not fun. I actually preferred my PC with Win 3.1.1 over the Mac Plus (It was Doom on the PC Vs. Myst on the Mac). I grew up as a mechanic, so tinkering was in my blood- building a PC was crack compared to unboxing my Mac ;)
If I ever decide on a new PC laptop, it'd be a Panasonic Toughbook. My boss uses one- even though it's the COMPLETE opposite of my Mac (sexy Vs. clunky, light Vs. heavy, etc..). I like the IBM stuff, but I want something that can withstand a pounding, when XP fails on me ;)

Always wanted to get into Linux. We use Redhat all over the datacenter, but I haven't had the patients to live with it personally. I've installed/used several flavors (redhat/fedora, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Yellowdog, and slackware), but always found some issue I couldn't resolve, and ended up re-formating to XP. Currently, I have no more PC hardware, only Apple stuff. (OK, one exception to my Linux use- I do have a VMWare ESX box {built on Redhat} that is stable, and will not be re-formated) I'm hoping to buy a new MBP (waiting for WWDC next week) sometime in the next few weeks, so maybe I can load Fedora on my 2.33 MBP
Any suggestions on a flavor of Linux for a noob? Any good support forums you know of?

I'll checkout the keyspan if it works with the kit I work with I will be very happy! Toughbooks are sweet them or the IBM are my fav laptop :) Acer notebooks are nice too of course :)

I reckon you wanna give ubuntu a go really it's the easiest to work with for a noob imo. Comes with a lot of shit to start with and you can cd boot till you get used to it :) Not sure about forums, not been a noob for a while I tend to use the linux documentation project of local docs and google the rest :) you could always pm me of course :)
