My girlfriend is forcing me to run a half marathon in a few months. I would also like to know this as I can only go about 2 miles before giving up.

damn, isnt that 13 miles??? crazy...i cant imagine running for that long.

one of my partners in crime back in the day was a cross country runner, he would always joke that if the cops rolled on us, he would just keep running and be able to out run any cop for miles.

well one night we were mistaken as burglars and the cops swooped down on us, he ran one way i ran the other. he tried outrunning the police while i hid in a parking garage, i remember exiting the garage and my homie was in handcuffs, so much for outrunning the police!

I also have asthma and smoke it up all the time but can out run most people I know and was also in the military (if you're doing this for the military be careful telling them about your asthma). My recommendation to you would be to keep at it! Running is mostly mental, you have to just keep pushing yourself through the burning lungs, the congested/constricted airways, your knees hurting, feeling like you're going to throw up (I've thrown up many times during PT tests in the military and kept on running), etc....

Start off running 1 mile for 2 weeks, if you cant complete the mile, do 3/4. The next 2 weeks, increase the distance by 1/4 mile and continue to do so until you reach your goal... It doesn't have to be these exact distances, but start off small and steadily increase the distance, you will be surprised how fast your body adapts.... I also like to sprint at the end of my runs, I know it takes everything you have but this really helps. As many have said before, just make it a routine and stick to it not matter what! Dont let excuses stop you from reaching your goals, whether it is raining, too cold, whatever it may be!

Good luck and keep at it; if you really want this you will do fine.

I find the bong hits don't affect me.

Build cardio just the same as if you didn't smoke cannabis...

Cigarettes are a different story!

I have started taking Omega FIsh Oil supplements because my friend said they help cardiovascular.

Just wanted to mention: be SERIOUSLY careful with omega fish oil. I have no idea why, but the Omega 3 & 6 fish oil capsules triggered Bipolar disorder in me and sent me on a terrifying manic/depressive rapid cycling episode. The more of those fish oil capsules I took, the worse the manic episodes got, and initially I didn't know the cause. I thought I'd lost my mind. I ran out of the capsules and the Bipolar symptoms dwindled away within about 2 weeks. I bought some more (thinking they were good for the mind) and the rapid cycling started again. I have no explanation for this, and cannot find any information about it online, but I'd hate to see/hear of someone else go through what I did (I seriously doubt it will happen to you, but just in case...). My mother has Bipolar disorder, so maybe the stuff brings out existing but underlying mental conditions in people. Whatever it was, the effect on me was profound and disturbing.

I felt as though Satan was trying to tempt me in asking me this question. And then God was in my head and in my heart saying, "Do not compromise this. You need to stand up for me and you need to share with all these people . . . you need to witness to them and you need to show that you're not willing to compromise.....
what?

could be that you're body/genetics isn't made to handle mega doses of omega fatty acids. I would think the people who would benefit most from it/have genes which can handle it are nothern europeans and native americans. Kind of like me - if I were to eat a motza cracker I would probably burst into flames

Hm very interesting. Yea i noticed that lately i am able to bike/run a little farther, like today i did alot more than i usuaully do even though i was damn near at collapse. but i ate some chicken and started feeling alot better. if i can keep up a good healthy diet regimen combined with excersive everyday im thinking i can get in shape.

I quit cigerettes but i cant quit weed, but today i made my snaps a little smaller and i am not coughing as much when smoking the bong.

how bad is your asthma? i usually need a puff after my first 1/2 mile, i take a puff and walk for a minute with my hands on my head, then i run another 1/2 mile. i always need a puff at night while i am sleeping because for some reason i get wheezy at night, i can still breath good but the noise and tension is irritating so i hit the inhaler. ive had asthma my whole life been stuck with an inhaler.

^yea i got the water covered, but all i ate today was yogurt, i feel kinda sick in my stomach right now. god im fucking pathetic!! the other day i puked after running a mile.

Don't eat anything heavy more than 2 hrs before you go out next time. Fruit or a granola bar is alright. Dairy apparently doesn't sit right with ya so scrap that and save it for after the run. Reason you don't wanna eat anything heavy is that alot of blood will then be routed to the stomach for digestion therefore less in the muscles for efficient work. This can also lead to nausea and vommitting as well.

Of course they won't....That would be like entering a "Stupidest Man Contest" and then voting for one's self

yea definately felt nausea but after i ate some plain cooked chicken and smoked a bowl i felt much better :joint:

i guess puking is just part of the game. ive been reading books about military training and the authors always talk about puking sometimes, aint no big thang.

the last time i puked while running was because i was like 4 shots of rum and a slice of pizza deep, after running a 1/2 mile i threw up but i was able to run the 1/2 mile back to the house with ease

Well, I used to have to do it all.... inhalers, breathing machines, everytime I got sick I got asthmatic bronchitis, multiple ER and hospital visits, the whole 9 yards.... My parents used to try to stop me from playing sports as a kid and I think all that did was hinder me.... I rebelled and started wrestling, swimming (swimming reallllllly sucks for asthmatics since you can't breathe whenever you want), playing football, soccer, anything I could. It really sucked, but I started weening myself off of the inhaler slowly. I would cough my lungs out with all sorts of fluid/mucus coming out during/after exercising but was forced to do this as a prep for the Army. At the time, they didn't allow asthmatics in so I had to deal with it on my own if I wanted to join so I did (and I took a very physically demanding job in the military, as I was recon in the Army).

I played rugby in college and I don't allow my asthma to slow me down or control me (although I'm not saying anything I did was easy). The key to making gains is to not give up or quit, even when you feel like you can't continue.... You said it earlier yourself, you did more then usual even though you felt like you were going to collapse, but felt better afterward. The harder you train, the more you will gain and the more breaks you take the less ground you'll make. Damn I must be high off this Headband hash (which I just finished off :badday:) cause I just made that up on the spot and I'm rambling!

BTW, I would have to agree with the people who mentioned using vaporizors as they are much less harsh on the lungs and we can use any help we can get in that dept! Good job quitting ciggs, if you have the determination to quit that you can do this too! I'm not downplaying your asthma or condition, it is harder for you to do than most but it doesn't mean it can't be done. There are many professional athletes who share our condition but don't let it hamper them.

You're flatly limited in terms of serious cardiovascular goals, ie, shortened marathons and multi mile runs with good times. That's not to say you can't complete them, but the obvious truth is that you're limiting yourself with consistent intake of smoke into your lungs. Alas, you can hack your way through 2 or 3 miles with standard, slow, intelligent progression, adding a minute to your run every other day. You mentioned the Marines-are you trying to become a Marine, or are you just trying to get back in shape? If you are just trying to get in shape, consider the reality that running sucks a bag of dicks. Not fun times. Consider swimming or more enjoyable forms of cardiovascular exercise.

Of more importance to your overall well being is your ability to train with weights, particularly barbells. hit up www.bodybuilding.com and get your learn on.

Good luck.

not trying to join the marines or military at the moment, but it has always been something that i want to do. Mostly i am just set on that physical standard they set, i feel its a good bar to try and achieve and its somewhat achievable. i doubt i could run 8 miles, but god dammit i want to run 3!

good luck dude..

what i do, i lift for 20-25 mins on my lunch at work, then before i go home do cardio/legs.

just starting out probably 2-4 weeks into it, my arms are getting bulked the fuck up, chest is huge, traps are starting to come...and six pack already there just gotta burn some more fat...

and thats the hard part...i do (right now) about 10-15 on a bike, then i run 70-80% of my full speed for 1 lap (1/4th mile)...break for 1 minute, another lap, (break) and anywhere from 1-2 more laps (for a total of .5-1 mile)

i smoke too many blunts and bongs, smoke is horrible for your lungs regardless, so if you really want to build up your cardio, follow this simple plan to a T, and you'll win.

eat right. (none of this eat healthy for a day or a week then back to pizza shit) i mean, chicken, fish, pastas, oatmeal, whole grains, lean meat, vegetables..lift, and supplement with protein daily (whey)....start out by running 70-80% of your full speed for 1 lap, and break, and do one more. then do some sedentary cardio like a bike or elliptical for another 10.

keep doing this for 1-3 weeks, depending on your current health status, then move to doing 3 or 4 laps, and 15 or 20 on the bike. ideally, you want to get in your cardio for ~45 mins, at minimum 3 days a week if not 5 or even 6 (now, maintaining cardio is much easier, but building it is the hard part) and keep going until you're doing 20 on a bike, 20 on an elliptical, and running 1-3 miles-daily.

PS, if you don't have a gym membership...get one... and start vaporizing. this will get you high, but no smoke so it won't fuck with your lungs while you cleanse and build their capacity up
