Watering multiple pop bottles, Dr.Bud method

Don't need to worry about the bottles floating if you fill the rez slowly. Simple.

Also, 1 gal. jugs cut in half can hold 4 bottles "okay"

Could you not make a WATERING BUCKET?

take a bucket that holds enough water\nute mix and rig a slow pump in it. Connect it to your larger basin like the one Dr.B has and let it flood - you would have to do some trial and error to find out exactly how much water your going to need each time. either put the same pump in to your basin and then return pump it out or get two pumps one each way. i think you would save time and you could pre mix the nutes into the bucket and you only have to hook it up when you wanna water. Im sure you could also put it on a timeer like a controller bucket for hydro. that way if you have to leave for a few days it could water and drain your soil for you. you just need a pump that dosent fill really fast. i guess its the same theory as recirculating hydro

look what happens when all you do all day is dream of ways to make stuff automated\easier for your grows. i might need something like this! thanks for making me think! - Sticky

Yes, that's exactly the process that I described above.

"He used the large plastic tub that held all the plants,
pumped his compost tea or nute mix into the tub slowly,
then pumped it back out once the plants had a good soak."

I use a 5 gallon bucket and make a long-brew compost tea.
I personally don't use the water pumps, I'm looking at gravity feed system.
Cheap and simple. I'll post pictures once I get things worked out.

That's exactly what I had described too :)

I've been thinking the same obzen. I'm going gravity feed with an electronic timer option (for when I'm away) I've had a lot of stuff come up in the past week and haven't had time to finish the drawings, but I should tomorrow.

Peace,

I saw these online...

I saw these online...

I saw these online at the Container Store might be a solution. I will probably check it out in person this week - I have to go there to get something else:

Simple Gravity Flow Water System

Simple Gravity Flow Water System

Shit, sorry guys. Forgot to add my update to this thread. I guess that's how projects go, if you don't have a big need for them, you put them on the back burner.

I'm gonna get this system built soon, hopefully within a week or two. I'll post a link for the build once I get to it.

Here's a drawing for the system for all you visual people:

I will add a sprinkler timer to my design and a pump for the drain reservoir to pump the drain water back up to the water reservoir. I expect the total to be around $60-$75. But it will offer complete water automation.

Stay up and stay safe.

Peace,
White

looking great; couple thoughts:

a. for the 20oz bottles, i see them in the stores connected as a 6-pack with a little handle on it - like the webbing on the 6-pack cans - laughed out loud at the store just thinking about soggy growing ;)

b. was loving the idea of a watering tray

and
c. looking at your diagram there i might add a in-line filter like they use for wells to filter from the plant try to the drain res to keep particulate out

anyhow looking sweet!

watering using 2 gallon pail

watering using 2 gallon pail

I have been looking for a solution to this problem too. The closest thing I could find was a 2 gallon pail in Sears. It is 8.25 diameter at the bottom and about 9.33 inches at the top. Here is a picture. It can fit 7 24 oz soda bottles snug. Hope this can help some of you. cheers.

Hey white, I've been thinking about a similar sort of autowatering system, just wanted to throw my 2c in.

I've thought about it alot and I think you could condense the plant tray and the top water resevoir into one unit. Just like a normal ebb and flow. Makes it easier, simpler and more compact.

Weed Smoka OG. Great idea. With the trays I use, it wouldn't work to use the trays as a rez... but I was thinking that I could eliminate the drain rez if I just hooked lines to the trays outlets and hook those lines up to the pump which would pump it back up to the water rez.

Using this method I have 2 problems:
First, as everyone else, here a proper container
second, if I water from the bottom, the pots float and tip over if I pour too much at first go

Also, how come you guys have to water all of your plants at the same time? I never get all of my plants equally thirsty at the same time. It's more like in batches of four plants with 2-3 days intervals.

Hey Vlad,

If you need a container, look behind a pizza chain restaurant for their plastic dough trays, that's what I use.... not saying which chain though ;)

If you water a bit from the top first then you won't have the bottles/containers float to the top.

Are any of you guys keeping your tea/nutes mixed up for days at a time. Or do you remix new stuff everytime? Its all about finding the right size tray, just look around and be creative.

I mix up a few gallons of nute mix at a time and keep it bubbling with an aquarium pump in a 5 gallon bucket. No waste.

what size tube would you recommend for a similar gravity system?

I'd go with 3/4 inch and I'll be running 8 trays with 25-30 plants in each tray in 16 oz cups.

I have been using organics on my grow, but I just got some GH nutes (Micro, Gro, & Flora) and I really like them. I've been using the Lucas formula and did my first feeding a week ago. I think I'll keep using the GH until I run out. No mess, real easy.

But, I have kept my Organic fertz. alive by just bubbling them in a 5 gal bucket same as rastafari and adding molasses every couple of days.
