25+ year old Seed Germinated

Ive been trying to Germinate some really old seeds that have been handed down to me.

Ive placed about 30 at a time in some paper towel in a baggie but none of the seeds have come up until now.

A couple days ago I took some from one of the jars to test. I think its Colombian but iam told it could be Red Bud too.

I placed them in paper towel with some Anti Fungal Rooting Hormone powder and some Hydrogen Peroxide.

I noticed the last few times i tried to do the seeds there was mold on the paper towel even tho I kept it sealed.

But this time after 2 days I saw no mold and I have noticed one of the seeds has germinated. So I put it in some soil right away.

And I took the rest of the seeds from that jar to attempt to germinate more for breeding. I got about 60 or so nice looking seeds that I put all together in the baggie with more root hormone and peroxide.

Pray for these little guys Iam trying to give them all the help for Life I can.

try Moon Gardening for old seeds. It helps them germinate! Good luck

any idea what they were from? I don't know where you live, but if it's US I would guess Mexico, so....
(cross it with an afghani and call it Diesel II and charge $300 a pack for beans)

I was given a few jars that ive been trying to get some of them to germ for awhile now.

Some are Afghani they are big seeds, some are Hawaiian (these were smuggled in Cans), and these which iam told were a Colombian Sativa. I was told that the buds were very heavy seeded and that its prolly a landrace.

So far only this Colombian one has germed, and I have tried the other two strains.

I still have some left of those 2 also, I really was hoping to get the Afghani alive... But they got mold in the baggie and none germed.

I think maybe I should try them again with this antifungal rooting hormone.

The most sure-fire way I've found to germ seeds is this:

Scuff the seams with fine grit sandpaper
Moisten a paper towel (Not dripping, but wetter than damp)
Place seeds on half of paper towel, evenly spaced about 2-3 inches apart
Fold paper towel over itself
Place into ziplock
Put on top of DVR, cable box, computer, etc for about 48 hours.

I probably have a 98% success rate. Granted, I haven't tried any 25 year old seeds, but I have recently germed some that were probably 6 or so years old with a 10/10 success rate.

At any rate, good luck!

Got any pics Xare??

Maybe if it sprouts up, thats when it really gets interesting.

Right now its in buried in a pot of soil very shallow. Iam gonna mist it hoping for a seedling.

Its under my 400 HPS and the room in on the warm side.

I agree with most everything crash-n-burn said, except that I would DEFINITELY soak them in a jar with maybe 3 drops of 3% H2O2 after scuffing, until they sink to the bottom, say 24 hrs or so. Then place in the paper towel.

Ya for the last few days they have been kept warm by my PC, sitting on a shelf just above it. Ive taken the temp in that area and its around the low 80's

And today when I checked on them most looked like nothing but I saw that one had the start of a white root tip showing. So I planted right away.

My last bag of red bud from Colombia is one for the record books. (1976 I believe.)The seedy buds were no bigger than the end of your little finger. Back then I believe an ounce would set you back $30. Two bong rips per session was all it took and lasted for hours. I remember getting extremely BLOODSHOT eyes smoking it. That was a pretty good time to be getting weed from SA. Colombian Gold was a frequent flier through these parts but every once in a while a batch a Red Bud would surface. Those were the good ol' days. I remember ~$300 pounds were the norm then. Almost seems like fantasy today.

Ive gotten old seeds to germinate a number of times. Ive yet to get a plant to grow from them. My experience is that if they come up, they have probelms and dont grow normally or just die. I guess there are always exceptions however.

if your getting mold on your paper towels. try a drop of bleach in a liter of water, soak your towels in that and proceed.......

I soak seeds in warm water for a day then plant in soil...very simple

but if you germinate on tissues, replace the tissues with fresh ones every day or so
