Octo Scrog!!! DWC 1000w hps

L

lorddankinstien

So I decided to stop being dumb and make a real grow log, titled correctly. This is my first grow so any input would be great.:abduct:

Lighting/Venting
1000w HPS w/reflector and 6in flanges, 650cfm fan drawing hot air through the reflector to an outside 6in dryer vent causing negative pressure bringing fresh air in through a 6x12 vent. 24hr lighting for veg. Wall are lined with reflective material for stronger side lighting.

System
50 gallon rubbermaid DWC w/6 8in net pot using slica rock as a grow medium,(supposedly this stuff is good), 2 fusion 700 air pumps feeding 3 12in sand airstones and 1 3ft airdiffusing tube, fish tank heater set to 65, rio 1400 water pump w/bag for circulation, rez temp thermometer.

Nutes
FloraNova grow for veg and mad farmer ph up and down(mostly down:wallbash:)
Also have FN Bloom. I dont plan on using any other nutes really.

Testers
Hanna primo PPM tester blue, and the hanna ph tester red one, both work perfectly and were under 35 bucks each.

Training Method
For this I made the Octo Scrog :yoinks: I did this so I could spin the whole system making training easy, but I found out its way too heavy to turn. Ohh well...

I started this grow with tap water huge mistake, my water is is super hard 547 pmm and 8+ ph I mixed in FNG to 450 ppm not knowing about hard water and after 2 days my clones did look great so I bought the testers and found out my ppm was at 1050 pmm and ph at 7.5, I had signs of nute burn and ph spots. I changed out the rez with RO asap and got the pmm to 489 and ph to 5.76 now my ppm has gone up to 548 and and ph is a daily battle :dueling: of adding ph down. 4 of the 6 clones have roots in the water and are now showing signs of improvent but still yellow leafs and all have grown between 2 1/8in and 4 1/2in. Any advice or input about what I have going on would be awesome. :1help: Heres some pics and tomorrow ill post some roots pics. I plan to add co2 durring flowering.

tons of light :nanana: im hoping for monster sized from to, I figured the biggest nuggs I seen was off a 1000w so I said fuck it and went for it. Hopefully it serves me well and isnt too much light. :joint:

looks good so far. The fan that you have mounted facing down towards the canopy, is that in addition to a fan that's going to blow from the side of the canopy? I'm not sure which is optimal, but I know my sativas didn't like forced air from above. Just a thought.

Good luck!

Nice setup lorddankinstien. Looks like you've got a big scrog ahead of you! Can't wait to see the size of the buds that light will make.

Here's my two cents. With that 1000, you'll have some pretty deep light penetration. I've never scrogged with such a big light, but seems like you could shoot for 20-30 inch colas. Controlling for strain, to get tall colas you have to veg a little longer than growers with smaller lights and less penetration veg their plants.

Of course I could be wrong too. I wonder what more experienced growers think. Anyone got any ideas on that?

Haha I was watching the ultimate fighter when I came up with the idea  thanks ima need the luck I think.

I forgot to charge my camera today so no new pics but I promise to have pics of the roots tomorrow. The sweetest thing happend today I check my PH and it was only 6.06 yay!!! It didnt raise to 6.30+ again so I lowerd to 5.76 so hopefully its starting to get in check. Luckly I have some super master kush (from up north not the junk they pass as mk down here in socal) to smoke on while waiting for this to grow. :joint:

First off thanks for stoping by, ive read all your grows and ima fan of you resoursefullness. :2cents: The room isnt very big and I was worried about the fan being to close the the plants while so small, so I figured I would hang it for now and once they got bigger and stronger I would move so that it blows from the side.

So im trying to understand this a bit more explaine please. Remember im new to this :1help:

hey awesome setup ~!!~ shoutout to the pretty ladies at your pad for sure!

so i've got it solved man - in a micro grow to do spinning things!

1. if scrogging attach to bucket/dwc/table etc

2. put light a tad off center

3. spin plants.

see spinning the lights is really hard... but i bet it would be a friggan CINCH to just make a rotating plate under the dealio - probably 10 ways to get it done easy i'd think! - rotate slow with water tho hehe

well I put wheels on the bottom of the ply wood but its way to heavy, what I need is something that attaches and spins from the middle but strong enough to hold all that weight.

hrm. bicycle tire? how much weight are we talking about?

right. not sure that octo can spin in that area, but we'll assume that you can collapse it to a smaller diameter or so.

oh i've an idea - this might not work exactly for your current setup unfortunately, but maybe... think very short bar stool with top that spins. take the cushioning off, and mount floor on top of it. for heavy load get chair rated to 200+ lbs. lets see if i can find a pic somewhere.....

that's a drummer's stool, but you perhaps get where i'm going with this? then you would just need a motor and a chain/belt driven rotation bit [fit a pully in somewhere?

in any case just consider this a starting point ;)

actually I built the octogon so that it will spin at its widest point there is about .5" on either side... I like the stool idea. Im gonna have to think about that one more... I keep forgetting my camera when I go to check on my plants but I wont today... The new issue is res temp at flooting around 77 now and im worried I need to get a chiller, but I do remember seeing someone post that they run rez temps at 78 all the time with no problems. I think it was Hydro-Soil who had said that.[/B]
Any have experince running high temps or do I need to go get a chiller.

You better get something that seems hot. You should be running some aquashield as well. If you cant get them temps down theres gonna be trouble fast. Try putting that insulation foam bubble stuff on top and around the rez and use the aquashield if you can get your temps down to 72 then you can make it with just the aquashield.

As someone who has lost entire grows from root rot, I'm advising either a chiller; or use a crap load of insulation around the rez and be ready to do the frozen bottle dance once summer hits.

72F is the bare minimum IMHO. I try as hard as I can to keep the rez under 70F. Things to keep handy as a precaution:
aquashield (don't use hydroguard... I tried it and it didn't do a darn thing)
h2o2 (90% if you can find it)
extra air pumps
extra air stones
a bunch of frozen bottles of water

Good luck man. At least you got guys like BigGreen hanging out and giving you tips, that's half the battle right there :rasta:

LOTTA BUBBLES, DO drops in warm water also bubble cool your water, they carry heat out the water as they rise, also the evaporative cooling aspect

try putting your air pump outside your growroom, get longer air tube, it will b louder but coooler

Ever heard of PANDA WRAP? its thick black poly that is 95% reflective white on one side/black on the other either cover your res with it [it reflects light, keeping water cooler then] or i have just left it loose b4, cut "X's" where the plants are so you can stick them through then loosely drape it over your DWC, more of a PITA for res changes, but will help nonetheless

Update with pics :woohoo: temps are way crazy and the a/c that did work pooped out this morning so I found an old a/c on craigslist for 20 bucks im getting tomorrow . Today I went to the hydro shop and got aquashield as advised and a few other small goodies. Ohh and the cool deal is my friend works at central pet (pet supply distributor) and she can get chillers at 47% off

Clone update:
2 of my OG still havent rooted  they are starting to worry me, they have been in the DWC for 14 days and are showing lots of yellowing.Heres a pic.
OG Fire not rooted yet...
