Why Bananas?

I've been wondering why we call unopened male flowers "bananas," or "nanners" for short. I guess they sort of do look like bananas. But for years, when I was a lone, isolated grower, before I started visiting this and other sites, I always thought of them as footballs. Then I discovered that bananas were what I had been calling (in my own head) footballs.

Don't you think footballs is a better nickname than bananas? You have to admit, they look more like footballs than bananas. Don't you? What would you think about making it official and starting a new slang term right here and now? Anybody else with me on this? Do you smell what I'm steppin' in?

They tend to be yellowish, the ones I've seen.

I think they look kinda like a deflated, yellow, punch balloon. Remember those?

We will call em nanners for short.

Because we already have a song to celebrate:
"Yes!We Have No Bananas"

I mean... think about it... "Yes! We have no footballs" is just weird.:moon::laughing:

Sorry, I should have specified American footballs. I keep forgetting that everyone in the world is not American.

Now that I think about it, maybe we should call that pointy ball that Americans play football with a banana. It might help us with foreign relations if we stop confusing our little game with the most popular sport in the world.

I think most of the time when people say "bananas" they are referring to single (not clustered) male flowers appearing well into flowering on a female plant and these small male flowers resemble, well, bananas...

Do these look like (American) footballs or what?

I never let them get past this point, so this is all I ever see.

OK, I'll grant you, this looks more like a bunch of bananas.

How about calling them footballs when closed and bananas when opened?

When a bunch of "nanners" protrude from a female plant, it does indeed look like a tiny bunch of Bananas. The similarity is there, especially if the hermie flower is yellow.
